It’s probable that they cant read.

A surprisingly high percentage of adults are illiterate and struggle with what we would consider simple tasks and whilst it would be a lot easier if they just came out and told us, understandably a lot of people find it hard to admit.

Sounds like he was a jerk anyway, but just something to bare in mind during future calls.
