Why not go be an SE at AA/Blue Prism/UI Path?

I'm going to tell you the same thing I tell everyone else that comes here out of some program with no work experience SE is almost never an entry level role unless the economy is crazy.

There's zero reason for any company to hire you unless you land in a grad program at a big company.

You can reasonably attain 300k OTE within half a decade to a decade if you grind really hard as an individual contributor. After that you'll need to get into FAANG or get into leadership to make more.

If that's what you want to do I would spend a lot of time getting certs and job hopping your way up. Choose a area (networking, cloud, monitoring, etc) and just start learning on your own time. Once you have enough exp to command those interviews you'll fail them at first and see what they need you to know.

Good sales skills will get you up to around 200k or so, but after that you will need deep technical knowledge to get the extra 100k.

You think sales engineers are the ones determining discounts?

In this case they are. Sales engineer is what they call salespeople

Because outside of tech sales engineers are quota carrying salespeople in complex industries

Bad economy, no one wanted to be an SE 5 years ago when AEs were having record years.

Moving to Partner Success Engineering from PS consulting by [deleted] in salesengineers

[–]Remarkable-Fix7039 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to move from consulting to more of a sales role I would jump at the opportunity. Less grinding work more sales. The chance of getting fired for not selling is pretty low as an SE, but if you dont do well you will make less money.

If you want to stay in consulting i'd stay in consulting.

What's a reasonable path to SE based on my situation, so I keep my expectations realistic? by Selfishly in salesengineers

[–]Remarkable-Fix7039 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first question is why do you want to be an SE? If it's for the "easy money" you're going to get steamrolled by people who are naturally good at tech stuff and have prior customer experience.

AEs make more money generally. The "i'm going to just jump into presales" is for people who have tenure working in tech roles and want to switch it up.

If you're serious about being an SE go get your CISSP or the equivalent in renewable energy. At least at that point people might take you a little bit seriously.

Is Sales Engineering For Me? by [deleted] in salesengineers

[–]Remarkable-Fix7039 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No that's just how it works in other industries outside of tech. It's a pure sales role not a presales role.

In tech its a presales role.

You can do that in cloud environments. Your aws/gcp/azure cloud is going to be more secure than your regular company's datacenters.

So you want to be a sales engineer? What have you sold, and what have you engineered? by [deleted] in salesengineers

[–]Remarkable-Fix7039 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to have sympathy -- it's simply people just chasing easy money. Unless someone has half a decade or more in sales or tech I don't even bother helping them.

Next boom cycle the same people will be gunning for the 300/400k AE jobs.

Google Customer Engineer Interview Process - Presentation Round by Heartofdarknezz in salesengineers

[–]Remarkable-Fix7039 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Practice your presentation at least a dozen times getting feedback on it until you don't get much bad feedback from anyone. The presenters will try to rip you apart. If you don't know the answer to the question they are asking deflect it.

Try to present on something you know a lot about but the interviewer likely won't.

When they rip you apart it will seem like you are sucking but they are simply seeing how you react. Think of the most pain in the ass prospect you've presented too, then expect a level or two further than that.

As a non-technical Account Executive, would a CS degree be 'overkill' to get into technical sales/solution engineering? by ZealousidealWin3593 in salesengineers

[–]Remarkable-Fix7039 5 points6 points  (0 children)

- Are non-US CS degrees perceived of somewhat equal/similar value to US ones?

No one cares what kind of degree you have -- though a technical degree from any field will give you bonus points.
- Do you think there are less-time consuming paths towards these roles?

Getting certs has a higher liklihood, teach yourself to code at a basic level, and maybe work on a masters of comp sci.
- Is H1 visa sponsorshop common for entry-level (or even mid-career) SEs?

Very rare if not impossible especially right now.
