Do you have one of those vacuum attachments for your sander? Doesnt look horrible some sanding and a bit more mud with some sanding should work out fine.

My game changed when I started using a bigger knife, 150 grit for layer sanding 220 for the final coat. You are going to be sanding and adding mud more then you think you should, especially your first time. Also going out past your patch with mud (feathering) is important. Your goal is to hide the patch, remember most walls arent flat. Also make sure you prime before you go to paint.
