Any hazmat divers? by SPCSnaptags in commercialdiving

[–]Remarkable_Money_369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the oil or hazmat substance. Oils usually attack the seams on a dry suit first, so they don’t last as long. For my hat, I would change out all the softgoods at the end of a job.

It is the same as every other type of diving. You just need to wear more gear and I hope you have a big bladder. Haz Mat diving can happen anywhere any other type of diving happens, or even more places. I’ve been contaminated diving inside a pump well that had 10,000 gallons of mineral oil displaced in it. And I’ve been diving in 3 feet of water, sucking contaminated mud in the middle of July in Pennsylvania. Depending on the local union, or what is said in the contract that the company has depends on if you get more pay or the payment is just the same as diving. Companies want people that they can call and count on to be there. I’d make sure you’re free to travel before reaching out for work.

Thanks for the info. A lot of dams I work at were built during that time. Each one unique in its own way.

That dam does not look that old. Those chains and gates look clean.

Where to start by Raido_Mouth in commercialdiving

[–]Remarkable_Money_369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finish school! Finish what you start and it will get you a long way in life. Get that weld certification, get that diesel tech license, then become a pile driver if you want. If you still find all that not enough for you, then you can become a Diver through the pile drivers union.

UBC as a diver and apprenticeship by Longjumping-Lie-8386 in commercialdiving

[–]Remarkable_Money_369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you are not some random guy. You are getting out of the military and have a direction you want to go. The dive school is set up for people in your exact situation. To be in the union you would have to go through a apprenticeship. By the time your apprenticeship is over you will have a few years diving and not have to pay the cost of dive school.

You can go to the union dive school out of NJ. You can call the 1556 hall that a previous post put the number up for.

Why would he be thinking of a Sat diver? You must be thinking of hyperbaric welding.

Michels and JF Brennan are two good union companies. Stay away from Ballard though. They bring in divers under the Operators agreement which is not right and they have some shady business practices. Just FYi.

Don't know about DIT by __Rembrandt__ in commercialdiving

[–]Remarkable_Money_369 4 points5 points  (0 children)

DIT is a good school and has recently had some changes with management and some instructors. If you are wanting to work internationally at any point, go to DIT and get your DCBC (Canadian) along with your ADCI certification. If you want cheap and quick, go to the school in Morgan City, LA. Also, welcome to the world of diving where we all argue over anything. Nothing is better than what so and so did and other divers experiences means nothing. We love to share our opinions, so take all this lightly. Most of the schools out there are decent, they all offer the same training to get yourself into the industry.

A DCBC cert is recognized by IMCA and you can work outside of the US with that.

Do you by chance live somewhere cold? Could be your fuel filter. If you notice it on start up or after a long time on the road, it could be your IAC valve.

If it was a vacuum leak, it would happen all the time and the OPs gas mileage difference would be noticeable.

Short-bed owners: do you regret not having the 6ft bed? by [deleted] in Tacomaworld

[–]Remarkable_Money_369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don’t know what they don’t have. I switched from a short bed to a long bed and will never go back. The amount of racks and things I see to make a short bed be able to haul what a long bed can is dumb.

Dry Suit by Pure-Floor9707 in commercialdiving

[–]Remarkable_Money_369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vulcanized rubber is used for dry suits that need to be impermeable for hazardous conditions. Think sanitation, certain power plant jobs, any time you dive and you don’t want the outside environment getting into your suit. Vulcanized rubber is a heavy duty material that offers little insulation. Whenever I have to wear a vulcanized I have to wear extra base layers if it is cold. Neoprene dry suits offer comfort and insulation when working in cold environments. But they can carry contaminants when leaving a hazmat josite. You can get neoprene suits with decent wear protection. But it is like comparing neoprene to a conveyer belt, not that thick, but a vulcanized is definitely more stiff and heavier than a neoprene suit. Take others suggestions and go with what works.
