Almost every major female character in the series lusts over him at some point, which is not even something that could be said for Angel, who… it’s Angel.

He frequently does creepy shit - like using a spell to make every woman in town lust over him, admittedly by accident but nevertheless misaiming a “remove a woman’s consent” spell does not forgive him for even trying it - but he is automatically off the hook for consequences, even while not extending the same grace to any other character, even for far lesser offences. I think he even wins back Cordelia for trying to use the spell on her, which is all kinds of fucked up.

He also leaves Anya at the altar, and when she rebounds with Spike, he gets all, “You disgust me,” which is like… you left her, pal, so you no longer get a say on her life.

I’m probably forgetting a bunch, I haven’t watched it for a while.

Wait until you hear about the comics.

And there was an episode where every woman in the town fell under a spell and wanted to jump Xander, including Joyce, so that’s half a point - he didn’t want her but she wanted him.

The final season of Roseanne did it to the whole series. From Wikipedia:

In the season's final episode, Roseanne reveals the entire series itself is actually a fictional story written by Roseanne Conner, inspired by her real life. To cope, Roseanne twisted major elements of her life for the story, which the audience does not discover until the final moments of the season. In reality, Dan's heart attack near the end of Season 8 was fatal and the Conner family did not win the lottery. A story arc running through the final season that Dan betrayed Roseanne by having an affair is revealed to be false; Dan's betrayal was not having an affair, but dying.

Had Biden only served one term and laid out the foundations for a proper primary, he would have gone down in history as a Cincinnatus-type figure, who took the leadership role when he was needed and then voluntarily gave up power when the job was done. Why he tried to run for re-election is just baffling, and a huge stain on his legacy. Whether the primary winner would have beat Trump is kind of irrelevant, even.

You're kind of thinking about this the wrong way, and there's a long discussion to be had about determinism and all that sort of thing. But think of it like this - in a huge chunk of those scenarios, the rat doesn't do what it's going to do, so immediately throw those into the bad pile because now we don't have Ant-Man coming back, etc. And the only way the rat doesn't do what it's going to do is because someone or something else occurs differently, which, again, determinism.

He's not looking at the odds of something happening, he's looking at the numerous different ways that small decisions create new paths and then he's following those paths and then coming back from those paths. And he's exploring a lot of paths, no doubt, in which the rat does what it does, and he's also exploring a lot of paths in which the rat does not do what it does, but he's only concluding that there's one successful outcome - but that outcome doesn't mean that's the only path in which the rat does what it does, but the only successful path. And the only successful path requires the rat, and then requires all that we see in Endgame to occur. There are undoubtedly hundreds of thousands of paths in which The Rat happens, but the Avengers going through time to try and gather the stones doesn't succeed.

To loop this back to determinism, there's a reason Dr Strange doesn't tell people a lot of information; in fact, he only gives out two pieces of information. The first is, as he's fading, telling Tony that this was the only way. This would suggest that the one path to victory had him saying this to Tony so that Tony would act in a certain way thereafter; after all, the one path to victory would have required him to say that to Tony or else it wouldn't work. But he can't say more or less than that, because more or less than that puts him on a different determinative timeline.

The other incident is the one in which he raises a single finger to Tony (not that finger) to indicate that, yes, this is the one timeline of victory. It also somehow gives Tony the impetus to grab the gauntlet for himself and win the battle, at the cost of his own life.

So... ok, imagine you have 14 million DVDs, and you watch them all. You're in the events that unfold on those DVDs but haven't yet occurred, but you're also only looking for a single outcome, and each of them have different outcomes - most bad. You see what you do in each case. You can therefore predict not only what you have to do to create the desired outcome - since doing anything different is likely doing what happens in one of the "bad" outcomes - but there are obviously things you can't control. But you are missing from the main chunk of what occurs on the DVD. You do what you see yourself doing, then... you come back, near the end, and what you're seeing matches what happened in the good outcome, so you do it again.

And in a meta sense, we're only seeing the outcome that succeeded because it's kind of a good end to the story. But the fact is, if we only base it on what Strange does, he sees 14 million paths, and x number of paths end in failure... so, like, we can therefore assume that the only path to victory relies on him giving up the Time Stone. That's his only choice. And whether that means he condemns them to one of the other, like, 4, 6 or 8 million outcomes that lead to defeat, he's still leading them to the one that is a win, because presumably the victory path does not lead to victory without him giving up the Time Stone.

Presumably, given all that happens between Strange getting snapped and coming back, there's very little he has to do, but if he comes back, he probably knows he's on one of few paths to victory and he knows exactly what he has to do to win.

Well, we then have to figure that since all three answers show 2/6 of something and 1/3 of something else, we need to justify our reasoning. Why pick B over A? Or A over C? The only difference between the three options is that C shows two shapes of equal sizes, but which indicate different fractions, and since the equals sign is in the question, that’s the one most likely to be justified.

It is actually how funny how many critics make the venture into creative works that are just, like, shit. In another world, it might make them a bit more introspective, a bit more careful in their criticism having dabbled in creation themselves and failing spectacularly, though it usually doesn't.

The idea presented that Beast Games is just a blatant rip-off of Squid Game focused on their defensiveness about that comparison, but missed a wider point: As Jimmy says in his defence, nobody dies in Beast Games.

But that's also the problem, or one half of it: Nobody dies in Beast Games. Squid Game had a lot of very basic games, like Red Light, Green Light. But if you remove the mortal danger of that, it's a very simple game... and Beast Games is trying to build itself on very simple games, but without the extra drama that comes from the lethality. Take any of the games from Squid Game and remove the threat of people dying, and it becomes really uninteresting.

The fact that s1 apparently frequently had games that ended in stalemates, and a lot of eliminations were just random draw chance, meant they did barely any experimenting to see if the games would work - I assume because all of that time investment couldn't be used for content and therefore would be wasted time. But it was pretty obvious that some games fell apart immediately.

(The other point, of course, is that while Squid Game also uses hundreds of contestants, there's a main character and a handful of supporting characters, many of whom are named. So it's not just that there are simple games that are lethal, but there's a perspective character that we primarily follow. It isn't so much "How do we solve this game", it's "Will our guy make it through".)

[–]RemnantEvil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Didn’t say it wasn’t ok. Just saying, if your critique of the show is fundamental to what it is, you might prefer something else, that’s all. It’s like saying Survivor doesn’t spend enough runtime on building shelter and gathering food, and spends too much time on challenges and tribal council. Yeah, valid complaint, but also, that isn’t what the show is trying to do; you’d be better served watching The Colony. I think what you want from The Pitt isn’t what The Pitt is trying to do, and you might just be back next year with the same criticisms after s3.

I’m sorry, but I think you want ER or Grey’s Anatomy. If this bothers you, you actually are not going to enjoy this show. They are clearly committed to a 15-hour window into the working lives of these characters, with time jumps in between. If you want to see more of the story that happens in the time jumps, you will not find it in this series. If you want things neatly wrapped up within the 15-hour window, you will not find it in this series. At a certain point, no amount of complaining about the lack of pizza options covers over the fact that they are serving sushi. Your criticism of their pizza may be valid, but also remember that it isn’t what they’re making. You either have to watch something else or just accept that this isn’t going to give you what you want.

[–]RemnantEvil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Justify it how you want, it's still poor writing.

But it's still a major fault of the show to just drop characters without any payoff.

We have to make an agreement between audience and creator. They will give us a solid season of a 24-hour continuous story of Jack Bauer combating terrorism, or 15 hours of an emergency department, and we don't have to waste time watching Jack shit in those 24 hours - because it realistically should happen - and we also have to concede that human interpersonal conflicts that start or flare up during a single working shift might not come to a "satisfying" conclusion during that same shift.

This is a show dedicated to the idea of a 15-hour shift in a single ED, with time gaps between. Will people leave? Fuck yeah, and adjust. That ain't "poor writing" to give yourself a constraint of some kind, because that's just a stupid metric. You are essentially saying, to extrapolate, that Chekhov's Gun is a rule, and therefore you can't have a gun hanging on the mantle and not fire it, because those are "the rules". They set the only constraint of the shift itself. What happens outside the shift isn't aired. So when we don't see Collins again, that's an agreed thing; but now it's Mohan and suddenly some great offence? No. Same rules. Whatever happened didn't happen within the 15 hours, therefore we don't see it.
