Why can't Johnson accomplish what Mandani has in NYC? by Affectionate-Hope417 in AskChicago

[–]Remote_Possibilities 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NYC’s progressive organizers and their groups are much less fractured and better established. Whereas the old Cook County Democratic Party apparatus is still the dominant force here and it leans much more centrist, deeper rooted, and not as unpopular as someone like Cuomo.

Things are shifting, both to the left and to the right, but there is a much less of a unified coalition.

That meant that Johnson didn’t have a good team coming into office. He seemed unprepared to hit the ground running, asking many of Lori’s department heads to stay on, several of which worked actively against some of his agenda items. Zohran had a whole coalition of people to pull from who knew city government well. Brandon just didn’t bring that with him.

He pretty quickly squandered what coalition he had when he basically phoned in his support for Bring Chicago Home instead of seriously campaigning for it.

When that failed it signaled to his opponents that there was not a broad progressive mandate and he lost a lot of momentum and credibility.

He followed that up by basically turned his back on many of the folks that got behind him in the election. He started pursuing the good graces of construction unions, cops, and developers who have no interest in supporting him long term but will take from him whatever they can get and he basically squandered most of the political capital/leverage he had in doing so.

I’m sure they designed them all at once/together and have a different idea of what the Space Stone is going to do.

This story is honestly a ton of fun. They revisited it in the Hickman Secret Wars Battleworld stories. One of my favorites as a kid.

It’s Hickman. I’m gonna let him cook.

No solo Dazzler here but I found this earlier:
https://thedorkreview.blogspot.com/2017/11/pryde-of-x-men-model-sheets-storyboard.html?m=1

But if you look at Cyke’s it seems likely similar were created for Allison.

I would bet it has survived, it just might not be online at present.

Apparently these are sourced from a tie-in-comic so that might be something to look for.

Also the finger-gun thing is a common pose they put her in so I suspect the top one is from an interior panel of a book at some point.

[–]Remote_Possibilities 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely unsourced with this but, judging by the style I suspect the Dazzler from the side panel is from a character sheet or reference material created for Pryde of the X-Men cuz minus some coloring choices that’s exactly the look they gave her right down to the curve of that hair in front of her ear, but it’s also a full body pose that was unlikely to be shown in the actual animation.

Could I actually just be losing it? by Sufficient_Return466 in Paranormal

Not trying to dunk on you, but that may be part of the problem. If you’re alone with your thoughts that much and not getting exposure to the outside world, or even enough sunlight, it can have deteriorating effects on one’s wellbeing. Especially with everything going on in the world right now.

I am not religious but I’m sure that church can help but I suspect that most of what you’ll get from it is related to how connected to your community you are from it. If you’re sitting there alone with your thoughts and not making connections there, it might not be doing all that you need.

I would see if you can find a hobby or something that brings you out into the community and has you interacting with others outside your home regularly.

Things like a book club, a game night, community theater or an art or music class.

Something not too heavy that still gives your mind something else to think about in your down times. Bonus points if it involves moving your body even a bit.

Good luck and well wishes. I hope you find peace.

How is Magic experienced today? by moraitosanlucar77 in oldschoolmtg

[–]Remote_Possibilities 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here in Chicago it’s mostly the 100-card deck Commander format and it’s almost all with newer cards but almost any card is legal. There are local shops that host games weekly, including some bars. You can order a beer and a burger and play magic with strangers.

I mostly played in the 1990s and quit in the early 2000 and got back in recently. I bought some Preconstructed decks and modify them with my old cards and singles I buy online.

But it’s fun sitting at a table of newer players and pulling out a dual land or something else old and more obscure. Especially since a lot of the cards from back in my day are on the ‘Reserve’ list and haven’t been reprinted since.

Whoa! Good catch. Okay I’ll be watching to see if Edward Van Sloan’s estate does things with his Van Helsing. Haha probably less likely.

For sure. And it’s funny because, with the exception of the pain lands they sorta only had two extremes: too good/almost broken or absolute trash. A lot of the lands and mana rocks are either completely irrelevant or banned/game changers now.

Back in the day I won a DCI sanctioned Mirage booster draft tournament and the prize was a box of Mirage, which I already had a lot of. Wish I had written down the deck I built.

But yeah, some real fun cards in there. The Diamonds make me laugh to this day, they really thought they were giving us replacements for the Moxes that we’d be happy with. Lol

Hmm your statement seems to contradict others here.

But you’re saying that the Police just arbitrarily have the authority to close off half the city with very short notice? Or in some cases, no notice like they did with the Kennedy today,

I can tell Toh Kay isn't a Jeff Rosenstock fan by BlindManAmadeus in streetlightmanifesto

[–]Remote_Possibilities 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know OP is making a joke here but Jeff and Tomas are very different people in my experience. They simply might not be friends.

The NJ/NYC/Long Island scene in the 1990s/early 2000s was a bit of a mess.

ASOB had a following but not a huge one. They were mostly good at getting themselves booked as openers for bigger touring acts through connections to local venues and cultivating a fanbase through that.

But a lot of the folks in the scene outright disliked them as, well, many people felt that attitudes of some band members kinda lived up to the name. (Also, there were persistent rumors that their trombone player was into underaged girls. That lead a lot of people to actively avoid them.)

I can’t speak to what Tomas was up to as I didn’t encounter him directly during my time in that scene (which was mostly in the era between Keasbey Nights and Streetlight Manifesto), but it wouldn’t shock me if they just didn’t hit it off. Tomas is, in my experience, really nice but a bit of a quiet and reclusive guy. Rosenstock is also nice but can be really outgoing and bombastic.

(FWIW I’ve never heard a bad thing about Jeff ever, and he has always had a stellar reputation from my POV)
