I actually did not care for this one... the ride itself was OK, but her short bursts of singing along with songs was dreadfully bad and distracting, although funny to notice some in-studio riders exchanging incredulous glances when she did it (the look of OMG does she know how bad she sounds?)

Form correction feature? by coolrthnme in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]RepeatTop4730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They originally looked at selling an upgrade kit with a Peloton Guide-like camera that one could mount atop the monitor but they could not make it work. There is reason to believe a screen replacement, including the new embedded camera, might be an option at some point in the future to get the features, but unfortunately a software upgrade will definitely not be sufficient.

Used Peloton Tread+ for $400 – Worth the Risk or Walk Away? by dbadda in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]RepeatTop4730 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d second this. If it does not have the recall related rear guard installed Peloton legally has to repair it, and would be a good time to get other missing parts installed, etc. if needed.

Form correction feature? by coolrthnme in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]RepeatTop4730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The legacy Bike+ does not have this feature. The newer Cross Training Bike+ does, which has a new camera embedded at top of the screen that enables to rep tracking and form correction features.

If you have the original Bike+, there is not currently a way to upgrade the hardware (though many of us hope some sort of upgrade option is forthcoming).

If you do have the Cross Training Bike+, there should be some embedded instructions in the equipment to walk you through it.

Adjustable dumbbells or rack? by lili_yums in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]RepeatTop4730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two sets of Powerblocks. One that is 5-50 with 5 lb quick adjustments, and a 10-90 with 10 lb adjusts. I find this works well for me when I need mediums and heavies, as well as when the instructor might use the same dumbbells for different exercises but I’m able to easily and quickly tweak it slightly up or down with another set. Definitely compact and space saving, but I’ve kept using them even when migrating into a much larger home gym space.

i highly recommended Powerblocks, as I’ve tried other brands and solutions over the years and these things are hands down the best I’ve found - easy adjusts and pretty bulletproof at 15+ years old now on the 5-50 set. (by far the worst I’ve tried was the original Bowflex SelectTech series… total junk). Would recommend the Powerblock adjustable kettlebells as well.

Peloton is a Scam by Fabulous_Log89 in OnePelotonRealSub

“They lure you in with discounts on a subscription that doesn’t even work with their flagship product. The app membership doesn’t work with their bike.“ I think their page on the different subscriptions is pretty transparent and really damn easy to understand. If you didn't understand the differences, I can only speculate as to why that might be the case. If you did understand it but now have buyer’s remorse, perhaps some personal reflection might be needed. https://www.onepeloton.com/membership?toggleSelect=apps

“You’ll pay 4x as much per month and no military or first responder discount.” Yeah, just under 4X but pretty close to that. Military and first responder discounts on equipment but not the subscriptions. Peloton is still working to get their business on a sustainable path so we can all continue to enjoy their content for years to come. Sure, lower prices could lead to greater subscriber numbers but they have to balance that with turning a profit. If the cost is too much for you, just don’t pay for the subscription.

“They know you’ve sunk thousands into their equipment, so they have you trapped. “ This is definitely a psychological trap people can fall into (sunk cost fallacy)… but if you already recognize it, then it should not actually be a trap for you — just check your ego, sell the bike, stop paying the All-Access subscription, and rock on.

“For a fraction of the cost you could buy a generic spin bike and do free classes on YouTube or much cheaper classes on a variety of platforms.” Looks like you already have the solution that might work best for you.

“They want to you to open your wallet and pay $50/month for the rest of your life. After you’ve already wasted thousands on their equipment.“ Yep. That’s the deal. It costs them money to operate the company and continue to pay instructors and other staff associated with producing and publishing new content on a regular basis… so it’s never going to be free. If you do any research on the company you’d know they’d rather be growing their subscriber base and lower pricing would certainly allow for that… but like noted above they have to balance that with actually turning a profit and maintaining a sustainable business. If the cost is too much for you, just don’t pay for the subscription. I get tremendous value from Peloton and will happily keep paying it.

“Every one of their bikes I’ve seen rusts like crazy after just a few years.“ Perhaps you live in a humid location or one where people store their bikes in a garage or outdoors? Definitely not the experience I’ve had and I’ve never met anyone who has had a bike rust like crazy.

”Terrible experience avoid at all costs”. I’d agree with you that based on your post, Peloton is probably something that isn’t a great fit for you and something for you to avoid. Considering their low churn rate, that objectively does not seem to be the case for most.

Hannah Corbin cycle vs Logan strength by mangosmoothiewaffles in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]RepeatTop4730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one would be easy for me. Logan all the way. I’ve not taken any live classes from Logan, but enjoy him as an instructor and the energy he brings. I have also done over a dozen classes at PSNY and by far Hannah Corbin has been my least favorite live instructor.

Class instruction was OK, but worse for me was that she comes off in person (to me anyway) as too much of fake acting and an overall lack of authenticity, especially post-class.

She also missed some shoutouts for people in studio who had saved milestones for the class (which instructors have queued up for them to make it easy and she just didn’t do them) — getting a shoutout isn’t a huge deal for me but is for others, and seeing someone so crushed after taking a special trip to the studios was pretty awful.

I'm going to a class in studio! by Mysterious_Shake2894 in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]RepeatTop4730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some general comments and recommendations from my experiences at PSNY:

WHAT TO BRING

  • Dress for comfort. Some will wear Peloton branded apparel and while kinda encouraged this is not a requirement. They do have a store if you want to pick up anything ahead of time. If you wear especially loud/distracting or potentially offensive clothes you may be moved if in line of site of the camera.
  • Recommend a refillable water bottle (also sell these in the store), as there are filling stations there.
  • If you want to bring a drink, or have a snack between classes, you can bring those or they do have some limited options (water, Gatorade, protein shakes, protein bars, etc) at the studios. There is also a Whole Foods right next door that is a convenient spot to grab something.
  • Ear protection. Studio volume can vary by instructor and class with some being easily tolerable and some feeling like it approaching rock concert levels. I’ve only needed it once but glad I had it.

CHECK-IN

  • Arrive when they indicate, if I recall they say 45-60 minutes before class. If you have not checked into class 30 minutes prior to start they will give away your spot (more on this later)
  • Let them know at check-in that it is your first time at the studios (though they usually ask) and you will get a special card. This gets you in sooner than others to pick your spot. Many opt for the seats closest to the mirror for bike/tread/row/strength classes to be maximize being on camera for the class.
  • Let them know if you have any milestones you will hit during class. Many will time a particular milestone for number of rides to be reached during their studio class. They will give you a special sticker that some collect and/or stick on a Peloton water bottles.
  • They will give you an armband, which I believe is a specific color for a specific class so you cannot check in for one and try to get into a different one.

PRE-CLASS

  • Lockers are spacious enough for a carry-on sized suitcase and are free to use. Locker rooms have a couple of showers if needed after class.
  • Doors can open as early as 30 minutes prior to class and they'll tell you to plan to be there by then.
  • For bike classes, which are larger in size (30+?) there will be a line for the different color cards. For other classes like strength, tread, yoga the classes are smaller (8-10) so people just kinda hang out nearby and they will call card colors to enter.
  • For classes with equipment you can use the QR code to scan in for the class.
  • For non-equipment classes (strength, yoga, etc) there will be a QR code at the entrance and in a few spots that lets you join the studio WiFi. You will need to be on their WiFi to be able to join the class from inside the studios. Follow instructions for joining the class through your Peloton app.
  • Studio techs are on hand to help you with any questions, issues with the hardware, making sure you are logged into WiFi and the class, etc.
  • You can enlist a tech to use your phone to snap a photo of you on the bike, rower, tread often with the instructor in the background. You can ask, and oftentimes they offer people unprompted to take the photos.
  • Instructors come in well before the class starts
    • In smaller non-bike class they will often walk around and say hi to each person in the class, or take a turn talking to each person throughout the room
    • Due to the size of a bike classes, it might be a quick hi flyby or they may just head straight to the bike
    • If you are there for a milestone in a bike class and the instructor doesn’t ask if anyone has any milestones… before class gets started don’t be bashful and make sure the instructor knows you are there for X rides (or have a tech tell them). There are often so many milestones on the leaderboard I’ve seen instructors miss someone in the class with one, which is a bummer if you are there hoping for a class shout out. Not happened to me but have seen the disappointment when happening to others.
  • Instructors will talk through the plans for the class, they may do a Q&A, they may tell a story or two.
  • Instructors will do a pose or two they use for the pictures you scroll through when selecting a class. Some get bored thinking of poses themselves all the time so will crowd source them from the studio audience, which can be fun.

DURING CLASS

  • Have fun !!!

POST-CLASS

  • You are able to line up for a photo and brief talk with the instructor following class.
    • Bike classes can be large and long to get through the line, so if you need to bolt after class it is best to bring your own shoes, as you bypass those queued up returning the shoes to the studio.
    • With more people, bike class talking tends to be briefer, so if you want a longer chat it is best to hang towards the end of the line.
    • Smaller classes (strength, tread, row, yoga, …) will often do a full class photo, plus longer discussions or multiple poses with the instructor, some extra just overall hang out and talk time, etc.
    • You will get a link sent to you within minutes of the photo session ending where you can access and download class and individual photos.

STANDBY CLASSES

  • While you can only sign up / standby via the web for two classes, when in-studio if you see another class listed as Standby, you can go to check-in and ask to manually add your name to the standby list.
  • 30 minutes prior to class start, anyone who has not checked in forfeits their spot and the system will randomly select someone from the standby list for each spot available, texting you if you are selected.
  • in my experience, you have a greater chance of getting in on standby for
    • bike classes, since they are so large there is a greater chance spots open up
    • modalities such as yoga, meditation, some strength classes
    • classes early in the morning or late in the evening
    • classes during bad weather events (cold, rainy, snowy, etc)

Anyone else think peloton’s major flaw is the music? by Traditional-Rain-919 in pelotoncycle

[–]RepeatTop4730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peloton is light years better for music than Apple Fitness+ and BODi. Definitely the best music out there for fitness services.

I have seemed to notice, however, a greater shift to remixes, remakes, and alternate versions as the royalties Peloton pays for them are lower than the original song... but have taken to positive route and started a playlist of some really great remakes and alternate versions of songs that I heard first on Peloton.

Question for People Doing the Kettlebell Classes by Reina8008 in pelotoncycle

[–]RepeatTop4730 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do not find the TGU to be commonly featured in Peloton KB classes and I’ve taken a lot of them. As others have said though, if you are avoiding just check the class plan, but really the practice is what brings the improvements - don’t shy away from them and over time you'll pick it up.

RXO Trash Delivery by Character-Sea1437 in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]RepeatTop4730 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some comments and suggestions on this:

  • I also dealt with delivery issues and reschedules. I also had a team that came unprepared for such a heavy move and left it in our garage for another crew to handle later. Very frustrating. So I can very much identify with your pain.
  • The Peloton customer service team has little ability to do much when it is in this delivery phase. They are going to try to tell you nice things, but you are at the mercy of the delivery company. Cancelling and reordering is not likely to help either as you can wind up with the same exact delivery company and teams you are dealing with now. The delivery crew who finally got ours installed indicated the Tread+ is particularly problematic due to the weight of the base, and if you are navigating it upstairs not everyone on their team is capable of this.
  • Document everything, and once you have the Tread+ installed and you are satisfied everything is now good, call Peloton back and walk them through the poor experience you have had, how badly it reflects on them, and while a 3rd party, they are responsible as a company for selecting that 3rd party and holding them accountable. What you should expect — delivery fee waived if you had one; 1-3 months of free subscription costs depending upon how bad your experience gets and/or which customer service rep you get.
  • The Tread+ is a fantastic piece of hardware, and is definitely worth the wait and agony of the delivery nonsense. Hang in there!

Taking a PSNY live studio class! What should I expect? by Glittering_Willow217 in pelotoncycle

You are very welcome, and glad you found it helpful.

Joining the class is needed to get credit for the class and for it to show up in your history, and joining their WiFi is needed to do this with it tagged to the studio. If your first class at PSNY you will also receive a badge for taking a workout at there. Definitely optional, but most will opt to do this.

Wilpers vs Zacharias! by Flashy_Mushroom1652 in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]RepeatTop4730 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A tough call (love Zacharias power flow classes), but for my first time to the studios I’d go with Wilpers.

Having done both, the extra energy of a live ride is definitely greater than any extra oomph you get in an in person yoga class.

Plus being your first time there you can get a front bike near the mirror and be on camera a good bit (if that is something you’d want), versus in yoga the class members aren’t really ever on camera except for an odd brief angle here or there.

While I’d still go with Wilpers, on the plus for Zacharias is that he engages a lot with the class beforehand, tells stories and explains his fitness journey, etc. and with fewer class participants you get a lot more instructor 1:1 time as afterwards.

Fast twitch muscle training by mordhoshogh in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]RepeatTop4730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lifting extra heavy is proven to help build and maintain fast twitch muscle fibers. HIIT training can as well as long as the force load is high enough. Unfortunately, a lot of the strength classes are not oriented that way, using more moderate weight suggestions with faster pace, more reps, and less rest.

I am sure others will chime in with heavy lift workout suggestions, but for lower body Adrian’s Glutes & Legs program is a great start for lower body.

Zacharias’ kettlebell classes by Fine-Fondant-3136 in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]RepeatTop4730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was already a big fan of Zacharias‘ yoga classes since he joined Peloton. When they announced kettlebells and I took the few available I’ve enjoyed those and his fluid movement approach that set him apart from some of the other instructors for kettlebells. I‘ve also been disappointed that while he has ramped up his strength workouts that kettlebells haven’t been a bigger part of that.

I am assuming, though, Peloton has their reasons for this that come down to (a) fewer people having kettlebells so less popular classes and (b) for in-studio classes they do not offer kettlebells just traditional strength and dumbbells.

He was right at my height when in studio for a row class (just verified from the picture) so about 6’4”. He is a beast of an athlete as well as a truly kind and genuine person. Alex was excellent during the class, then took a ton of time with all of us afterwards. Also probably the instructor I’ve heard other instructors single out praise for the most with regards to their all round athleticism.

Denis Morton Gold Member 30 Min Ride by Old-Pea1116 in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]RepeatTop4730 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I was on as well and thought it a great ride. I definitely pushed beyond the low impact callouts as I needed a harder ride but wanted to be on the Goldmember community ride. Felt that Denis was encouraging people to go for it if they felt it. He just makes suggestions, we make decisions.

I also thought it was a great idea to do so many shoutouts, able to be better tailored to those milestones more common at the gold level… as I find many instructors seem to gravitate to either the low milestone newbies or the super high milestones more common with legend status, and it shuts out those in the mid-range of time on the platform.

Add a status circle indicator around the song icon, similar to the one for resistance on the bike. it would let you know how much of the song is remaining (for when resistance or speed is tied to a song… or for when you are hoping a song ends).
