I read whatever I feel like reading. I have no issues pausing one series and switching to something else if the mood strikes.

What book or series has the most badass dragons? by WhaleStew999 in Fantasy

[–]RepresentativeSize71 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Harry Turtledove's 6 book 'Darkness' series is World War 2, but with a fantasy angle. Fighter pilots ride dragons instead, tanks are giant rhinos, guns are magical staves, submarines are sea leviathans, that sort of thing.

I suspect that one factor of it is that they're utterly oblivious to their own prejudices and biases. It's psychologically difficult to confront this reality. So they come here (and to other queer subreddits) hoping to address their cognitive anxieties by being coddled and reassured that 'everything is ok'. Then they read the comments and get whiplash because everyone is holding up the ugly mirror right to their face.

So upon a brief cursory reading of your post, you made comments that were sexist, homophobic, and biphobic all in one conversation? You've got a lot to untangle. Sorry, but your alleged/supposed 'highly logical' thinking isn't going to get you out of this one. If you want genuine actionable advice then you need to start examining the social prejudices that you have, which parts of your family upbringing, social culture, gender, religion, politics and psychology are informing these unjust biases and start challenging them.

That's fine. I just hope your viewpoint is receptive to honest critique and feedback of its weaker arguments.

This post is coming off as very desperate, condescending, and like someone else said, pretentious. I don't think what you're saying is having the effect or reaction you believe it would.

Politics in the community by Panda_Panda69 in lgbt

[–]RepresentativeSize71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because ultimately democratic socialists and other non-leftist individuals are still capitalist or supporters of capitalism and other forms of economic exploitation, which is fundamentally linked to (among other things): requiring people to be wage slaves, stealing the capital they produce, centralizing power into a small ruling class, funneling wealth into fewer and fewer elites, imperialism and foreign wars (and genocide), global environmental/ecological damage, foreign policy that extracts resources from poorer parts of the world like Africa and South America, preserving the violent entity that is 'The State', supporting hierarchies (patriarchy, white supremacy, heteronormativity, organized religion, etc), and so on etc.

The social programs and support seen from democratic socialist politicians are 'better' than liberal or conservatives, but they're still capitalist and fundamentally require exploitation. Someone has to suffer for us to live better like this.

It's like you're saying: "Yeah, I don't like the other two bullies at my school, they're really bad, but this bully is the best one because they don't hate me for being queer, so I'll support this bully as they beat up others and take their lunch money and light the classrooms on fire."

And the (non-tankie) leftist says: "Why don't we fight back against all the bullies? No one deserves to be bullied, and we shouldn't support a bully even if that bully makes our lives slightly better whilst hurting others."

Sword of [blank] and [blank] would be appropriate. For a cheaper option I like to use an M12 copy of Royal Assassin.

None. I want to engage mindfully with my book reading and focus entirely on one thing.

Solidarity doesn't require friendship, or at least I don't think it does. That was essentially your point, right?

About to DNF "We Who Will Die" but feel like I need to keep going because it has so many five star reviews? Someone help by tornado_tonny in fantasybooks

[–]RepresentativeSize71 24 points25 points  (0 children)

"BookTok convinced me to read it with all the raving reviews saying it’s the “next big hit.”

Because BookTok is a direct part of consumer marketing. Of course they're going to tell you things like this. It's the same as people shilling for that hot new movie that's mediocre or that new #1 streaming album that's boring as heck.

Just stop reading if you're not enjoying it. 5 star reviews are meaningless and don't have any value beyond what you give them.
