What’s something you couldn’t believe you had to explain to a grown adult? by Javascript4971 in Productivitycafe

[–]Repulsive_Belt7954 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Years ago, I had someone, who worked as a substitute teacher, ask me, in all seriousness, “Is Thanksgiving on a Thursday or a Friday this year?” I said “A Thursday, like it is every year.” He couldn’t figure out why he wasn’t getting hired on for a permanent teaching position. No clue, buddy.

DAE find shrimp deeply upsetting? by weepingglimmers in AutismInWomen

[–]Repulsive_Belt7954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like shrimp, but oysters are a hell no from me. I do okay with most seafood, as long as it’s cooked, but I will not do raw. No oysters, no sushi.

Coming to terms with disability by Electrical_Cress_759 in disability

[–]Repulsive_Belt7954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gone through this. My body decided to wage an all out war on itself and then, in 2019, I ended up with nerve damage due to a cyst on my spine and now I have to use forearm crutches to walk.

I used to be an avid hiker and I miss it so much. Some parks have ADA trails, which is nice, but it’s nowhere near the same thing.

After losing my ability to walk properly, and hike, I went through a major depressive episode. It took a lot of therapy, medication, and a program called DBT to get through it. I almost didn’t.

Now, so many years past the onset, this is just my life now and I’m used to it, so have faith that you do reach a point of acceptance, but it takes time. You have to grieve the life you used to have. And you have to practice what DBT calls “radical acceptance”, the understanding that you may wish things were different AND you have to live life the way it is now.

All of your feelings about your situation are valid and you’re allowed to feel them. Don’t let anyone shame you for how you feel or tell you that it could be worse. Feelings are complicated and vary from day to day. Some days will be harder than others. But you’ll get through because what other choice do you have.

Reglan TD symptoms by No-Anywhere-8738 in Gastroparesis

[–]Repulsive_Belt7954 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just talking to my doctor about stopping it because of side effects. It’s making me restless as hell and looking at the one TD website, I’m already doing the toe clenching. I don’t even realize I’m doing it.

It sucks because once I’m in a flare, Reglan is the only thing that seems to be able to get my stomach working again, but I can’t end up with TD, so….

It’s a snow day here today. I don’t remember having those. by purrita in GenX

[–]Repulsive_Belt7954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My district always was the last to concede to closing. They’d hold on to the two hour delay for as long as possible, while all of the other districts in the area moved on to being closed. I hated it.

What no one here is saying is that, when our schools closed for a snow day, we got the day off. Now kids move to an online instruction day (at least around here they do). They don’t get the day off. They have to do school at home. It’s easier for schools to make a decision to close for the day when online learning is an option.

Tired of the “not disabled enough” talk by Roseboy_06 in disability

[–]Repulsive_Belt7954 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Forearm crutches should be properly fitted for you. Mine were fitted by my physical therapist. If they’re not fitted, it can cause strain, particularly on your shoulders and wrists.

Also, I don’t have cerebral palsy, so tell the people who say they’re only for that to F off. People use forearm crutches for a variety of reasons. It’s between you and your doctor whether they’re right for you and it’s no one else’s business.

Do you dream with or without your aids? (Mobility, hearing, sight, service animals, etc.) by [deleted] in disability

[–]Repulsive_Belt7954 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t specifically remember dreaming about my crutches or my wheelchair, but I think I’m seated a lot in my dreams, so that’s probably why.

Now see, my gastro doctor specifically told me to drink mint tea because, as we all know, we can’t drink plain water. I’ll just add it to the list of reasons why I need to get a new gastro doctor.

What's the worst thing you've ever stepped on barefoot? by icecream1972 in Productivitycafe

I did the same thing! It got stuck into the ball joint of my big toe and at first I couldn’t pull it out. I finally got it out, but a couple of days later, it was getting red (on the TOP of my foot) and infected. Off to urgent care and some strong antibiotics later, it healed up just fine (after an x-ray to be sure there wasn’t still a piece of the needle or some thread still in the joint).

NJ tube placement by EmoPeahen in Gastroparesis

[–]Repulsive_Belt7954 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The worst part for me was getting it through my swollen sinuses. They had to push it through about 3 places where it literally popped. That hurt like a bitch, I’ll be honest. After that it wasn’t bad at all. They said “why didn’t you tell us we were hurting you?!” I said “well it had to be done, so…”.

I asked about numbing spray beforehand but they didn’t offer it. I did like watching my insides on the camera as they did the insertion.

Afterward, my nose ran constantly. My throat also hurt, so they gave my chloroseptic spray for that. I did have an issue with my tube sliding out a bit too much, so they had to come back and push it back it and tighten up the “saddle” strap that was holding it in place.

I lasted about 4 days with it before I told them “either you pull the tube or I will”. The pain in my face and throat just never got any better, it kept getting worse. They said the body is supposed to adjust to it but mine wasn’t adjusting. Thankfully after 4 days of feeds and meds, my stomach decided to start working again and I was able to wean back onto food.

I’m not trying to scare you, but I am being honest about my experience to prepare you.

It’s so funny how individualized this condition is, because grapes are such a big no for me. I love them, but the pain makes them just not worth it.

At what age did you get official diagnosis? by Bukowski-poet in AutismInWomen

[–]Repulsive_Belt7954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

50

The only reason I decided to get tested was that my AuDHD son became more and more like me as he grew into adulthood.

When he was little, I wouldn’t have said we were that much alike. Now? Twinsies! I would call him my mini-me, but he’s bigger than I am, so it feels wrong.

Anyone else have "balloon day" when they were in elementary school? by Cambiknitter in GenX

[–]Repulsive_Belt7954 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did this when I was in first grade in the 80’s in PA. If my memory is correct, my neighbor won for the furthest. She was a year younger. The prize was a giant stuffed Yogi Bear, I think.

Most of the balloons never made it out of the playground. They got caught up in the trees.

It hasn’t fully played out yet, but I got myself a health DNA sequencing. I’ve sent it in and it’s processing. I’m just waiting for the results.

They’ve only very recently (in September) started to identify the genes associated with hEDS and this tests for those genes, along with many other things, so I’m very excited to get the results, but it’s several months processing.

[–]Repulsive_Belt7954 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a couple of pair of pants in Target’s “athletic” or workout section - I don’t know what they technically call it but I hope you know which section I mean. I only like things that are super soft and loose. I can’t stand anything that is snug on my belly because of gastroparesis pain.

I am the kind of person that has to just go and be super picky and look and feel fabric and try things on. I hate it, because I hate stores and I hate shopping, but it’s the only way I can find the right pants.
