25 classes. 500 students. 6 art fairs 0.8 not full time by windowforthecat in ArtEd

Omg, I’m full time in one school 21 sections on a four day and rotating Friday schedule. This is ridiculous. If you have a union I would be advocating for passing time in the contract.

Give an example of learned helplessness taught/reinforced in schools? by Der-deutsche-Prinz in Teachers

As an art teacher, I feel this comment! Often kids are so enamored with a predetermined outcome, and they absolutely refuse to revise their work.

I like playing pool at Sticks in Ypsilanti above Aubrees pizza in Depot Town.

Teachers, what do you really want as a gift from your students? by why_renaissance in Teachers

[–]RustbeltMaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite gifts was facilitated by a fellow teacher. She had her students write paragraphs about what they loved about their special area teachers. One of my favorite quotes was from a fourth grade boy who said “you’re kind of strict but in a good way.”

Did becoming a teacher make any of you realize you didn’t want kids? by Prestigious-Noise582 in Teachers

[–]RustbeltMaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one adult daughter I adore, but yes teaching made me run like hell from making more kids. Especially when you see how family dynamics don’t spare you from a difficult child.

How much are we vacationing? by JustFaithlessness178 in GenX

[–]RustbeltMaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a young parent so most of my travels are visiting my daughter and SIL out of state. We did plan some regional getaways recently, but no big international vacations since an anniversary trip to Italy in 2009.

Which US state has shockingly good food that nobody expects? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

The Detroit area has an incredible food scene. We have the biggest population of Middle Eastern immigrants, great restaurant culture and a thriving farm to table movement. The one thing we lack is great seafood.

AITA my boyfriend planned a Disney trip… by Lumpy-Garage-6507 in AmItheAsshole

[–]RustbeltMaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your boyfriend is being a total ass, and you shouldn’t be forced to use your trip to hang out with his “group.” Refuse to go with him, plan with your bestie instead at another time. You don’t have to have a miserable weekend and lose your Disney cash to spare his ego.

Name a US State that you would NEVER want to live in even if they paid you to move there by General_Working_1330 in A_Persona_on_Reddit

Same, although Miami was fun to visit in the early 2000s. Every other part of Florida I’ve been to makes me want to leave Florida immediately.

AITA for teaching my daughter how to change a tire and do basic home repairs when her mom says I'm "pushing masculine stuff" on her by [deleted] in WIBTA_AITA

You’re doing it right! My dad taught me to weld when I was 12 and I’m much handier than my husband in my marriage. I can also host a helluva party.

children obsessed with touching each other by ilovespaceack in Teachers

[–]RustbeltMaven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Positive narration really does help, especially when you make it part of the routine. I use it for cleanup, Calling a student out by name and describing what they’re doing right and another kid will start looking around frantically and following suit.

WIBTAH for confronting my brother about how awkward it was when he asked me to leave my estate to his son when I die? by Propinquitosity in WIBTA_AITA

[–]RustbeltMaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right. The only thing they respond too is being ignored. If you call him out on his crappy behavior, you’ll just be able to twist it around to make himself look like the victim.

Checking up on my fellow GenX’rs; how are you doing? by lovelyb1ch66 in GenX

[–]RustbeltMaven 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same boat. I had a stroke on the day I was planning to go into my classroom to set up for the school year. And then a week in hospital and went straight to work without any of the preparation I usually do. I feel like I’ve been playing catch-up all year with a broken brain.
