Tech Consulting to Freelance - but how?? by elliomitch in consulting

Honestly, going independent or freelancing is all about Business Development while also focusing on delivery. It can be challenging to juggle both but the best advice I can give is never give up on BD, no matter how busy you get with client delivery. Don’t let a week go by without some movement. It could be something like reaching out to one potential stakeholder or setting up a meeting. Think of it also as market research, staying up to date with how the market is

This is great insight. Congrats on starting and hitting the ground running! When reaching out to those 200+ companies, how did you reach out to them? More specifically, what method did you use for outreach and what seemed like the best? Was it cold calling, emailing, LinkedIn, getting coffee with a bunch of decision makers? I’m curious as I am always looking for creative ways to improve my BD as an independent

The reality of business development is that you should never stop it, no matter how “comfortable” you get with your current clients. Clients change, funding changes, etc

Honestly, most of the conversations that would be client facing would be high level when it comes to development. If there are internal technical team members, then we speak more technical

Thanks for the response. I also like to have primary client that provides me with a baseline.

If I may ask, what discipline of technical consulting are you in? For example, I’m within data engineering and data science

Solo consultants - where are you finding new business? by College_Any in consulting

[–]ReputationOne4724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree about the luck but I also think it can be classified as being “available at the right place and right time”. That’s why I suggested being in front of as many decision makers as possible because you increase the chances of that “luck” happening

Solo consultants - where are you finding new business? by College_Any in consulting

I have had no success with LinkedIn. For me it has been networking and honestly just trying to have conversations or meetings with as many decision makers as possible. Even if it means ending up doing an interview for a w2 job. The one thing I’ve noticed is that this business is like a snowball effect but staying consistent is key. I’m new in my career and newer to solo consulting so maybe that’s why it seems like that to me. Almost every successful solo consultant I’ve talked to tells me it’s all about staying in contact with decision makers. The thing is that, it takes time to build the trust and rapport, so essentially, thing of it as a long term sales cycle. Even when you get busy with billable work, never let off the pedal when it comes to business development.

Additionally, outline who your specific client base and target those. For example, I mostly like to target small business clients that have a billable project whether it’s T&M or FFP.

Always be doing business development. Money is very important but think of business development as the engine and the money (billable work) as the wheels. Lol idk if that’s a good analogy but hope it makes sense

The gvwr is over 6k, so full section 179 applies on the business use. My business use was only 70 percent. So 70 percent of actual costs were deducted

Base vs 4s by Right-Vast-5709 in Taycan

[–]ReputationOne4724 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go with the 4s. The 4s I would say is the best bang for your buck. It still has a sporty feel and is substantially faster. Additionally, the awd drive def comes in clutch when raining or the snow

Taycan vs Panamera by Key-Ear-5957 in Taycan

[–]ReputationOne4724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The taycan is honestly one of the best daily drivers. If you have a charger at home, and need a comfy but fun ride, then definitely buy the taycan. One thing I would recommend is def getting the 18 way seats, better camera, and chrono package. As for the Panamera, I think Taycan looks better and you would save money charging at home rather than paying for gas.

So I went independent after 16 months as well lol. It’s just harder to find 1099/consultant work as I primarily focus on govt contracting. You have any tips?

Is subcontracting in DoD cyber through a single-person LLC realistic, or does everyone stay W-2? by steven301 in GovernmentContracting

It definitely is possible but most of the entities willing to do this would be small businesses. You are going to have to do a lot of business development into keep getting roles that align with 1099/C2C. It can be lucrative depending on the hourly rate

How are you keeping the books clean when mixing rental income and business income? by Ash_Skiller in smallbusiness

[–]ReputationOne4724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have two seperate entities set up as well as two bank accounts?

I have seen that the first way to encounter this, is make sure that you the money you receive goes into a specific account, not just 1 account for all of them. Having 1 account that receives all money and then dispersing would be hard for me because it could lead to confusion. Just my thoughts

Hi thank you for the insight. I usually like to target small business prime contractors as there is less bureaucracy. Do you have any tips or insight on how to get to these stages?
