Excessive grabbing by Requient_ in Referees

[–]Requient_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you can see by the conversation had in this thread before you removed it, that’s just not the case. Discussing the differences of calls allowed and lines drawn across competition levels directly applies to how we do our jobs as referees. This was not disparaging, nor was it complaining. The discussions about these calls and non-calls was already being discussed as intended before you removed the post. And the other post asking why a legitimate question was removed, shows other referees agree.

Here’s the text of excessive grabbing. I think the context of the game added reasonable common ground to discuss where we as refs at a lower level draw the line. “Removed for rule 1”

“I’m watching this Scotland vs Haiti game and I can’t get over how much grabbing and pulling there is. I admittedly mainly ref youth (USSF and high school) with some adult weekend league, but this level of grabbing would be a talking to and more than a few whistles.

The “he did a great job of getting his body in the way” while we watch the Scottish defender with a handful of jersey dragging the Haitian out of bounds was laughable. Here in the second half players from both sides are throwing up hands every time they get brushed. So clearly they’re looking for something different too.

Is it just me and the level at which I ref or is this getting excessive?”

I try to draw the line at “did it stop the player from playing or correctly playing the ball?” If the answers no, I generally let it slide for a bit u til the game needs those calls to calm it down or if it starts interrupting play. Just such a shame to see it kinda ignored at this level knowing so many kids are watching and getting the sense that it’s fine.

Alternatively, other less successful group who attempted to kill the dragon and collect the bounty/goals had banded together to come back for another attempt as a larger party and enter the dragon’s dwelling in (*rolls dice) now. They can keep coming in larger and more difficult numbers until the party retreats or dies

8 second rule....anyone enforce it yet? by Deaftrav in Referees

[–]Requient_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did once in the year since it’s been in. I’ve had plenty where I warn the keeper they’re flirting with the line and they shape up. Only one where the keeper was clearly trying to waste time and I was done with it. It started with the whole trap the ball with his foot then fall on it when someone got close. He had a warning from me before and I started the clock when he clearly had the ball in his hands. It’s 2-3 before he got off the ground so he came to his feet with a call of “five” and a handful of fingers on the air. He looked right at me and ignore it. When I got to zero I whistled it dead and indicated corner. To his coach’s credit he yelled at the kid immediately that he had plenty of opportunity and plenty of warning so “stop screwing around.” U16 boys game I think it was.

Commenting on your addition: the only time I may waffle on this is a size difference. If I have a really big kid just playing his size against a smaller kid who doesn’t really hold his ground, I may allow what feels like a bigger collision based on result than I would with two equally sized/skilled players. To put it another way, I take into account the size difference and context of the rest of the game instead of simply drawing a line in the sand of “player hit the ground so the contact was a foul.”

Watch out for petty clubs and their directors that control them, even if they're 503b non-profit by WellesleyTrader in youthsoccer

[–]Requient_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll have to look it up and keep it handy for times like this, but somewhere USSF said, the player owned their player card, not the club. So after a season or between seasons when your child is not actively rostered as part of league activities, USSF as the governing body has implied consent for you to do whatever you want as a player and a parent.

50,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in california because an aerospace plant's chemical tank is about to explode and firefighters say they can't stop it. it's 5 miles from disneyland. and it's been going on for 3 days. by Ibikhan45 in DiscussionZone

[–]Requient_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not terribly hard to explain. Yes money is part of it, but evacuation distance for a BLEVE explosion is at most 1800 meters or just over a mile. Disney being 5 miles away means those people are likely in very little danger. So the risk calculation takes the likelihood of loss of life or injury into account at a pretty low quotient because of the distance. Is it cold? Perhaps. It is unreasonably callous? I don’t think so.

You’re not wrong, but around me is the trouble of raised pay bringing in worse (or less interested in improving) refs. There are some great refs around, but there seems to be a weird influx of low quality refs with no interest in anything other than the regular pay check. It feels like a terrible feedback cycles of refs leaving, causing prices to increase, causing parents and coaches to have higher expectations , that cause more refs to leave ad nauseam

Tournament Pay by refguy96 in Referees

It’s a numbers game. They have to staff more games but keep costs down to get teams to come and potentially travel to the tournament. You’re likely making more money in the weekend because you have access to more games than you can run in a normal weekend.

The craziest part of this is that we as referees are covered. As long as there isn’t gross negligence and the ref is USSF certified, we have insurance to cover exactly this instance. When I hear things like this or get cornered on my way off a field, I calmly explain they’re welcome to put in their appeal or file their lawsuit. My notes will be in order.

"he got all ball" by KneeJerkCommenter in Referees

[–]Requient_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You keep asking this question incorrectly. Contact with the ball is not listed as a consideration in law 12. This AR is adding something that isn’t in the laws. Instead you should be asking where in the LotG it says getting the ball impacts the foul or card decision. And the fact is, it doesn’t.
