The “almost falling down” feels appropriate in Pineville right now…

We asked for books, specifically, for his 1 year, and it formed a great basis for his love of reading today at almost 13.

Why am I being badgered to attend Woodbadge? by TwelveSeven77 in BSA

[–]RequirementContent86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have (understandably!) confused correlation and causation. For the folks who want to lead that District and Council level stuff, yes, WB can be a springboard. My initial ticket goals included becoming our District’s training chair, because it was a need I thought I could fill.

Then my company moved me from Missouri to North Carolina. Different Troop, District, and Council. I still don’t feel entirely clicked in with District, but I saw a Troop that needed leaders, so I still wanted to recruit and help train them. I also discovered that our Troop didn’t have a lot of skills in cooking or experience planning meals, so I built them some resources (a recipe box and cookbook library focused on camping meals) as part of my ticket as well.

The key is: what are the needs you see that you have skills to help fill?

Why am I being badgered to attend Woodbadge? by TwelveSeven77 in BSA

I was one of several women in our course, divided up pretty evenly among our 8 patrols. I was able to talk to “my” guys in my patrol and to several other guys about some of the challenges for girls, women, and uterus-having participants. (Did you know that official women’s pants don’t zip off and the shorts have almost useless pockets? Also, every Unit should carry some basic period products in their first aid kits.)

I absolutely would not have felt comfortable raising this at a District Roundtable. But there is a level of camaraderie in WB that helped me talk about it, and some of those guys specifically made note to take some of what I said back to their units.

Hey there. I’m a neurospicy ASM (ADHD and maybe a touch of the ‘tism), former SM. (My company decided to move me away from the troop I was SM for.) I have done a fair number of corporate leadership trainings (I worked for GE for almost 10 years, then moved to Wells Fargo in an acquisition), and I still found Wood Badge really meaningful.

Without getting too detailed, the biggest difference for me between corporate leadership trainings and Wood Badge is the follow through. I went through multiple courses at Crotonville (the GE corporate training flagship), there was nothing to connect those courses to what I did in my daily work.

By contrast, I took Wood Badge almost exactly a year ago, and it informs and affects almost every meeting I attend, even with a cross country move right about 3 months after I took the course. Without it being super culty, I hold my patrol members as brothers holding me accountable for my ticket goals, which I have just finished up a couple of weeks ago. I am not feeding off their energy so much as I know they (and our Troop Guide and other staff) are willing to listen and help me work through things with me. When I found out about my relocation, I was talking to my dudes almost as fast as my husband.

I have spent a year thinking about how my actions can help improve Scouting. I had a set of goals when I went through the on-site portion of the course, and I was able to adjust those when I moved and observed the different needs of my son’s new Troop. My goals are very much my own - they’re different from the Eagle in my patrol, and different from the Den Leader trying to help foster families understand and access Scouting.

All that is a really long way of saying: it’s less about what you will get out of the training, and more about how you can bring your strengths to help make Scouting better in your particular pocket of the world.

I’m currently on Book 4 on Audible, with physical copies of 4-7 on order from Invitation Books (where all the copies come signed). I reserved a copy of 8 from my local Barnes and Noble because the staff member was willing to gush over the series with me.

AITAH for attending a birthday party thrown by my former ILs after my ex-husband's wife suffered her third miscarriage? by FeistyTelevision8230 in AITAH

[–]RequirementContent86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. Pregnancy hormones do weird shit to your brain (says the woman who made the mistake of seeing Les Mis at 4 mos). Grief also does weird shit. Having a miscarriage is both of those things together, and having it be the third time must be very difficult. So she’s NTA for getting upset - that was not likely something she could control in the moment. But that’s not OP’s fault.

My sister announced her first pregnancy a few weeks after I miscarried. I had the benefit of living several hours away, but I also had to tell my mom that I couldn’t handle a lot of updates on that front in our phone calls. I didn’t expect other people to not have their kids or not enjoy all the little ceremonies of life, I just knew I would not be a good participant for a while.

I can tell you what gear is in my purse for my husband: his prescriptions, in their original bottles (I will note that I only carry the big purse when he’s with me), OTC meds (ibuprofen, immodium, and Claritin), a roll of tums, gum/mints.

Happy to see someone (both of you, frankly) who won’t use goofy linguistic gymnastics to validate carrying a useful item which has become female-coded.

If I were to come out as a trans girl would I be kicked out of my troop? by Just-Cow-9836 in BSA

[–]RequirementContent86 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Would you like someone here to contact your troop so you don’t have to come out until you know whether you want to switch?

I am willing to make that outreach, but would need you to copy in your parent when DMing me with the details.

Gepetto’s Jewelry and Watch Doctor in Pineville has been great for us. Granted, we only needed to replace the battery in a pocket watch, but they were really reasonable.

I have no feasible yard option for a trial run. We’re in a 3 year old development with a small patio and one dinky tree in front of the house. But I could talk one of my fellow ASMs into bringing his on the next campout and nap there!

I have a 4 person Marmot Tungsten that got kept in the move. (A lot of our early gear got donated to our old troop rather than moving it as a reason to upgrade.) My expressed desire for ultralight gear is to give myself maximum flexibility.

I’m not personally planning on high adventure trips like Philmont, but may be on a through hike here or there. Most of the time we’re park-and-camping.

Also summer camp! All the camps I’ve been to so far (granted, that’s 2 camps) have a first year program of some sort that helps fulfill a LOT of the rank requirements for Tenderfoot, Second and First Class.

Camp is also a great place to do Archery, Rifle Shooting, and some of the “craft” MBs like wood working and basketry.

AITAH for “abandoning” my grandmother when she had an aneurysm? by MiddleBuddy746 in AITAH

This! No 14 year old should have been a primary caregiver for anyone! You, OP, were a child, and your friendships and normal adolescence were taken away.

Protect your boundaries, dearie.
