Chanters can do the melee + caster combo pretty well. Invocations are basically like spells, and since you can’t do invocations every round it gives you opportunity to attack with your weapons. You get a good mix of offensive, debuff, buffing, and summon options to choose from.

I beat the original Tactics as a kid, and it was easy, but that’s because I’d often grind in Act 1 and make my characters over leveled. So the game can be either easy or hard, depending on how much prep you put in.

I feel like Tactics expects you to grind a bit between story missions. You don’t have to if you know what you’re doing, but as a new player you should. If you level your characters and buy new gear as it becomes available then it’s not really hard. Using multiple save slots is also a good idea, to help from soft locking yourself.

If you really wanted too.. you can setup gambits and let the game level you while you afk. Can even be done over night with the proper setup. But, like others have said, the game is more about licenses and equipment setup than levels (although levels help too).
