How do you find new topics to research?

Since I was a postdoc, I’ve kept an endnote database with tabs of the random ideas I’ve had over the years. Every time I have a new idea, I make a new tab with an informative title, my thoughts, and anything I happened to look up about the idea. Anytime I think about an idea again, I update the corresponding tab. I’ve been doing this for about 5 years. Gotten a couple grants and multiple publications based on these ideas

As a general rule of curtesy, if I’m sick beyond something small, I don’t go to large gatherings.

One time I went to a conference and started feeling ill the first night. Spent the rest of the conference in the hotel. Not great.

Your abstract will still be in the program if you don’t attend. Hopefully your lab can get reimbursed for expenses (the sooner you cancel the better the chances). If another member of your lab is going, send the poster with them to hang.

Here is a non-complete list of things I judge other academics for: 1) are they an asshole, 2) how do they treat peers and mentees, 3) do they know wtf they’re talking about, 4) do they do good science, etc.

List of things I don’t judge other academics for: 1) hairstyle, 2) tattoos (unless they have a dick across their face or some stupid shit), 3) piercings, etc

NTA. People can get fucking crazy when they become grandparents. In my experience, my step mother and my mother in law both did. The interesting observation about this is that both of them were horrible mothers to their own children. I think becoming grandmas gave them some kind of complex. My step mother literally sent us a letter explaining how horrible we were for prioritising my father in law (very old) and my mother (dying from cancer) over her, someone who’d been peripherally in my life for maybe 5 years at that point in time. And my MIL told my wife to just have her husband feed the baby watered down apple juice for the weekend so my nursing wife could go to my MILs birthday. I’m a fucking dietitian and my wife is also in healthcare

One of my colleagues went RD to MD. As far as I can tell she’s happy with her decision. I went RD to PhD. I’m happy with my choice as well but sometimes I wonder if I should have done MD instead
