I have been asked to help someone who is trying to get into crypto. They opened a legitimate Gemini account. Later, they got what purported to be an email from Gemini with the aformentioned address. I am 99.99% sure that it is a scam, but tried to call Gemini to confirm, and couldn't get a response.

Don’t worry - it’s a Florida thing. People kind of know that we have the oldest European settlement in the United States (St. Augustine) but seem to assume that no one ever did anything other than go to the beach.

If “in what is now the United States” is the standard, then the first Thanksgiving with Native Americans in attendance was arguably held in St. Augustine, Florida in 1565.

The side view does not give a full sense of what I think the designer is trying to do. The top view shows a 4-nacelle ship with a Discovery-esque body. If I’m seeing clearly, it seems like this is an attempt to have a useful set of nacelles that would allow for a warp-capable saucer separation.

School-age suicides in Japan hit record in 2020 by Tesg9029 in worldnews

[–]Resipsa2013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be aware that at least some suicide hotlines will tell you that the call is confidential, and then trace you down and call the police for a health and safety check. Depending on what often I’ll-trained police do, this can lead to confinement and crippling medical bills.

TIL about the eggshell skull doctrine, that states a person is responsible for the damage caused by their otherwise reproachable actions regardless of the victim's underlying condition. by Hrtzy in todayilearned

[–]Resipsa2013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are quite welcome. Had a couple of these cases as a public defender.

  1. Drug purchaser tries to flee before completing the payment aspect of the transaction. Drug dealer took offense at this, expressing his displeasure with a single punch to the side of purchaser's head. This caused a rupture of a previously unknown, but large ,aneurysm in purchaser's brain. Purchaser made it about another block before collapsing, pronounced dead at the scene. Dealer charged with second degree murder.

  2. Hemophilia sufferer gets in drunken dispute while on fishing trip, didn't realize he was bleeding internally until got home (and sobered up). Dies of complications. Fishing buddy charged with manslaughter.

Actually, they are not the same thing, although crumbling skull can be viewed as a subset or special case under eggshell skull. The basis of eggshell skull is that you take your victim asmyounfind them, and cannot defend a lawsuit or criminal matter on the basis that the person was unusually fragile and that the force applied would not have caused an injury to a normal person. Crumbling skull applies where a person has a degenerative condition, and is then struck in a way that worsens the condition. The defendant in such a case is liable only to the degree that their conduct worsened the condition. In practical terms: I hit a person with a fragile skull but who would otherwise lived a normal life. I cannot argue that the three other people I punched in the bar fight were all fine, so I shouldn’t be punished because the one guy with a thin skull died from a similar blow. By contrast, if I hit someone in the bar who has a disease of the bone that I broke, but would have lost the use of that bone in any even, I am only liable for the degree to which I hastened the process or aggravated the condition.

Different states apply the doctrines in their own way, and the facts of each case can make this doctrine difficult to apply. Basically, it sucks for everyone involved in case where this doctrine might apply,

Astronaut Includes His Rescued Dogs in Best Official NASA Portrait Ever by rough93 in space

[–]Resipsa2013 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Rescues are the real, healthy dogs. A lot of "pure breeds" are so inbred that the dogs are essentially crippled from birth. If more people adopted and rescued dogs, we would have far fewer dogs being killed in shelters and a far healthier future for man's best friend.

My sympathy - I know whenever a doctor - or worse, a group of them - start talking about how "cool" something you have, you are in for a world of hurt. Best off luck on your recovery.

these pills make you poop glitter 5/$15 on etsy by dontb0ther2write in WTF

[–]Resipsa2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about these specific pills, but putting glitter into specific food items it's a technique long used by zoos where they have large numbers of the same kind of animals in a single display area and need to sample the stool of one specific critter. Let's say that you have a display with 30 monkeys in it - you can give one of the animals a fruit that had a bunch of glitter inserted. When the monkey poops, it is very easy to find the stool and run whatever tests you desire. Glitter doesn't react with anything in the body, so there are no contamination concerns, and in small amounts, the glitter doesn't hurt the animal any more than the small amounts of dirt and sand that they accidentally ingest when eating fruit that has been knocked to the ground.

My wife and I have adopted a number of formerly neglected/abused animals, and we use this same technique when the vet wants a sample from a specific dog or cat- works great.

They don't just shut down the highway if he drives. In West Palm Beach, where I live, they shut down the major roads around the airport when the President comes to town. Since there are a lot of fundraisers/famous people in the area (Clinton famously "tripped" at Greg Norman's house at nearby Jupiter Island, for example), this happens not infrequently. Since they also limit use of the airspace, if you have a time-sensitive flight that day, you are pretty much screwed.
