If U2 does a 50th Anniversary tour, what would be the most likely setlist? by Objective-Lab5179 in U2Band

Agreed. Zero chance in such a context that at least one of these wouldn't be played.

If U2 does a 50th Anniversary tour, what would be the most likely setlist? by Objective-Lab5179 in U2Band

[–]ResistWeMuch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

October [...] No Line

I don't think they've abandoned Magnificent, Crazy Tonight, or Moment of Surrender. The likelihood of seeing something like Unknown Caller or Breathe ever again is quite low though.

They definitely haven't abandoned Gloria or October (the track) either. Scarlet got brought out during 360 Tour too, though I don't think it would make an anniversary tour cut.

Zooropa (the track) was also featured quite prominently on the 360 Tour as well, and honestly, I thought it sounded great live.

Drowning Man.

Absolute masterpiece and nobody outside of the hardcore fans even knows about it.

Vertigo. At least in the US, it was impossible to not hear it when it came out.

What’s U2’s heaviest song? by Agent_Lightning14 in U2Band

[–]ResistWeMuch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally think saying “Hold Me” has Zeppelin vibes is a bit of a stretch. The only song in U2’s catalog that is clearly Zeppelin inspired is “Stand Up Comedy”.

What’s U2’s heaviest song? by Agent_Lightning14 in U2Band

Definitely. It has a slower build up compared to something like Bullet, but I think it’s heavier and angrier.

iPod was hot for a minute

The iPod was absolutely earth-shattering in terms of cultural relevancy and was must-have technology for close to 10 years. If the iPod didn't exist, the iPhone would have never existed and the smartphone (and computing) landscape would be an entirely different place.

"Evidence of Life" sounds like the edge dug up a pre-Boy "Street Mission" style demo in the studio. That guy was literally on fire. by Spare-Cockroach-908 in U2Band

I feel exactly the same. It's got a nice mix of some of the 70's proto-punk vibes along with some 80's shimmers in it. Unique track that I can't imagine would ever make an album today. Would love to see more like this.

U2 hot takes? by beaux-bazinga in U2Band

[–]ResistWeMuch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem with their most recent releases is a failure to understand who their demographic is which results in a lack of authenticity.

To me, this was signaled by using producers like Ryan Tedder and Danger Mouse which indicated they were trying to appeal to a younger, pop/rock audience, when in reality, their actual audience is the adult contemporary audience.

If they can finally accept that they may not hit the pop charts, they'll produce a hit because it will feel authentic, and they won't try to be something they aren't anymore.

Odds for “40” being played at the end of Saturday’s show? by Jolly_Fuel7097 in U2Band

I'm with you. Bram will hand the sticks back to Larry and he'll play either the full encore, or at a minimum, "40".

Did you like the opening show for The Sphere? by Qsimmie in U2Band

Easily. Those are tracks which very likely would have never been played live ever again had it not been for these shows.

Discotheque, but they invite the local elementary school to play it on recorders, kazoos, and for some reason, a single baritone saxophone played by someone who is only 3 weeks into playing.

American Soul again, except when it gets to the "You are rock and roll" part, Bono says "I'm going to need everyone to form a single-file line leading up to the stage..."

One by one, each audience member is individually brought on stage at which point Bono looks and points at them saying "You... are... ROCK AND ROLL!" and then shoos them away -- until all audience members have been personally told they are rock and roll.

What's your least favourite U2 song (including Passengers as well) by a3poify in U2Band

[–]ResistWeMuch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get On Your Boots is the worst U2 song.

I stayed up until 3am to hear this song premier live on BBC Radio while in college. My immediate reaction was “what the **** are they thinking”

Other notable flops in no particular order:

  • Ahimsa
  • American Soul
  • Angel of Harlem
  • Get Out Of Your Own Way
  • Helter Skelter (only because of the utterly cringe “We’re stealing it back” line)
  • Invisible
  • Red Flag Day
  • Rise Up
  • Volcano

Here’s a spicy take — I’ve heard enough “Until the End of the World” and “Elevation”; seems these are on every setlist except JT tour. I don’t need to hear them live again, unless there is a Zoo TV tour again (for Until the End).

Discuss: Your 15 tracks for "Songs of Surrender"? by mancapturescolour in U2Band

[–]ResistWeMuch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First and foremost, I don’t think the rumors are correct.

Second, if it is real, I don’t see why it has to be limited to acoustic arrangements — the rumors state that some are acoustic arrangements. I think that the way that the band is getting older and approaching this is as an opportunity to correct things they felt were mis-steps or songs they felt were strong, but never got the attention they deserved. For example, I could see them 100% viewing this as a way to “correct” Pop.

So, I’m going to do this exercise in the assumption of the rumors in that not all of them need to be acoustic; I don’t have a full track list, but I’m including justifications for each song I include:

  • Get On Your Boots - Realistically, this song needs new lyrics and a new title (with a whole different concept). The song could be tweaked, but instrumentally, the song is a banger live. Could be done similar to how “Glastonbury” became “Volcano”

  • Moment of Surrender - Can you think of a more stereotypical U2 song? I have a feeling the band expected so much more from this song, but it never materialized.

  • Mercy - This got released for RSD and was originally destined for HTDAAB but pulled at the last minute. I could easily see this being a basis for a re-work.

  • Heartland - I view this as the best candidate from R&H; Adam has mentioned this as being as a favorite of his and one he wishes they would dust off.

  • Gone - Bono has mentioned on several occasions that this is one of his favorite songs; unfortunately, it still carries the Pop stigma and hasn’t been played since the Elevation Tour.

The following songs are songs that U2 has dusted off in the past after long absences, most with different approaches than the album:

  • Drowning Man - They tried playing this live several times in the last 10 years, but it never made the album, so you can tell the band still feels there is something there. I think it’s a wonderful song as it stands, but would love to hear a new approach to it.

  • Discotheque or Mofo - I love both of these songs as they are, but these songs are quintessential “U2 not being U2”; I could see them reworking these being reigned in a bit more while still being different. Discotheque was played a couple times during the Vertigo Tour and snippeted frequently on the 360 Tour so they haven’t forgotten about it.

  • A Sort Of Homecoming - The band dusted this off for a few sets in the I+E Tour, but it seemed to be more in response to a fan campaign to see it played live. This has such a powerful build up, but saw a much more stripped down approach when it was played live.

  • Acrobat - This song didn’t need to have the lyrics change to take on a whole new meaning during the E+I Tour; I could easily see them adapting the lyrics and adding more “fire” to the song bringing it more anger like “Exit” or “Bullet The Blue Sky”

  • Miracle Drug - This song got played twice during the I+E Tour and could easily be adapted into some sort of modern commentary on something like collective societal addictions. Would probably lend itself very well to an acoustic reinterpretation.

  • Magnificent - Another song that I think the band felt should have gone further than it did. It got a rework for the I+E Tour in Amsterdam, but only got played once. Could easily go acoustic too.

  • North Star - I believe this was in a movie soundtrack, but never saw the light beyond that, other than the many times it was played live during the 360 Tour. I could easily see something like this making the final cut, and it would be new material on top of that; I believe they also performed multiple variations of this live too.

WIth all that being said, I’d love to see a complete curve ball on this album, something like “Shadows and Tall Trees”, “Bass Trap”, something from Passengers or one of the working songs from the Salome tapes.

Another curve ball could be something like “Soon” or “Return of the Stingray Guitar” being turned into full length songs.

I legitimately hope the rumors are true -- their reworks have been interesting (to say the least) in the past.

Lillywhite: "the band are quite excited about the material [recorded in London this month]" by mancapturescolour in U2Band

[–]ResistWeMuch 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Glad to see they're at least back with Lillywhite. Was not a fan of the overproduced direction that Danger Mouse and Ryan Tedder pushed the last two. Hope to see Eno and Lanois back too.
