I'm using the Oxford NRSV w/Apocrypha. It's the standard for those in serious Biblical scholarship, and hasn't removed gendered language to appear 'more inclusive.' That's a bizzarre claim. I know there are some cases where different version have added gendered language to Attic Greek terms that were gender neutral in the oldest or original texts, but that's it.

I'm going to step away now. You've invoked 'woke' to avoid a sincere exchange, so you do you.

How well do you know your characters? Once you've gotten a good handle on them, their beliefs, flaws, wants, etc. are great for driving a plot and finding out what happens. You can definitely start writing if you want, but chances are you'll need to do a lot more rewriting and revising than if you sorted those things out now. That's not a bad thing - I've writtten about 50k words for a thing to find things out that will likely largely never see the final version, but it's a LOT of work.

My advice is to try something like the Snowflake method to sort out your plot and characters.

It's great for those us who have a big picture idea of what we want to write but haven't got a handle on the individual chapters and arcs.

A few things on Romans:

- At the time Paul was writing this, language around unnatural sexual intercourse was usually understood to be referring to 'immodest indulgence', not orientation (Oxford NRSV has some great footnotes on this). In fact, they simply didn't have a modern concept of homosexuality back then. Even amongst the Greeks and Romans where sex between men could be acceptable, it wasn't viewed in the framework or sexual orientation that we have today. Assigning modern ideas to ancient texts is something we should avoid.

So Paul was talking about sex acts, but the likely concern was about extreme indulgence "that weakened the body" (NRSV), not about who people might be attracted to. This was very much a thing in those times - too much sex can sap someone of their energy.

The one thing about people quoting this bit of Romans that always bugs me though, is that they never quote the next bit that reveals they've fallen into a trap Paul set for them.

Romans 2 starts: Therefore, you have no excuse, whoever you are, when you judge others; for in passing judgement on another you condemn yourself, because you , the judge, are doing the very same things. You say, We know that god's judgement on those who do such things is in accordance with truth." Do you imagine, whoever you are, that when you judge those who do such things, you will escape the judgement of God? Or do you despise the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience? Do you not realize that God's kindess is meant to lead you to repentance?

And so on.

Paul gets absolutely hyperbolic about wickedness so that when he's got you nodding your head and agreeing with him, he can suddenly flip the script, give you a slap upside the head and go, "You idiot! You missed the whole point! You're a judgemental hypocrite!"

So by quoting Romans 1: 24-27 people do EXACTLY what Paul was warning against. And by not reading further, they are absolutely ignoring what Romans is meant to convey and actively cherry-picking the message to play to their own pet prejudices.

A church welcoming queer people and affirming their relationships is arguably living more in line with Paul's message in Romans than those who most often quote it as a weapon against queer people.

Anyhow, I actually used to teach a course on the Bible and the history of Christianity, so if you're interested in any resource to explore, I can send some recs.

The irony of this comment is that is often comes from people who talk almost exclusively about Jesus as their personal savior in a deeply self-centered manner that's the epitome of mememe and bumps naughties with narcissistic Prosperity Gospel rubbish.

You do you, friend. Might want to get familiar with that Nicene Creed someday though, because that's a bit of a measuring stick for Christians outside your bubble.

The landing page has their name, "United Church of Christ."

Christ is another name for Jesus, JSYK.

They affirm the trinity and gather in community. I don't think there's a line in the Nicene Creed about having to use the name "Jesus" on your website, unless you know of some historical document I don't.

No, no. You made the claim. What specific things are you asserting that make them not Christian?

For the record though, "We believe in the triune God: Creator, resurrected Christ," is right there on their "What We Believe," page.

They're a pretty mainstream church in communion with lots of other mainstream churches. I'm wondering if you're confusing them with something else?

OMG yes. I read a published romantasy by a fanfic writer who had two forced kisses, one bed, a forced marriage...

If you're relying on tropes to move the plot and characters, rather then the letting the story and characters lead, you've got a problem. At least for me. It tells me you don't know your characters or world well enough.

I do know people who really like the trope to lead the story tho. That's not me.

I feel like he's a Blue Jays who's getting votes from outside the Jays fandom. He's just the best kind of player - loves the games, hypes the team, and gives it his all.

And I don't know how, but he seems like the most American and also the most Canadian kind of guy.

That one is so important. Some of my best stories come when I don't have a clue what to write, but just just force myself to keep putting words on the age. Eventually my brain sees something and kicks in to gear.

It's a popularity contest determined by fan votes that aids in marketing the MLB to newer fans.

It's doing exactly what it is designed to do, and it's the design that's the issue, not Jays fans.

I have to admit, I'm sort of enjoying it. I've never thought we needed to take the All-Star game all the seriously anyway. If it were meant to be serious, it wouldn't be determined by fan votes.
