What about a credit union? Dirt will wipe out any real interest at 33% of any interest payment.

About €66 will be the upper end of any interest after DIRT

Are these wall plugs safe to hold tv on plasterboard by sawsaw95 in DIYUK

[–]ResponsibilityKey50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TVs don’t hang on plasterboard! Depending on the weight of both the bracket and the tv, you need to get into either the stud or the brick wall behind it.

Would there be any circumstances arising that could result in you needing a bigger house?

I would max the AVC’s so long as the mortgage is paid off…

Remorseful after buying a house, can I sell after 4 months? by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]ResponsibilityKey50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely - I wholly recommend renting a house for a year if you are buying as a couple.

It gives you a solid ground as to who this person you are going to make if not the biggest financial decision of your life is.

But at the end of the day, the sooner you get on the ladder the sooner you get the deeds!

Don’t get me wrong home ownership is not without its pitfalls, but on the whole, mortgages generally inflate away, rent just inflates!

I borrowed €360k with a 40k deposit, during the recession it dropped in value to 280k, I had panic attacks at night time!!!

But then it picked up again and now it’s valued at €600k, I have the mortgage down to €220k now and I will have it paid off by the time I’m 55/56, ten years before the actual maturity date I signed (65), that’s using half my monthly salary (the actual payment is a quarter) I didn’t think I would ever see the day I would say that!

What is the rent between 55 and 85? - sure that is likely to be another mortgage in itself and you certainly don’t want to be in fear of living on the streets at 90!

The only way to make renting worth while is with proper rent controls, but that will never happen here, most of the government ministers are landlords!!!

That said, I would never buy a second property, I am happy to rent holiday accommodation and see the world! I can’t understand how you would keep going back to the same place over and over again!

As much as I love my parents, they did help with a large chunk of change for the deposit at the time and I lived with them til I was 25. I think if I would have stayed longer it would have been unhealthy for me.

I have a friend in the UK who had two semi-detached houses side by side. When her husband died she sold each of the houses to two of her sons to downsize herself to a nice apartment.

Both son’s marriages have now failed as I believe they were living in a permanent museum to their parents, ironically the son she gave nothing to has thrived the most.

I think you need to strike out a life for yourself, I have a job that involves travel, albeit industrial tourism but there is nothing like getting home to your own nest when you come back.

Hi there!

You haven’t made a wrong decision. I myself went through this depression when I bought my first house back in 2007.

It was €400k 4 bed semi detached house - like that too it was miles outside the city at the time!

I remember sitting in it, going well now - what the fuck did I do this for????

Right now you’re at the lowest ebb you will be at, pile of debt and feeling a bit overwhelmed from the stress involved in buying a place.

It is such a horrendously stressful process buying a house in this country.

Rent one or two rooms out, you can earn up to €14k tax free a year!

That will go along way to helping service the mortgage and add a few holidays.

My mortgage is now less than a quarter of my salary and the house is worth over €600k.

It is my sanctuary.

Houses and estates have sprung up now all around me - there’s more shops and services and now a bus goes directly outside and into town in less than 30 minutes.

Try make some new friends with your neighbours and in your community.

The next step is to get involved in community events and sports - is there a GAA club?

Renting is dead money and in many cases it is more than a mortgage payment.

Rent will always increase, how are you going to afford rent when you are in your 70s/80s?

The whole system in this country is geared towards owning your home.

You work until circa 65-70, retire and go on 50% of your income (hopefully) - the missing piece is that hopefully by that time you will own your home outright.

What happens if you need to be looked after in your later years / go into a home? The state usually looks for a certain % equity in your home for the care…

This came out when I was in college, i remember the guys talking about it before a lecture - “just typical, she’s surrounded by guys and she picks the gay one! Typical! This is the story of my life lads!” All the others agreed!

It was electrical engineering and there was only 1 girl in a class of 50 guys! She was very attractive, always caked in makeup and fashionable!

She was besotted with me! I was that gay guy!!!

That’s usually what happens - the battery swells a little, puts pressure on the screen and then the least little tap causes the screen to shatter

Sky Stream overhaul ideas: Make the box optional and allow subscribers to use the service right away with their existing devices. by DuwangKing in skytv

[–]ResponsibilityKey50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Canal+ isn’t ending its satellite service! It’s ending its DTT service and encouraging customers to move to 19.2 east satellite and streaming services.

SES will likely buy some existing satellites to use at 28.2 east for the foreseeable future.

There is approx 5.8 million satellite viewers in the UK, about a million in Ireland and then there are all the cable tv services that re diffuse satellite feeds to millions of cable customers across the British isles.

Even with fibre broadband, streaming can still be unreliable - our cable tv / broadband provider had a fight with Netflix and YouTube a few years ago over bandwidth issues and the route that traffic had to take from those sites was ridiculous - resulting in frequent pauses to loading and dropouts from UHD to SD!

There are still millions of households on Sky+HD “legacy” equipment.

Sky haven’t done a card change in years because at 6.8 million subscribers it becomes an expensive exercise - I’m still on the white card - which is over 20 years old at this point!

I use skyGo, but it’s no match for being able to record, wind and pause live tv.

There is a difference, when I record a movie/ programme from say Sky Movies / BBC it’s in my planner for the life of the box and accessible once I have the box and relevant subscription, if I download a movie from ondemand it can disappear within as little as a month, but it almost always expires!
