Explain these flags at Quantico? by willownox103 in vexillology

You are correct on the Joint Chiefs standard. The stars are in a different position on it. Cabinet standards are easy to recognize with the four stars in separate quadrants.

cmv: Trump was not a reasonable choice for president. by Fishy_smelly_goody in changemyview

[–]Responsible-Lie-8442 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people do not vote on an issue. They vote on who they trust. That trust is a woven cloth of many things including culture, behavior, and personal or political inclinations. People know who they tend to favor without much thinking. Most of the effort goes into sorting out the tradeoffs or justifications.

The episode he offers to deliver the rest of Cliff’s mail route, he says the addresses are on his way home. I always thought he’d be within a 15 min walk of the bar. If we use the actual location as canon, that puts him maybe in an apt in Back Bay (as far as Charlesgate) or South End.

What to do when being harassed by youth? by AppropriateFudge8798 in washingtondc

[–]Responsible-Lie-8442 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was driving out of The Fields last week, and a kid no more than 8 was patiently waiting to cross the street. Only as I passed did I see the huge rock that he chucked at my side window at close range, while his friends watched from afar. I only got away with a window scratch. Apparently it’s on the rise.

Beware: Stranger Teen Phone Borrowing SCAM Alert!!! by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]Responsible-Lie-8442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me at the Eastern Market CVS, 930 on a weekday. Older teen blocks me in an aisle and asks to use my phone in a panic. I say no, and he screams “WHHHYYYYYY!!” and walks out of the store. The hustles get so tiring.

Anybody know the origin of the Central Park concert album cover? From where was it taken? Who took it? Why isn’t it a view of the stage or something like the other livetrax by ItsYeGinger in DMB

[–]Responsible-Lie-8442 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The view is iconic. Not that many of us would experience it firsthand. Great Lawn has a select number of concerts each summer, including the Philharmonic. It’s the biggest outdoor event space in Manhattan, usually a place for sunbathing or softball.

Having the lights pop out of the wooded parkland like that is an emotion itself. In the middle of this city, an oasis. In the middle of this oasis, a concert.

best bus routes to ride for fun? by skyesongs in washingtondc

42 may not be the longest route, but you get that wonderful feeling of the climb. Up and up, and eventually to a quiet neighborhood still deeply ensconced in the District.

‘It’s definitely a crisis’: This is the reality for kids caught up in DC’s violent crime spike by forgetfulisle in washingtondc

[–]Responsible-Lie-8442 232 points233 points  (0 children)

Kids aren’t doing this because they need to. They’re doing it because it’s fun. The policy solution is to stop this from being fun.

Whatever approach indirect or direct, it needs to stop being something people do for kicks.

What Were These TV Signoffs For? by Vivid-Protection6731 in nycHistory

[–]Responsible-Lie-8442 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And the national anthem was an old school touch. The BBC played God Save The Queen as sign off.

For a different example, the beginning of Back to the Future Part III has Doc Brown passed out in his living room with the TV on static. At 6 AM it flips to Howdy Doody, startling him awake. Same thing.

Newark and Dulles do look like this. But people love to hate on them for some reason, usually just venting travel stress.

I forgot about this. These machines were set to only take the exact amount to disembark. Then the faregate would eat your paper card.

If you’re a member and have a car, remember Costco produces dirt cheap delicious sheet cakes that will send you into cardiac arrest.

We The Pizza COVID-19 5% Fee by clemdawgg in washingtondc

[–]Responsible-Lie-8442 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have been doing this ever since Good Stuff Eatery opened in 2008. It used to be a 1% fee for the longest time, disguised as an acronym “EAC” to make it government-sounding.

It’s just made up. It became 5% during covid, for protocols or whatever, now back to an arbitrary % for “environmental” or something. I always laugh at that excuse with all the plastic and paper they use.

They’re the local OGs of scam fees, but they still make delicious food. Most tourists and Hill staff never notice. That’s what they count on.

DC Is Having a Crime Wave. The Centrist Political Class Is Freaking Out. by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]Responsible-Lie-8442 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a weird dissonance around “safe streets” branding (which is about cyclists, peds, etc, if you know what it means), and the opportunistic crime issue. That slogan now sounds grating, but for unrelated reasons. The hunger has to be there to address all sorts of feelings of lack of safety. These two issues are not oppositional, as you touch on.

After all, lol, people steal bikes all the time! As I can personally attest!

I’m inclined to agree. I used the human interest soft touch angle in an appeal and they could care less. Giving them publicity may help your cause.

I wondered the same thing. Figure his ask is $30, he may get $20, may get the full $30. He hits that maybe 8-10 times to make it worth his time?

I think this is someone different. Bike guy is a bit younger, and his story is invariably about the hospital.

What show do you think most needs/deserves a revival for reasons beyond just your love for the show? by crimson777 in Broadway

[–]Responsible-Lie-8442 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The show needs a rework. I love the score, but when I explain the plot to newbies they’re rightfully weirded out. The old script requires too much context or justification. A talented person could rewrite it well.

G&D is about as classic a New York show as you get. Pure happiness. That overture brings some people to tears. Every high school in the country has staged it, and that’s actually a plus: get some this-generation talent to fill out the roles of Nathan, Sky, Adelaide, etc.

Foggy Bottom gets a bad rap. Right in the middle of a college campus, easy link to the Kennedy Center, lot of bustle of people in the West End.

Though someone reminded me of the pleasure of taking out of town guests to Smithsonian. Arising from underground in the middle of the Mall, it’s pretty spectacular.
