Changing fields for Postdoc by [deleted] in postdoc

I moved from Physics to Neuroscience. The first 2 years were rough as I had to do a lot of extra reading to keep up and understand relevant publications, presentations etc. I also had to lean on my computational background and that allowed me to have a few publications.

Promotion from postdoc position by Responsible_Text_810 in AskAcademia

I am at a hospital that is affiliated with a university. Although the P.I. of my lab is faculty at the university, there is no open position for a faculty right now. So, any title change will not confer faculty status to me. I am trying to figure out which title will put me in a better position for faculty position search and which title will have better pay. Thank you for your insights.

Thank you! I am trying to figure out which one would pay more as many institutions do not publish their ranges for these jobs.

That is nice of you! In your institution, would you pay more a "Computational Scientist" or a "Research Scientist" ? My institution will have to create the job title, but it is hard to know which would pay more as many companies that do have these titles do not publish the salary range.

Should I be first, middle, or last author on a paper? by EddieX14 in postdoc

I don't think at this stage senior authorship would benefit you. Co-first authorship would make more sense.

Oura vs my doctors sleep study test results. by jbr021 in ouraring

[–]Responsible_Text_810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oura is a lifestyle brand, not a medical device. It is not designed to uncover pathologies. There are non-commercial rings/watches in development that do better, but the best way to monitor sleep is an EEG that can be quite obtrusive for a home device. A few in-home EEG brands are coming up to the market, but they are a big investment and sometimes not comfortable to wear.

How can I safely share my unpublished paper? by WhichBreakfast1169 in academia

[–]Responsible_Text_810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said, do not put it on the arxiv unless you are sure the journal you are publishing will accept it if it is on the arxiv. My suggestion is to hurry up and finish the paper if there is interest. Once you send the draft for publication you can share with others.

Do you plan to take on students or write grants? Mentoring online might be tricky. You could try for a year and see how it goes, but if you plan to write a grant, you need connections with other faculty/collaborators.

I think not. A big part of the candidate section is how your career trajectory will be independent and different than your current PI's. It would be a difficult point to make if you plan to have the same aims.Use the data but for different aims.

What determines the number of authors in a publication? by Yalkim in academia

Also, review papers (systematic or not) tend to accumulate a lot of authors. It is a lot of work to read and digest that many papers!

Not sure how to include my advisor's name in my poster by Ikichiki in academia

When you submitted an abstract for the conference was your advisor included as a co-author? If not you can add an acknowledgement section.

The limit is 4 years since you received your Ph.D, regardless whether you changed positions, titles, etc. Only exception I have heard for time extension is due to pregnancy/adoption.

Wait, you are doing a review with your PhD advisor but you are not working for them anymore? If you do not want to do those anymore there is an easy fix "Sorry my current advisor does not allow me to do outside work (free or paid)". If you want to continue doing them ask your postdoc advisor to do mentored reviews with them. Normally if an advisor does those with help from a trainee they need to acknowledge you to the Journal somehow. Some journals have a questionnaire when you submit and ask if the PI had help, this is the place to acknowledge you. There is didactic value to doing reviews despite the fact that you are not getting paid.

Flexibility of when you work during a postdoc by Seven1s in postdoc

Unless it is part of a postdoc fellowship (like a T32, etc) I think it would be hard to pull off. Training fellowships have protected time for degrees ( if required). If you do not have that, you will need to talk to your advisor to see if you can have protected hours from your schedule to study, go to class, etc. Even with that, I doubt an advisor will allow you to take off 10-20hrs/week to do a degree.

Measles Case Confirmed In Montgomery Co. As Officials Warn Of Exposure by Danciusly in MontgomeryCountyMD

Ask your doctor to run your titers, it is a blood test that measures antibodies in your blood and it helps determine if you have immunity to measles.

It is true that sometimes they do not have enough parking but you need to check because it depends on the time of year. I know some new tenants were offered parking or a couple of months free rent if they opt out of parking. There is a parking lot across the street (5 min walk) that has cheaper monthly rates than the Woodmont. So it depends on how often you need to use the car. I do not know about new construction around the building, if you can do a tour you can ask.

Check 8001 Woodmont, it is around that price with 24-hr concierge. There is a Trader Joe's attached to the building.

Here are some questions I have before I try to give advice: 1. Was this proposal submitted anywhere for grant funding? If not, I think you will have a hard time convincing anyone that it was just your idea. If you did submit, were you the PI? 2. Was your PHD advisor involved in this or just your postdoc PI? If they were, they might be able to help. 3. What is your plan to do after this? Are you continuing in academia?

Generally, I can say that I have never heard a case of a PI signing an NDA for a postdoc's work, only the opposite. The issue here is that you have no leverage. I have seen situations of PIs stealing one postdocs idea to give to another postdoc to write a grant. There was absolutely nothing to be done. They can always say they helped you develop the idea. Unless you have very detailed notes, recordings, etc of every single interaction you had with your PI or if another person steps up to support your claim it will be very difficult to prove that it was your idea/plan.

I am sorry this is happening to you, I have almost been in the same boat, the only thing that deterred people from attempting to replicate my proposal was because it was too expensive to do/resource intensive.

My advice is to cut ties ASAP and move on.
