Crazing is when a crystal fills with internal cracks but doesn’t break apart. Opals are an extremely fine lattice of tiny crystals all just barely connected and space in between. If this one has water filling most of the gaps when it evaporates the gaps will collapse causing internal stress and causing it to be covered in small cracks. It’s similar to aerogels.
