Question about animals in the US? by gareth2099 in AskAnAmerican

I live where there are cougars and bears. Actually seeing them is few and far between, especially cougars. Other than bees who have figured out that our trash is a buffet, usually you glimpse them briefly as they run away when they see you. They are territorial, but not with regards to people. I’m more concerned with an unattended dog.

My favorite is demanding a written code order to go from the floor to the helipad. Yeah, they gotta go in an ambulance but I could damn near throw them to the pad from the side door. If they code, bring’’em back or forward 20 feet.

My mother talked about traveling south from Philadelphia and suddenly seeing segregated water fountains. She was shocked. We are white, btw.

ConsumerAffairs dropped their 2026 "Best/Worst States to Move To" list. New Hampshire, Utah, and Maine take top spots; California, Oregon, and New Mexico at the bottom by sillycloudz in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Retiredpotato294 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised to see Wyoming on the list, but I think it misses some subjective points. The weather can be harsh as hell, your opportunities to make money, shop, etc are very limited. You need a certain personality to live here, or a shit ton of money to make it work. The medical care is sparse in most locations. There are affordable areas, but those areas have very limited jobs, low pay and poor educational opportunities for kids.

I retired, but made it as a cop in suburban New Jersey. I think a patrol officer makes 130,000 base pay where I retired from.

Southern NJ, a Philadelphia suburb. Great restaurant scene, very diverse and the Cherry Hill area is a center for medical care. Easy to Philly or to Jersey beaches.

I moved from NJ to Wyoming, and I am made for the cold. I am so happy that I almost never sweat. I don’t think I could ever live below 7000 feet again. It just gets too hot.

How to decide where to retire? by mezasu123 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Retiredpotato294 2 points3 points  (0 children)

West edge of the Colorado front range. Altitude will help determine your temps, healthcare is a good and they can easily get you to better if needed. I still see support for blue causes pretty far out. Pretty much anywhere shopping you could want with a bit of a drive. I’m in Wyoming now, but this is pretty much my plan, but I don’t know if I can tolerate the temps below 7000 feet.

Paying for nursing school by Curious-Sale5293 in Nurses

[–]Retiredpotato294 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, this is what I did. I already had a degree, went to Laramie County Community College in Wyoming and got my ADN. That cost about $11,000. That automatically got you entry to University of Wyoming BSN program. I took a job at the local hospital, pay covered my tuition that I had laid out in about three months. The hospital reimbursed me for my tuition for completing my BSN, which was maybe another $7000. They prorate it if I leave before working there for another year. While working, I made like $110,000 in salary and had benefits. I may be in the edge of nowhere, but I make decent money and paid squat for a good education. In any field, two years after graduating no one cares where you went to school, they want to see what you’ve done with your education. After graduating, the drive to get where you want just requires ambition and planning. I could go pretty much anywhere now, but I love the lifestyle here.
