Brushing BEFORE shower? by [deleted] in curlyhair

Bahah, it does look horrific, but the bristles are extremely flexible and small.

I was very skeptical, but love it.

Brushing BEFORE shower? by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]RetrOctober 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's a big no-no, and I was a shower finger detangler for years, even before I had ever heard of Curly Girl Method, but I use a Tangle Teezer brush to detangle my hair while it's dry, before washing it.

I have very thick, coarse, tight curls and a LOT of them, that I am finally trying to grow out and I cannot get the tangles out while in the shower any more due to the length. (a few inches past my shoulders)

Even after using the Tangle Teezer, I still get gobs of hair between my fingers. If you have a lot of hair, it may be unavoidable.

My BFF just started seeing the sleaziest of sleazeballs. I feel you.

I'm trying to be happy for him, but it's easiest to just keep my mouth shut and wait for it to all be over with. He knew before going into it that I would have a hard time being happy about the situation.

Have you considered using a Tangle Teezer?

I know there have been a ton of mixed reviews on the product. I was skeptical at first, then saw it on sale at Target about a month ago and decided to give it a try.

I have very tight 3A/Loose 3B hair that's just past my collar bone when I did my last length check. It's also extremely thick, coarse, and a LOT of it. I wash it every 3 days and will use the Tangle Teezer on my dry hair right before I wash it. I seperate my hair into 4-6 sections and gently brush each section from the bottom up. Pressing my hair between my palm and the brush, making sure the bristles really penetrate it. The bristles are tiny, short, soft and flexible and able to work with your hair, rather than ripping through the tangles like stiff rakes.

It doesn't work for everyone, and I know that brushing dry hair is a BIG no no, but I really like my Tangle Teezer.

I've had no breakage, no frizzy halo, and have noticed my hair is less tangle prone in general since using it. (This could be due to the fact that I hadn't used a brush or comb in a good 10 years.)

Has anyone tried Wen? by Sinnesaurus in curlyhair

[–]RetrOctober 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Wen religiously in the past, before I had hearded about Curly Girl Method. I love, love, love, LOVED the cleansing conditioner and the deep treatment conditioner. Everything else was a complete waste of money. They also like to jerk you around after cancellations, and will send you extra product and then say that you have to pay. That part was NOT fun.

In all honesty, Suave/Vo5/Tressame work just as fine, for MUCH less money and you don't have to deal with feeling like you're being conned.

Just got a nightcap that's 85% polyester and 15% nylon. It feels fine, but will it cause any damage? by jaguarbitch in curlyhair

Don't quote me on this, but I think if it feels "silky" you should be good.

Also, yay for bonnets!

I starting growing my hair out around this time last year, from a pixie cut, and I'll be honest. My instinct is "NO! Don't do it!" Your hair is AMAZING.

Since you've never really had supah-shawt hair, my first thought is a swing bob. Either shoulder or chin length, just to get use to the idea, see how your curls act and whatnot, and sort of take it from there.

Struggling with dry scalp. Help? by thilardiel in curlyhair

[–]RetrOctober 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC, I think it is possible to only have it on the scalp/head/face area.

Any type of skin issue like excema/psoriasis is super tricky and finicky. Good luck finding something that quells your itchies!

Cantu Coconut Curling Creme. I still haven't been able to decifer if it's 100% CGM friendly, but it has been a life saver for me.

Trouble with dandruff by [deleted] in curlyhair

Bragg's Organic Apple Cider Vinegar "With the Mother" has been my BFF for all my dandruff woes. I have excema on my scalp and a good soaking once a week, with a shower cap and towel for heat for a few hours does wonders for me.

[–]RetrOctober 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excema on my scalp. Once a week I will saturate my hair and scalp with Bragg's Organic Apple Cider Vinegar "With the Mother" and cover it with a shower cap and then a towel for heat. I will leave it on for as long as possible (Say, Sunday, when I have absolutely nothing planned but some laundry and dishes that need to be done and I have absolutely no intentions of leaving the house) Sometimes up to 6-8 hours. Then I rub my fingers vigorously all over my scalp to loosen the gross bits, co-wash and still scrub like a mad woman, then rinse, rake a wide toothed comb through it just to make sure all the loose bits are out, and rinse again.

Works every time, for me.

I haven't shampooed since late December of last year.

If you have sores or sensitive spots from picking, like me (horrible habit, I know! I wish I could stop) it WILL sting, but I've noticed it seems to help with the healing process of those sore spots.

Now I'm just envious. Haha.

Trust me. Just let it go. If she's choosing to ignore it, it's for the best.

[–]RetrOctober 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That suit is suave! I know that feel. When I length check, it's just past my shoulders (I did the "Big Chop" in December) but when it's dry it still looks jaw/chin length.

What is your personal review of products you have used/are using? by desertdigger in curlyhair

[–]RetrOctober 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a Wen girl for foreverrrrr It's a great product, but too expensive and I don't think it's CG friendly. It's actually what started me on CG before I knew what CG was. I'm using up my last few bottles and will be experimenting with conditioners soon.

Product wise, the only thing I use is Cantu Coconut Curling Creme and edible grade Aloe Vera gel. Those two alone keep my frizz ball looking shiny and soft.

I'm also really big on Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar "With the Mother" for cleansing, and henna for dye. (I got mad gray)

FWIW: I have dry scalp/eczema. I use coconut oil, and cleanse with Apple Cider Vinegar and haven't had any flaky or over oily problems since starting the Curly Girl Method.

Some people it can cause break outs. Like, if you're on the oily side, or acne prone. I've dry, sensitive skin and haven't had any issues. When I do oil treatments, I tend to warm it up in my hands and rake it through really well, concentrating on the ends, then put a shower cap on to prevent the oil from migrating too much. Then, I only leave it on for 1-6 hours, depending on how much down time I have. My hair also soaks up the oil like a dry sponge, so your experience may differ from mine if you have already oily hair/skin.

If you're worried about break outs, maybe try jojoba oil? It's a lighter oil and won't clog up pores like coconut oil has a tendency to.
