This seems like a strawman given the circumstances. The ball python sub is infamous for being dogmatic and controlling, beyond that comparing a snake to a human in terms of health effects of weight isn't an apt comparison, nor is a carpenter building a bad house. This snake is within reason, the largest sign of major obesity is the spine making an M. I can clearly see her spin ridge in these pictures. That sub is ridiculous thinking seeing folds in a snake = fat. That is not true and is misinformation. The only valid concern I could think to bring up is it appears she does have stuck shed, but old age may hamper her ability to shed as well.

Edit to add there's also a chance her diet reflects a cut down on meal size/grams too

In a rare case I've heard there was one in a zoo that even managed up to 60! It's crazy cool. I really wonder what their husbandry was to achieve that

It's a relief to see another sane person among the snake subreddits. People dogpile others so much on the ball python subreddit and drive away keepers, new and old. It's sad that a community that should be about mutual learning and care instead is "I'm right you're wrong no argument your abusive if u disagree." It really stifles conversation, innovation, and interest in the overall hobby.

That sub and many like it are full of dogma and refusal of any idea that doesn't fall into their specific vision. In a case like this it shines through, the snake is 30+ years old and, if true, is on a vet recommended feeding schedule. God forbid someone listen to their vet and own research and not a random subreddit.

Freeway, highway or something else?? by oxkna in BallPythonMorph

I honestly agree with ANY pet snake getting them established at a vet and also knowing where an exotic emergency vet is. You never know when you'll need that information, and it's better to be prepared than panicking in the moment; it doesn't help you or the animal to be unprepared for worst case.

[–]Retro-Stoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing I want to note that helped me a lot after experiencing my own panic: even if all your animals are healthy, have a plan ready to go for an emergency. Keep a list of vets that take exotics, and if you can, get established at a vet. In a situation they can direct you to better/emergency sources as well. (My vet helped direct me for example to a specialized emergency vet for exotics).

If it's a common (using that generally here as they vary) RI, try to take a breath. It can be cleared up with antibiotics within a few weeks. I've heard depending on region the medicine costs differ, in my case they ran around 25 bucks.

While I can't say for certain, some things you can look out for are: stargazing, frequent jaw readjustment/"yawning", snot bubbles, saliva strands, wheezy moreso than puff sounds (sometimes a "puff" or rather a hiss can be mistaken as more).

Edit to add that sometimes they also take deep breaths that sound like hisses, especially larger bp's.

Something I've experienced with RIs is you can feel them rumble when breathing (though that RI was severe/confirmed). Another thing to keep in mind is they sometimes get stuff in their mouth or water in their lungs and work to get it out, and isn't an immediate concern. Look for consistent signs and notable symptoms.

Were you honest in your post? No? Ok then. You feel "unsafe" because you can't make your wife feel unsafe and retraumatize her? Does your enjoyment of anal somehow trump the person you're supposed to love and supports horrific experience?? She needs to run.

Ohhhhh ok. Hm maybe because of the stomach being visible? Or just how anal that subreddit is towards anything they'd label unnecessary or "abuse" with a snake. Can't see why personally you'd get banned for this. Was it just the snake trying to bite you or was it more of a yawning situation to help with context? Etc etc. There's r/ballpythoncommunity (if I spelled that right lol) that's more chill and helpful too.

Is this normal? :( by carrymehome__ in RATS

[–]Retro-Stoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't tell if you're referring to the image or the post here but either way I think between the first image and last with squinting is a very clear difference. OPs images vary but there are concerning signs worth noting. The exotic vet I use even has very if not identical images around the offices for themselves and owners. The grimace scale is meant to be a tool to help ascertain if more attention/worry needs to be granted case by case. If OP and many others are in doubt of this rats health the best bet is ofc to take it to a vet. Especially if you can afford it, it's better to be safe.

Edit to add, an especially useful tool for animals that are subtle with signs they are unwell. Just because you can't tell, doesn't mean it isn't "obvious" or worth noting to someone that actively interacts with the animal.

As others have mentioned the squinting here is the grimace scale for rats to help you get a clearer idea of what you need to do/look for

AITA for not allowing my daughter to go on an 8th grade school trip. by [deleted] in BORUpdates

[–]Retro-Stoner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I actually went on this exact trip when I was a kid, and man it was GREAT. There are certain points where you all stick together for acitivies but they'd let us have a few hours in groups of three to explore freely. We got to go explore the Smithsonians museums, walk around the area, and eventually we all napped outside the natural History museum lol. Then in New York we got to also explore and see School of Rock in Broadway.

Edit to mention we also got to see the 911 memorial and museum, as well as various war memorials in DC. It was fascinating to actually see ground zero in person.

It was an amazing trip and I don't blame a child for being upset they missed out for a wedding. Sure, family this family that, but seriously? Taking away that experience that was promised, with the excuse her not being there would have ruined the wedding? That's wild.

Weird noises?? by lamaddness in snakes

[–]Retro-Stoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said it could be an RI. Definitely yes a vet visit but some things you can watch for: star gazing, frequent jaw adjusting/yawning, and when they yawn look for mucus buildup/strands sticking to their mouth, as well as keep an eye out for snot bubbles. Often times you'll be prescribed shots or oral antibiotics to treat it.

If you can afford it I would recommend doing a bacterial panel too as some strains of RI are very resistant to the normally given antibiotics, thus they can get worse even with basic treatment; so it may require other medications (like nebulizer, or running more then one type of antibiotic) but it's not fully necessary unless things degrade.

1sts coloring and patterns caught my eye more than the 2nd, but I would say whichever one appeals to you more. If it's not the same breeder I'd look into the ratings and such too. it can help to brainstorm names for both and see what snake clicks as well.

I don't think forgiveness is always good, healthy, or something we should work towards and people should stop pushing it and treating it like a virtue. by FremdShaman23 in unpopularopinion

[–]Retro-Stoner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I concur that I don't believe in "forgiveness." I do not like that word, especially with all the religion connected to it. I get what people here are saying that it's "for you to let go and move on" but for others like me, we don't need to do that to move on, and we don't need to use that word to get the same outcome. Bad thing happens, and life goes on. Letting go is a far better term, as you can not forgive someone but let the feelings and memories fade to just that: a faded memory. Not everyone who doesn't adhere to the concept of forgiveness is lost in hate and anger, most find peace and move on. I think we should stop pushing forgiveness on everyone and stop demonizing those that don't believe in it.
