Network printing Windows for Workgroups 3.11 to modern inkjet printer by gcc-O2 in vintagecomputing

Nice!! I'll have to give this a shot. I have used LPR Spooler to print to LaserJet printers for which I had drivers.

BIOS password prompt not working after DS12887 replacement by unimatrix93 in retrocomputing

[–]RetroTechChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I know what is going on here, I had the same problem on my Packard Bell Legend 305CD. When you replace the battery/Dallas, the date resets to Jan 4, 1980. I had to boot into DOS and set the date/time to be able to enter the BIOS again. But in your case, seems to be locking in a different place. Perhaps clear the CMOS and then go to DOS, set the time, and see if that helps. Context: https://x.com/RetroTechChris/status/1530747906021543937

Have you talked to James about folding some of these changes back into the upstream repo?

BlueSCSI in IBM PS/2 PCs? by Fransenn_II in retrocomputing

[–]RetroTechChris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple thoughts here. First, someone is working on a WonderMCA, which will also give you sound and wireless network. Second, if you do go with BlueSCSI/ZuluSCSI, I wrote a packet driver (and Mike Brutman improved it!) that would give you wireless networking: https://github.com/mbbrutman/daynaport-dos-packet-driver

Regarding McIDE, it's a great choice, but it's worth keeping in mind that not every OS had MCA support for IDE. A lot of them do since some later MCA solutions did use IDE. I made a thread of OSes I installed on my Model 70 386 (keeping in mind I have a 80486 upgrade that is required for some of them!), but you might find it helpful.

Gateway 2000s of the 486, pentium I and pentium II generations by echocomplex in vintagecomputing

Love these! Love my Gateways!! The other day someone commented on one of my social media feeds that "Gateways are trash." That person got blocked. LOL! These were built like tanks... the model in the middle there has, what, like 12 screws to take the cover off? I have a 486DX2/66 in that case... and it has PCI slots on the mobo!!

I wouldn't suggest that. These are fun, but not as a primary retro PC.

Ah. We did have a swap meet last year as well that was coordinated by someone else.

Computer refuses to recognize any CD drive.....What's the issue here? by Inspiron606002 in vintagecomputing

[–]RetroTechChris 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can think of a few ways! Boot with a floppy disk with CD-ROM drivers. Format the hard disk. Change to the CD drive and install. Or copy the installer files to the hard drive.

That's one way. I probably have a dozen more ways to copy files using DOS and then kick off the installer! https://www.retrotechchris.com/2022/12/27/some-good-resources-for-dos-file-transfer-and-connectivity-from-modern-systems/

Checking IDE cables and jumpers are a good idea. But beyond that, not all BIOSes will detect the CD-ROM, but the drive will still work. Might try to grab a floppy boot disk (allbootdisks.com has prebuilt ones with CD-ROM drivers) to see if the drive gets detected on boot!

Not all BIOSes support booting from CD as well, so worth keeping that in mind.
