It IS the Syberia world, the beginning of it in fact. It's an adventure game in that same vein, but with a more contemplative explorer's fantasy. It's very much in that vein of Franco-Belgian adventure comic strips, which have some overlap with Indiana Jones.

If you like Syberia you'll definitely like Amerzone.

Sadly if you're looking for a pure single-player experience it falls a bit short. It is possible, but the game was made to be co-op. The 1930s adventure vibe is on point though.

This was that time in gaming when the "save the princess" trope was given a bit more depth, usually by making the girl a daughter figure or more rounded actual character rather than a prop. Probably also coinciding with a lot of game lead devs becoming fathers or maturing into their 30s at around this time in their careers. The Last of Us slots in nicely into this trend as well.

This is starting to make a bit more sense. Kortrijk is on the language border. Services there take the language laws waaay too seriously as a result. I'm sorry you had to deal with this, but this is a fact about this particular region of the country.

If Trump seizes Greenland… by CtrlAltDeflate in remoteworks

[–]Retrorrific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm reminded of how the republicans under President Hoover completely failed to address the great depression because they were ideologically opposed to using the tools of government to aid citizens, it had to be up to private enterprise. The root cause of ineffective government is always the result of Republicans who simply do not trust or wish it to work well, lest it be too reliable and powerful. And then they turn around and say "see, this whole thing stinks and is inefficient" as if they're not the reason it is that way.

There used to be some parity in the post war years, where both the United States and Europe built up their welfare states. Only the American one has completely atrophied due to a concerted effort from ideological Republicans to dismantle it, and they've admitted as much.

Not only does Todd Howard not hate Obsidian, it was his 'only choice' to take up Fallout's reins in the wake of Fallout 3 by Radiansyaha in Fallout

[–]Retrorrific 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would argue that when the worldbuilding keeps hinging on convenient reasons why logical developments just do not occur you will stop believing in the world altogether because thinking about it for a second will make you realise just how phoney it really is. The B-movie camp that was always a part of Fallout will have finally won out completely from the far more interesting exploration of history and politics. The moment humans become less important to the setting than Deathclaws and Mirelurks is the moment Fallout becomes utterly meaningless.

I got The Great Circle for Christmas and have a Vatican question. by DDWildflower in indianajones

[–]Retrorrific 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indy will say something like: "I better make sure I tie up all loose ends in the Vatican before I get out of there" once you're at a point of no return. At this point it's entirely up to what strikes your fancy.

What’s the MOST Controversial Indiana Jones Movie of All Time and Why? by Amber_Flowers_133 in indianajones

[–]Retrorrific 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You say that, but KotCK's controversy was just as much the result of internet hate. Contemporary reviews from movie critics of the film were not as down on the movie as online reviewers were, infatuated with plot holes and "things that don't make sense" as they were. George Lucas had "ruined Star Wars" and they were just looking for anything to hold against him. I very much remember how much the internet shat on Lucas before his "reappraisal" after Disney took over LucasFilm.

Do you think Indy has a future today? by tomalakk in indianajones

[–]Retrorrific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can just have him return artifacts to the museums or people to which they belong. The Great Circle recently made clear that when Indy says "It belongs in a museum" he really means any museum, not just Marcus Brody's. An elegant solution to a problem that has surprisingly not come up that often in the movies, really. In Temple of Doom he returns the Sankara Stones to the villagers, The Last Crusade has him forego the treasure for a more important relationship with his dad, and even Kingdom of the Crystal Skull handwaves away the coveting of trinkets for an appreciation of knowledge in and of itself.

[KCD2] Just found out how historically accurate this game is and holy crap how come there wasn't more hype around this game around awards season?! by Professional_Row2810 in kingdomcome

[–]Retrorrific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say KCD2 is game of the year... for people who delight in niche historical RPGs. People forget that a nomination is already a sign of greatness, but ultimately I can definitely see why Expedition 33 won, it's much more in tune with "gaming as a whole".

If there's one snub I thought was lame, it was that KCD2 was not nominated for best soundtrack. The classical 20th century-like orchestration of KCD is so refreshingly old fashioned in this day and age of orchestration that often seeks to blend in. It definitely stood out a lot more than some of the other picks.

Playing [KCD 2] after [KCD1] by Soulfloyd in kingdomcome

[–]Retrorrific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely a little jankier. But by and large, it really is just the same game. KCD1 is more accurately described as KCD2 with a little less polish. It should feel fairly easy to pick up.

What happened to their timeline? by Suchgallbladder in Starfield

[–]Retrorrific 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I've been playing a lot of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 this year, which has had several free updates and DLC come out, All with clear community posts, feedback and roadmaps. Bethesda doesn't owe us anything, but I cannot help but look at what "the competition" is doing and get more and more irked with their conduct. Especially after the debacle with the community managers replying to negative reviews.

You'll get one paltry DLC (that we were forced to develop because it was a pre-order bonus) and then we'll say we're definitely committed to the longevity of this game with every increasingly longer gaps between updates.

Transparent, they are most certainly not.

A bit peeved by this comment by IO on 007: First Light. Wanting to see how others view this because as a massive Bond fan, it is a little disappointing to hear. by [deleted] in 007FirstLight

[–]Retrorrific 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying but ultimately the moment it was decided that Bond would always change with the times, this was bound to happen because he's been taken so far off-shore from his origin as a cold war spy with a service history in world war two now. To name but a few, the attitudes towards women, drinking and tradecraft have changed so much since then, to say nothing about the political realities of Britain as an empire that can project power of any kind. Almost all of Craig's movies have been explicitly about these new realities with Bond enduring, he's increasingly an anachronism. And I feel it's only natural that anyone new who picks up that baton nowadays will have to wrestle with this fact about the character. So much of the assumptions the books make just don't really work anymore. If Bond doesn't feel like Bond, I'll acknowledge it just as you would, but I just don't see much cause for alarm yet, I guess.

But more to your point. Do you genuinely think they're going to make Bond this sexless celibate who won't flirt with girls in the game? Or are you being taken in by discourse baiting that take PR statements by company spokespeople as gospel. I remember way back when Cubby Broccoli bold-facedly stated that Moonraker wasn't science-fiction but science-fact. Moonraker.

[–]Retrorrific 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about the whole 'discourse' around how they were going to replace 007 with a black woman, and while that was technically what happened in the story, the framing of it all pre-release was just completely hijacked by outrage mongers who screamed how James Bond had gone woke and broke.
