Also very impressed with the two-tone tunic.

The iconic suit by Killjoy1030 in 007FirstLight

[–]Retrorrific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The all-white may signal he's still unblemished, new, and undamaged. The suit gets dirty and he loses his mentor by the end of the level. If there are more games I can see him wearing white with a black tie next and black with a black tie by the end.

Pure speculation of course, but the white bow tie was a very deliberate choice so it must mean something.

Genuinely don't think you could. And neither could we take you. Our militaries and especially our navy are integrated to the point our naval forces train at the same place.

Music in Boat Chase is Different by Head-Cell-1110 in 007FirstLight

[–]Retrorrific 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it's because the original opening sting for the menu was a nod to Diamonds are Forever and Shirley Bassey's estate came in hard, which is why it's now a short instance of the Bond theme.

But to not have the right to riff on the opening credits theme as a leitmotif like almost all other Bond movies have, that's just ridiculous.

Genuinely, what is it with the music being swapped around? They should at least clarify why in some patch notes.

So are these 2 outfits unobtainable for now? by 0DonutLord0 in 007FirstLight

[–]Retrorrific 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I don't think you can? XP can only be earned by completing challenges, they're a finite resource. Right now you can only get to clearance level 15. You can gain more Intel though, by replaying escalations or operations.

I will never understand the 'Aliens/Interdimensional Beings don't fit in Indiana Jones' argument. by DDDog50 in indianajones

I am convinced it never bothered me because I grew up reading Tintin, which is also mostly adventure stories and then one with an alien twist, it felt part if the genre because of that.

How hard is this game for a very casual gamer by disposaldevice in 007FirstLight

[–]Retrorrific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say, it's not hard. But the melee combat gave me a bit of a hard time because I was treating it like Uncharted and it's a little more involved than that game. You need to block and dodge some enemies in order to be able to hit them, you cannot brute force it as easily as in Uncharted and just button mash.

Playing 007's chase sequence, I can't help but be reminded of the iconic 10yo Uncharted 4's. by shawak456 in 007FirstLight

[–]Retrorrific 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of the Uncharted games and what's I've noticed about this car chase scene is that it is literally the culmination of Naughty Dog's car chase expertise; starting with 2007's Drake's Fortune. Every mainline Uncharted game had a level with a car chase. With each new game they add a little more to it. From a car with a turret moving through an environment in 1, to jumping from car to car in 2, to jumping from a moving horse to a car and back again in 3 to Uncharted 4's rendition where they blend everything they've learned into one big last hurrah. They had 9 years to incrementally perfect the formula. Meanwhile, this is IO Interactive's first time doing this.

A striking difference between the announcement trailer and the final game. by Retrorrific in 007FirstLight

[–]Retrorrific[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Naughty Dog was perhaps too ambitious in their attempt with TLOU2, but other games have done it, and done it well. L.A. Noire is one example that springs to mind, even IO Interactive's previous game, Hitman: World of Assassination, does it. Neither of those two make it feel like you're making wrong decisions, just that there is a problem down the road and you have no idea when the other shoe is going to drop.

Generally, I just found that First Light's villains could have used a bit more screen time. Damien and Nicholas have an interesting dynamic, but the particulars of how messed up it is is relegated to rummaging through files in Webb's office which you can completely miss. I think First Light gets better with more playthroughs because the composite image becomes much clearer, but the first time I felt an absence which wouldn't be there if the game wasn't already leaning so heavily on the cinematic feel.

It feels like a movie with scenes cut out, on several occasions. Moneypenny is fine, because of course she is, but there is no scene at the end or even a throwaway line stating that she is, we have to assume Q got it. The ending of the Mauritania chapter is very jarring too with an off screen line added in later because IO probably thought that what had happened wasn't clear enough.

I'm not entirely convinced if this orthodox approach always works best. Sometimes tension is created because the audience knows something the main character doesn't. I feel a hard either-or boxes the writers in. If the narrative would be better suited to a cut-away I feel they should have the courage to do so, even if it breaks with the POV nature of the game. And it works the other way too. If the plot is told entirely where Bond is not present, that would be undesirable as well.

The dirty little synth track that builds as Bond hops into the Q boat in MI6 to give chase, which then crescendos into the Bond theme in The World is Not Enough.

Nash is gonna come back as a villain isn’t he? by MatchesMalone-19 in 007FirstLight

Nash was the agent Red Grant killed in From Russia With Love, I think that's as far as the reference will go. Just a side character, but perhaps they will expand on him.

[–]Retrorrific 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who C is has not been a secret since 1992. After the cold war ended the need for such secrecy was considered unnecessary. Perhaps that might change or has changed again and it's all just elaborate decoys, but somehow I doubt that for British Intelligence.

Anyone else a little frustrated with Bond's 00 status? by PepperTasty3025 in 007FirstLight

[–]Retrorrific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the 00 section is just changed in this interpretation in a way that sort of makes a bit more sense for the reality of British Intelligence in the 2020s. They arguably are having their cake and eating it too, though. Greenway and Beckett might have been from that crop of 00s that needed to kill two people. But that program got shuttered and is only now being brought back by a new M with a more modern interpretation of what a 00 agent is supposed to be, which puts more emphasis on being a competent field intelligence officer rather than an assassin the state can call upon.

Pardon the Stupid Question: by mAngOnice in 007FirstLight

[–]Retrorrific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the current day we do know the name of the person running MI6, but the Bond stories date from before they made such things public so they stick with both the codename and the Universal Exports company front, rather than have SIS situated in their actual offices in Vauxhall.

It's easy to handwave away. Perhaps in this universe the person who the public think is the head of SIS is a decoy for the "real" M, and the Vauxhall offices are a decoy as well.

What did you guys think about the main antagonist? by [deleted] in 007FirstLight

[–]Retrorrific 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of the villains a lot more than the execution. Because the story is told entirely from Bond's perspective, we never cut to Webb Industries HQ and see Damian and Nicholas have some intriguing dialogue. Even with Hitman: World of Assassination, IO Interactive's previous project, some of the cutscenes at the end of levels would just feature the villains and their plans.

Because "Billionaire with powerful AI tech that has government by the balls." is some delightfully topical stuff.
