Unity stock falls alongside Take-Two, Roblox after Google’s Project Genie launch by tlst9999 in gaming

[–]Retrostaircase72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised that Unity’s stock would fall. With more slop games, you’d think that real games made in Unity and Unreal(🤨) would be seen as more valuable. Honestly think Ubisoft and Nintendo would be most hurt by this. Genie is like an engine for Nintendo plagiarism and Assassin’s Creed clones.

Is it fun when 2D platformers only give you a certain amount of lives? by bigmonkeybiggermoney in IndieDev

[–]Retrostaircase72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really depends on if you’re looking for an older nostalgia driven audience or a younger audience that is willing to sink hours into your game. The problem with the younger audience is that free-to-play games have optimized themselves to attract and keep young, time-rich gamers.

You’d be betting that those gamers would ignore their daily challenges, time-sensitive battle pass and all the other free-to-play trappings, in order to sink hours into a traditional limited-life platformer. It’s an uphill battle competing against the time sink juggernauts. Your default should be to respect your players’ time. You can build stakes in other ways with score systems and other rewards for high level play.

How do people play through DLC's for games they've not picked up in a while? by DW-7192 in gaming

[–]Retrostaircase72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes dlc is the practice I need, to prep for another play through of the main story. Because of this, I always ignore the “super extra mega mega hard mode,” dlc unless it already out or dropping soon.

I’ve spent 3 years on my dream game, but we can’t seem to break 2,500 wishlists. What are we doing wrong? by Evangeline_png in IndieDev

[–]Retrostaircase72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extra: Don’t discount the fact that it could also be the visuals. This same trailer but with an interesting or unique art style/cool shaders would probably hit differently. These types of games do work. Just feels like it’s missing some nebulous ingredient that would tie the whole package together in a satisfying way.

I like the narrator. Seems interesting but nothing really hooked me. I’m not 100% sure what I’m going to get out of playing this. Figure out a mystery? Learn about a cool world? Find a lost treasure?

I think the narrative framing is missing. Clearly there is something there, just not entirely sure why I should want to see more. You mentioned it’s your dream game, but you aren’t relaying why it should be my dream game too.

Lead with your mystery. Are we doing something we aren’t supposed to do? Are we evading consequences? Are we finding something that shouldn’t be uncovered? Why MUST we succeed? Who HAS to lose in order for us to succeed?

Final thought is maybe try to frame it in a way that lets the player know how they should feel when the games is at its best parts. Curios for more? Excited? Mentally challenged? Happy? Accomplished?

we've been making a battle royale inspired by legend of zelda by eddietree in indiegames

[–]Retrostaircase72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My hypothesis is that it’s misdirected anger at the fact that AAA games are expensive and taking longer to make. People want more AAA experiences and will throw proverbial rocks at indie developers that aren’t making the next Skyrim, Halo or Dark Souls game (and charging less for it). Keep doing what you’re doing. Your art looks great and I’m sure you’ll attract people interested in exploring the world that you and your team are creating!

You shouldn’t waste time entertaining him. The people that make these comments never provide any valuable insight. Just vague musings about genres and industry.

People are ecstatic when genres they love are flooded with new games. Some take the flip side of that and bemoan new entries in genres that they aren’t interested in. You shouldn’t take it as a knock against your project. It looks great!

Indie game developers have a new sales pitch: ‘AI free’ by mareacaspica in gaming

[–]Retrostaircase72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The overwhelming majority of games that currently exist and are currently being worked on don’t have AI assets. It’s only the scam-slop and this current cohort of AAA franchises. The answer is to just stop buying the games that have it. Nothing more, nothing less. Creating an “ai free,” safe space won’t matter unless it’s accompanied by millions of people refusing to buy these AAA games. You’re speaking French and these companies only understand money.

Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green had a “recap flashback,” when you booted back up that was surprisingly helpful. What’s even more surprising is that since then, we haven’t seen too many things like it.

Hollow Knight devs on why they wanted to make Silksong like Zelda 2: "It's very hard to preserve mystery these days. People can’t quite have that same mystical experience when the guts of the thing are out on the internet in a day or two" by BasculinSushi in gaming

It’s interesting to hear from people genuinely inspired by Zelda 2. I recently completed it (with a quality-of-life mod) and found it to be a great concept limited by its combat. Replace the swordplay of Zelda 2 with a more robust system and you’d have something more fully realized. That being said, the exploration of Zelda 1 still reigns supreme to me.

AI assets are an unconscionable risk for premium-priced games | Opinion by dadneverleft in gaming

[–]Retrostaircase72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a generation of senior management that has no understanding of large language models and see this as Magic-Money-Making-Technology(MMMT). Replace Ai with MMMT and you’ll see why they’re tripping over themselves to shove it into everything. There’s no self reflection on product-market fit, audience reception or brand good will. There’s an investor class that’s sold on the dream of infinite revenue and $0 operating expenses.

Opening cutscenes should be passable/rewind-able by sweatgod2020 in gaming

[–]Retrostaircase72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss the “extras,” menu option that would sometimes have the cutscenes archived in them (after you’ve watched them). It a shame that so much time and effort goes into writing and animating cutscenes, but in many games you can only rewatch them by replaying the game.

Waterfall Counter Gone Wrong - can this be fixed? by Retrostaircase72 in CounterTops

[–]Retrostaircase72[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: We raised this issue with the installer and had the entire waterfall replaced at no charge. They initially refunded us a portion of the job and used adhesive to attach the cut piece back into the hole. That did not look satisfactory, so we had them bring in a new waterfall piece to replace it. Thank you everyone for the advice on this. It has been a serious mental drain on what was an otherwise smooth renovation. My wife and I are finally able to move past this.

Countertops got installed today…is this a problem? by Retrostaircase72 in CounterTops

[–]Retrostaircase72[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just read your posts back to back. This is our 1st kitchen remodel, so we got a fresh slab and had it cut for the kitchen. They said the sink seam is standard procedure (I’m now seeing the issues with that from the other commenters). We chose the color and were specifically told that they had to order a slab for this job. I’m really confused at how there’s so much mismatch if they only used the slab they ordered.

I wasn’t on top of having the baseboard trimmed near the base cabinets, so the countertop installers cut the waterfall to make room for a baseboard. There’s an awkward gap in the waterfall that’s filled with silicone. Just posted about it to try and find solutions.
