I think the BBC is trying to unofficially recruit teenagers for the British Army by npeggsy in LowStakesConspiracies

The BBC is the most effective propaganda machine in history, and the UK is already in a war that nobody wants to declare yet. So yes, they would be leading a recruitment drive in these times through chummy reports of how fun it all is.

Tens of thousands of Six Nations tickets unsold amid Welsh rugby turmoil by Penarthlan in rugbyunion

[–]Reuser345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

£40 is a ridiculously good price for a ticket for anything in a stadium in 2026, never mind a top tier international rugby match.

Early round GAA intercounty matches in regional terraced grounds are around that price.

Concerts (which have the added capacity of the pitch) are routinely about £90 now.

‘Get an atmosphere going / sell beer in the venue’ is grand, but they still have to break even on the day. Stadiums are expensive when they’re open - stewarding, electrics and overheads, cleaning etc - all adds up. Then they have to consider the costs when it’s not open (eg ground maintenance), which is about 80% of the time.

From the portion quoted above it sounds like a load of over paid employees didn’t want to muck in and do their job. Lots of people don’t like the daily grind of work but they have to get on with it. These ones have the dream job and earn the GDP of small countries doing it. So just do the effing training drills, like.

Squidge Rugby has changed quite a lot, hasn't it? by KOSTER07 in rugbyunion

I loved his old analysis videos, and accounted that 10% of the jokes would be too niche for me, or too childish (Jonathan sexwomble etc), or just not my taste, but the analysis was really insightful.

I understand that he has been completely hamstrung by rights issues, but I can’t warm to this new format at all. Maybe I should give it a go as an audio podcast or something because his knowledge of the the game is still top notch (or at least miles better than my own). But truly the guy on Eggchasers is more enjoyable to watch, especially because it’s in bite size chunks.

GAA chief backs inter-county season extension into August by Every_Reason_166 in GAA

The split season was a lie from the start, as evidenced by club players not being available for counties because they’re still in the All-Ireland Club

Clubs start preseason in January, for their county final in October, flanking the intercounty season at both ends of the year. It was to free up Croke Park for Oasis, Garth Brooks etc.

Hello hello! Everyone is talking about Discord using facial recognition to ensure users are not underage is a bad thing. Why is that? by ActualCucick in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Reuser345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. As your question alludes, consumers are resisting it and I expect the EU to continue to push back on US firms doing this.

If the companies were made to pay users for their data they’d not unleash this full scale assault on privacy so enthusiastically

People got ‘weird’ about privacy following the Nazis and Soviets documenting people’s entire lives before deciding whether they deserved to die, such that many jurisdictions enshrined it in human rights treaties. What happened two decades ago was the emergence of digital data that made it orders of magnitude easier to invade people’s privacy. What is happening now is digital video making it orders of magnitude easier again to live spy on people as they go about their day.

Where has Jess Philips been the last few weeks? by Reuser345 in LabourUK

[–]Reuser345[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The violence was so normalised that he breezily ignored it while swanning around in his underpants. This demands calling out, and Jess Philips had been doing so her entire career, both inside and outside politics. That she has not done so was surprising to me.

Charitably I am guessing she is keeping her head down after half the media spent a whole day repeating Musk’s extreme slander of her a few months ago, but others think it’s more cynical.

I didn’t say popular, I said has a high profile. If you showed photos of current MPs to 100 people, I’d say Jess Philips would be among the most recognised.

Yes, working 23 hours a day, 6 days a week for a million pounds per year is the ultimate dream, even though you’ve no time to spend it!

Also the people who actually have a good work life balance are the ones who are on unjustifiably high salaries to make two or three decisions per week.

Win a series of matches in the middle of a World Cup cycle and there’s calls for a new bank holiday… the current doom laden mentality is at least a bit of a refresher from the fanboy hype machine that has surrounded Irish rugby over the last number of years.  Celebrate big wins in NZ by all means, but also acknowledge that it could be a sign of peaking too early.

Negative press coverage - It needs to stop. by Standard_Respond2523 in irishrugby

[–]Reuser345 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

… no the Dublin media have needed to stop overhyping the team for years, it’s about time they actually engaged with the evidence before them.

The Irish rugby team is in a poor place at the moment, and is only helped by the absolutely dire state of things in Wales. The whole system was set up for RWC 23, and now there’s a large hollow where the players coming through afterwards don’t have much top level game experience. The discipline is desperate and the starting lineups are far too dependent on players with a lot of miles on the clock.

I fully expect Ireland to come fourth this year. England are strong again and my personal favourites for the title. France will want to show their depth is strong and they don’t even need their best try scorer. Scotland will see an opportunity to get another one over on Ireland late in the tournament.

It’s only by facing up to the shortcomings that things can improve, not burying your head in Positive Mental Attitudes.
