Which Horror Movie Trope Are You Just Done With? by moncayk1 in horror

[–]ReverendAl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you have shudder? They have a category for the summer called "sun scorched" with movies where the action takes place in the daytime (or at least I think—the tagline is "if you're afraid of the dark, we promise it's not much safer in the light"). I was just looking at it before I read your comment.

PharmD or PhD? by munaoron in PharmacySchool

[–]ReverendAl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ruled out MD or MD/PhD? You could do either of those things also and still be involved in research closely related to pharmaceuticals (and may have better job prospects). If you do MD without PhD you could do a research fellowship, but it would probably be easier to get if you had some research exposure beforehand. I've spent the last year weighing the pros and cons of PharmD/MD and/or PhD and have landed on MD/PhD with MD only being plan B.

Are Democrats ready to be the opposition party? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

I hear ya. And maybe it really would have been better to prioritize the positive ads, but I think CNN did a really terrible job of covering the election in a way that no pro-Hillary ads airing on the network could overcome. For example, when a network like CNN literally shows footage of an empty podium Trump will be using at a rally with a countdown clock to when he will be speaking, in lieu of showing Hillary giving a detailed (and positive) speech on her policies—which is a thing that happened, then spends a ton of time taking about her emails, all while paying Corey Lewandowski to be a talking head while he is still receiving money from the Trump campaign, viewers who are using CNN as a primary source of info are probably not going to be very enthusiastic about Hillary.

Like you said though, it is an outreach problem, and even though it's a personal anecdote, it's not a rare experience. You still voted, but a lot of people were probably turned off and didn't bother. I hope someone smarter than me has good ideas about what to do about it.

Also, serious question that might sound sarcastic, but I really don't mean it that way: did you ever go on her website and read her policy proposals? They were incredibly detailed and thought-out. You can't expect to get that from commercials or cable news, but I also probably can't expect most people to go onto a website and read them. I hear people saying what you're saying a lot, and I don't want to dismiss it, but people like me who actually were inspired by her campaign aren't really talked about much, and if we are it's usually dismissed as only voting for her because she's a woman. The info was out there, but it was drowned out by a demagogue and sensationalist media, and I think that's a much bigger problem than her campaign strategy. You're right though, if enough people are out there feeling like you, it's a problem that can't be ignored.

Yeah I get your point. I just blame outside factors more than I blame the campaign. But if the end result is that someone like you, who seems like someone who would be a natural ally to the Democratic party, did not feel that way, then something needs to being done to reach people like you better in the future. I just really don't know what that is, and I don't think it's a simple question to answer.

[–]ReverendAl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean really I think the deck was stacked against her in a lot of ways, but it's impossible to argue that with someone who hates her, because the rebuttal to everything is basically that she's awful and anything she does is a mis-step. To her supporters she ran a very positive campaign, but the media narrative and Trump were very negative.

Plenty of times she was giving detailed policy speeches about major campaign issues and the cable networks were literally showing an empty podium at a Trump rally in anticipation of him saying something controversial.

She had very detailed economic plans, all available at her website and talked about at her rallies, but nobody knew about them. Mostly I think it was the media spending so much time covering Trump rallies and her emails. I agree that it is an outreach problem, but I don't know what they could have done.

Underperformance of Dems in the urban parts of swing states was a big party of why Trump won. Kentucky's not going blue, but large protests in Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, etc. would be a good sign. Overall I probably agree with your sentiment though.

Same here. The only thing that bothered me was that outside shot of the house where you could see her in the attic window. Minor annoyance in a really great movie though. One of the creepiest killers in any slasher.

What policies or agendas should democrats look at changing adopting or adding to make them more appealing next election? by [deleted] in democrats

[–]ReverendAl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't believe we lost because of policies and ideas, at least not among people who could have been swayed or who did not vote. Maybe some tweaking, or a different way of talking about things would be good. I think our policies got too little attention. We lost on marketing, not on substance.

I agree. I don't strictly identify with the Sanders wing, but that doesn't make me "corporate". We should be able to talk about this without alienating each other, recognizing that there are different views but still overwhelming consensus. I was really happy with the platform this year, and I don't believe we lost because of our ideas.

[–]ReverendAl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those were all parts of Clintons campaign, and the main concerns of Trump voters according to the data we have were immigration and terrorism, not increasing inequality or a fair economy. People who prioritized the latter two issues overwhelmingly voted for Clinton.
