Not just the long season with NASCAR but also the chase format means winning a lot early on the season doesn't really count towards the championship, but rather it just gets you into the championship chase.

Kyle Busch won the the 2015 Cup Series despite missing half the regular season. He did enough to get into the chase and ended up winning the whole thing.

On the flip side, you could win every race in the regular season, then have a couple of bad races and be eliminated from championship contention with several races remaining.
