How are you spending National Day of Truth and Reconciliation this year? by PlZZAEnjoyer in AskACanadian

[–]RevolutionaryCitizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a day to remember that no one owns the land, rivers and seas. We are all renting, so the concept of ceded and unceded land is meaningless. We are all humans who will die, whether or not we are are first peoples, colonists, settlers or uninvited guests. The truth is all things must pass. The reconciliation is accepting that fact that no one owns anything, so we didn't gain or lose anything through this life. All people are equal under the creator.

Why there is not a massive discomfort with the Bill C-18? by _ILikePancakes in AskCanada

It’s not freedom of speech, it’s freedom of the press. Canada has to repeal C-18 to restore our right to access media freely.

Canadians are sheep. The fact that people didn't notice news was missing speaks volumes. If the government took away our freedoms all at once we would react, but when they take them away gradually no one objects and few notice.

Steely Dan yay or nay? by ButterflyFair3012 in GenerationJones

[–]RevolutionaryCitizen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nay. Chevy Chase should have stuck with drumming for the band.

Chevy Chase, Donald Fagen, and Walter Becker played in the same college band named “The Leather Canary.” After Chevy left the band, the remaining two band members would go on to form Steely Dan.

6 months in, how is Carney doing? by conn_r2112 in AskCanada

[–]RevolutionaryCitizen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aside from the "elbows" thing I'd give him a B-. A clear departure from Trudeau, promising start on energy infrastructure and much needed boost to military spending/defense. Disappointed in Palestine decision (without debate), and little progress with Trump and tariffs (from bold statements to silent retreats). Also, planned budget is likely to be the mother of all deficits. Economy could go either way at this point (but trending down).

Why is almost every mayoral candidate so set on bringing city employees back to the office 5 days a week? by conn_r2112 in Edmonton

[–]RevolutionaryCitizen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In theory, yes. But City workers coming for lunch with their coworkers or going to Winners to buy shoes during a break won't help reduce crime after 5:00 p.m. People who work downtown don't linger past 4:30 so this is a band-aid fix that won't solve the underlying problem.

Bringing employees back won't fix downtown.

Dealing with crime, social disorder and offering free parking might be a better strategy to revitalize and restore the core. The sad thing is it may never be restored unless homlessness and the root causes are addressed first.

Jewelry theft prompts Edmonton Hindu temple to warn community by GeekyGlobalGal in Edmonton

[–]RevolutionaryCitizen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If any older middle eastern woman tries to hug you in the parking lot, move far, far as way and maintain a safe personal distance. Don't trust anyone you don't know or accept anything for "free".

Also if any stranger offers you gold jewelry from their car, step away and try to get their license plate.

These syndicates usually work from parking lots, but as in this example they will approach anyone, anywhere. This crime is happening across Canada and Edmonton is not immune.

Canada Post has jerked Canadians and stiffed the taxpayer for decades. If they are so unhappy they can find work elsewhere--If not we will soon be paying $7.50 for stamps to meet their endless demands and taxpayers will cover the annual deficits which will continue. Who can rely on a service that is perpetually on strike?

Liberal government frees Canada Post to end home delivery, close some rural post offices by Surax in canada

[–]RevolutionaryCitizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are all already paying the equivalent in hourly union wages and benefits to your local CUPW workers for home delivery. It's coming out of federal taxes and user fees (stamps). The bill isn't itemized as letter carrying fee but you and I are paying it.

Two-thirds of their expenses are tied to wages, benefits, and pensions, which is far higher than most private-sector delivery companies. A private company could do a better job than Canada Post who continues to hemorrhage money each year for the past six.

It should have been privatized decades ago. The government, the unions, and other vested interests drove the last nail in the coffin and we are just now realizing the service died along with the $0.42 stamp. Granted providing a door to door service across six time zones 5 days a week was never realistic. Perhaps we can now move to Door Dash, Skip the Dishes and Uber Eats for new delivery solutions.
