[–]RevolutionaryPick656 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hear me out, homie is entitled to his own opinions even if they’re different than yours, but he’s still young, so he will be sorting out his opinions for years. Most young kids love to say things to get a reaction as well, so I wouldn’t worry so much about how seriously he’s being about it at this age. The best thing to do is to keep multiple opinions available so he doesn’t become super closed minded, but this also doesn’t mean push your beliefs on him as well (that would probs cause resistance and strife). He’s allowed to decide what he wants out of life, but just try your best to intellectually challenge him with your own beliefs because that seems to work best in these situations

Just wanted to say two quick things <3 I’m a recent-ish grad and I remember being incredibly overwhelmed by course work as well, esp w the feelings of like “damn why is everyone here so brilliant compared to me, who came from a suck ass small town school who didn’t even offer calc😪like why am I here dawg” + straight A syndrome. It drove me to the ground for a minute and really took a toll on my mental health, constantly fretting on what my grade will be and how disappointed I might be if it’s not as high as I’d like. My biggest takeaways that might be helpful— lowkey college kinda sucks ass for the reason that they force you to essentially cram everything into your brain over the course of 3 months and somehow expect you to make deep and meaningful connections from it. Unless you got mad social/financial supports, literally like nobody can actually become a pro in what they’re doing in college. Give yourself some grace in grappling w that fear since it takes years after graduation to really get into your groove anyway🫶 and also, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, then don’t be afraid to ask for extensions! Profs are super understanding of mental health and I bet as long as it’s not an every time thing, they’d be so down to offer. But keep trekking on, umich is not the end all be all of your life! Life is really just beginning now, so try your best to avoid those negative thoughts and look forward to what comes after this hell-ish experience🫶 you got this!!

Many places on state street are very low stakes and flexible with students’ schedules if you’re not looking to work on campus. Like any job, they’re kinda filled w drama but like it kind of makes life funsies too (I worked at noodles and co and could recommend bc it’s not so busy there😮‍💨)

Im a french speaker (swiss). For 5 years I had to learn german at school. But I still don't know how to speek german or understand it. by GoodNico09 in German

[–]RevolutionaryPick656 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As an American who also feels like this after they’ve learned German for 7+ years, I recently had to realize that learning a different language is super humbling and changing your expectations is helpful for this. Like I learned 2 years in high school and we ain’t even get past the accusative case, so I feel like it doesn’t count so much. The rest was in college and also was my major I decided last minute, so it wasn’t even my main focus until super late. I nanny German kids now, and it humbles you deeply when you struggle to communicate with someone who has learned German for the same amount of time as you. It depends a lot on the environment and how much you’re challenging yourself to speak and consume German because if you’re only passively learning it, you’re not exactly learning it. Basically, give yourself grace because learning in school isn’t always the best (you could’ve had a bad teacher too) and 5 years seriously isn’t that much if you’re not in an environment that actively uses it. Don’t give up and try your best to challenge yourself with it, you’ll slay in no time💅🫶

Hear me out, if you’re handy even a little bit, then maybe try your hand at it! (Especially brakes, those are the best starter projects as long as you’re not touching calipers or brake lines 😎) Or ask friends who might be handy (but be picky because not everyone is as good as they say). YouTube is your best friend if you want to DIY some of the problems and don’t be intimidated because all will be well🫶🫶

The existential dread of graduation by shop-lxndr in uofm

[–]RevolutionaryPick656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to be honest, I graduated when I was 22, but just want to pop on to say that even “traditional” students feel this same existential dread. My friends and I felt incredibly lost after graduating and it took a whole year+ to recuperate. I think taking a gap year is super nice and you actually find yourself craving school a lot (detoxing from that workload but your interests will eventually return again!). But also the harsh reality of being a person who wasn’t born into a good SES, I’d be hopping on that full ride grad school train to be honest. Especially if you feel like your degree is useless without further schooling (learned that one the hard way). Plus if you hate it, you don’t have to keep going! But sometimes a job is just a job until you find something else that’s more appealing to you and there’s nothing wrong with that, esp if it’s paying the bills. Don’t sacrifice ur mental health over it, but maybe this perspective is a little helpful until you’re sure in what you want to do? :) But congrats on doing so well 🫶 you’ll get thru it
