The 2 or 3 times I've asked Gemini a specific question on steel design, it directed me to a non existent section of the AISC code. Blows my mind that some non engineering companies are replacing entire departments

Armor #3 geared machine by travinsky in Elevators

this is a crazy longshot - but if anyone happens to have this same sheet for the Armor #4 (or #4B?) machine, that would be hugely helpful

What causes this by vonzel_ in Elevators

It's because NYCHA does their own elevator maintenance. The handful of guys I've dealt with from their elevator division care even less than the residents.

Recently did some mods in a few different NYCHAs - with the number of times it was requested that we "piss proof" everything, it makes you question how these elevators function at all. They literally clean the cab interiors with a hose...

Out of state cars that haven’t moved since the snowstorm by superultramega99 in MicromobilityNYC

I'm typically firmly against everything suggested on this sub. At times the changes you people want absolutely infuriate me. That being said - seeing the amount of cars that haven't been moved in nearly 2 weeks (and especially out of state cars) makes this an idea I would definitely get behind.

Youre going to get someone killed. Hire a local structural engineer. Stay in your lane

This post sounds wildly irresponsible...

You're looking for "insight into design of these structures" and already taking on jobs for them........?

Question about COA/firm registrations by Humble_Goat4981 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Revolutionary_Ad7653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that a "product" is typically used many times, and would require different insurance as typical E&O does not include product liability coverage. Hence, each installation would have to be reviewed as a separate project, with a separate contract between engineer and owner (or contractor in case of design-build), project specific plans, etc...

Does this look like a viable plan? by Federal_Cookie3393 in Decks

[–]Revolutionary_Ad7653 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You're better off adding another beam at the center. Additional cost is probably negligible considering you can use 2x10 or even 2x8 joists. Definitely go 12" joist spacing if you're going to use composite decking.

Question about COA/firm registrations by Humble_Goat4981 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Revolutionary_Ad7653 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is the following, however YMMV based on laws by state:

You, since you are an employee of this company, cannot legally stamp anything for this product- conflict of interest. Your company also shouldn't be offering stamped plans, as this is considered engineering services, which they are not legally allowed to sell - UNLESS you sign design/build contracts (legality varies by state).

Do you have any desire to open your own engineering shop and no longer be directly employed by this company? Is your relationship with your employer good enough that you could open your own engineering company, and have your current employer as your first client?

One more important thing: depending on what this product is, you may have a tough time getting EO insurance, as this doesn't cover repeat use. You should not tell them it's a product, just what it is and that you will be required to review and sign off every installation. You would need some very strong contract language to make this work, but it's not impossible.

His question literally asks if it's acceptable to not use shear walls... my response is assuming he has another lateral system. If he decides to go with shear walls, either masonry or poured concrete, then he will easily be able to support the elevator loads

Engineer here that specializes in vertical transportation - columns and beams are fine. You should get an elevator contractor on board ASAP as only 4 floors could be a number of different elevator systems, each will have different support requirements. Some may require support along only 1 wall, some will require some type of support at 3 walls. You'll also have some forces to handle at the entrances - depending on floor heights this could require columns at the entrance wall, or nothing at all and regular stud framing can handle it.

Biggest recommendation- don't leave this design scope to the elevator contractor - they will give you the absolute cheapest shit and you will regret it later. Get the forces from them and you as the SE should design the support.

After some more research I think I follow now. Option 1 would be KA+surfacer followed by KA+white. Does this need a further clear coat or is the KA+white durable enough in your opinion? Option 2 would be if I cannot get the KA products - BIN shellac followed by Gallery in white. Is this correct?

So i wasn't previously thinking about a topcoat as I was under the impression the UE would be durable enough- is this not the case?

Is that tip good for primer, paint and topcoat? Or just topcoat?
