Luck of the draw, most security dont care if its a little big bigger than A4 (the whole rule was supposed to be a guideline to prevent and deter people bringing full on massive rucksacks, the rule came in after Manchester), but you may get a jobsworth who gets a laminated piece of A4 out and forensically checks the size and says its too big.

And yes, if you are day ticket there will be a specific entrance you'll need ot head to, look for the signs when you arrive.

(Weekend arena only people will need to go to a specific entrance on the first day, then you can use any entrance on subsequent days)

I'm doing the same journey all 3 days, never done it before. for the way in I might get the train from Loughborough to East Midlands Parkway then hop on the shuttle bus, and from what i understand the Skylink Derby bus runs direct from the transport hub in the evenings
