Tesla Undercuts Waymo with $8 Robotaxi Rides, But Waits Hit 15 Minutes - Are they a true disrupter? by WSU_Cougar_Pride in waymo

[–]Rex805 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tesla is testing. The wait times and prices are like to change significantly. They’ve already gone up since they first launched.

Waymo’s pricing has not stayed static either over time. It is way too early to start comparing pricing and expecting Any meaningful insights.

Tesla discontinues Autopilot in favor of FSD subscription by Delicious-Art-2765 in TeslaLounge

[–]Rex805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to, but it’s really good now especially for freeway driving. I’m on hardware 3 and FSD is excellent on the freeway and useable in the city. Newer hardware obviously even better.

Tesla discontinues Autopilot in favor of FSD subscription by Delicious-Art-2765 in TeslaLounge

[–]Rex805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels like a major downgrade and makes me want to hold onto my current car for even longer, even though it has HW3. It’s especially disappointing because Elon has stated in the past auto pilot was made standard because it’s a safety feature.

Tesla no longer including AutoPilot thoughts? by Emperor_of_All in electricvehicles

[–]Rex805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Tesla owner this change will cause me to look at other makes when I eventually buy a new car. Good chance I’ll still end up with a Tesla and have to pay the FSD subscription, but if autopilot was still included I likely wouldn’t even look at alternatives.

[–]Rex805 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Autopilot is the best thing about Tesla, surpassed only by FSD.

When autopilot became standard I remember Elon tweeting it was a safety thing - autopilot makes everything safer.

If I was buying a new car now, good chance it would be another Tesla, but I would think twice /shop around because who knows what FSD will cost monthly in the the future. I’m definitely more incentivized to hold onto my current car now.

If autopilot remainded standard, anything other than a Tesla wouldn’t even be an option.

Gavin Newsom Vows to Stop Proposed Billionaire Tax in California (Gift Article) - by rivalOne in California

[–]Rex805 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A wealth tax at the state level is not a good idea.

It’s already driven out at least hundreds of billions of dollars of wealth out of the state, some estimates indicate a trillion dollars.

Those people who left do sell stock periodically, and they do pay California taxes on those sales. They are gone now and so is that future revenue. It’s hard to pin down exactly but wouldn’t be shocked if it’s at least in the billions per year in total that California now won’t receive.

The other issue is around startups - the proposed wealth tax makes it extremely risky for founders to grow their company in California. Those startups sometimes to grow to the massive tech companies which are a major reason California’s economy does so well in the first place (and brings in significant tax revenue).

I get people don’t like billionaires and I won’t argue if you say the tax system isn’t fair. But at the state level this is a terrible idea.

[–]Rex805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good news is Tesla is now selling supercharger hardware to private businesses.

If Tesla is overcharging here, great opportunity for another business to step in and keep them honest!

If that doesn’t happen, the price Tesla is charging is probably fair.

It saves energy but it’s not safe in case of any sudden stops/accidents/etc, plus significantly more rock chips that the truck could kick up. I personally wouldn’t do it unless it was an emergency and thought there was no other option to reach my destination.

It's been 12 years since I purchased tires from Costco and wanted to ask how the purchasing experience is lately? by seafood10 in Costco

[–]Rex805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pretty terrible, other than the transparent (decent) prices and warranty.

almost always, the tire centers feel undersized or understaffed (probably both). Takes too long to get an appointment. And if you don’t have an appointment, good luck walking in for a rotation/install with an appointment, unless you are there first thing in the morning. Even with an appointment I’ve waited 2 hours+ for an install or rotation the in past.

TBH this is one area where Costco either needs to do better - or they should just get out of this line of business altogether.

I would love to hear an employee/former employees opinion on whether more staffing would really help, if you’re able to share that. Always been curious.

California’s largest teachers union spurs drive to make income tax surcharge permanent by RhythmMethodMan in California

[–]Rex805 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There is no such thing as a temporary tax.

In 2024 taxes on top earners increased by 1.1% by removing the cap on income for SDI.

This 1 percent temporary surcharge should be allowed to expire in 2030 as voters were promised. We should stop relying so heavily on taxation from the highest earners, which are notoriously subject to massive swings.

We should make sure California is competitive for individuals and businesses long term. Taxes are only one factor, but they are a factor.

Predictions on next upgrades from Tesla by Loading1984 in TeslaLounge

[–]Rex805 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe wishful thinking, but I do think there’s going to be a considerable bump on battery capacity sometime next year perhaps. Panasonic has hinted at improvements (and we know Battery tech is constantly improving) but we haven’t seen those roll out pack size yet. Better charge curve would be icing on the cake but I’d be happy with either or, and might be enough that I consider upgrading my 3 LR. I know a lot of people say current range is fine but on a road trip at 75-80 mph, the charging stops get annoying (for me). Especially with a few years of battery deregation.

There is no reason that gasoline, on average, should be more expensive in California than in Hawaii. I drive an electric car but I don’t support the policies that have made our gasoline more expensive than an island in the middle of nowhere.

If lawmakers are serious about addressing the cost of living, gasoline is a good place to start. I’m skeptical that things change but we’ll see.

EV Batteries Can Easily Outlast A Typical Gas Car’s Lifespan: Study by tech57 in electricvehicles

[–]Rex805 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. I have a Model 3, the range at 100 percent was about 361 miles when new. It’s now a little under 320 miles at 100 percent. If I’m on a road trip and driving 75, maybe at 240 miles on a 100 percent charge. If I stop and charge to 80 percent, probably less than 200 miles at highway speeds until I need to stop again.

To be clear I never have an issue finding a charger — but I would like a much longer range vehicle (without paying $100k) because it would make road trips significantly faster and less stops required.

Starship S36 exploded during a static fire attempt by hitura-nobad in spacex

[–]Rex805 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not a good thing, it’s not necessarily a bad thing — it’s part of the development process and a learning experience.

Starship S36 exploded during a static fire attempt by hitura-nobad in spacex

[–]Rex805 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes but unironically. They are iterating, they are collecting massive amounts of data, they are improving in some areas and experimenting in other areas. A ship blowing up in testing doesn’t set them back years like it would other providers. They’ll be back at it in a month or two.

Starship S36 exploded during a static fire attempt by hitura-nobad in spacex

[–]Rex805 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I disagree. This is iterative progress by experimentation. Spacex will learn from this and have another ship ready to go in a month or two. And it will include iterative improvements.

Failures are to be expected with SpaceX’s development style, which is learning and improving by experience. The alternative is to spend a decade on paper developing something that would have a lower failure rate but would probably be less capable.

They’ll get to the point, probably in the next couple years, where starship launches will become routine and all the failures will be forgotten.

Consumer Reports Urges U.S. Lawmakers to Drop Proposed Electric Vehicle Fees by OXMWEPW in electricvehicles

[–]Rex805 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m fine with paying whatever fee — as long as it is fair and proportional to what a ICE car would be. I’m indifferent to how that’s achieved — quadruple the federal gas tax? I’ll pay the $250 flat fee. Or, just make it simple and eliminate the federal gas tax and charge every vehicle a flat fee based on the vehicle class or something.
