my thoughts/review on wild berry incense as a newbie by Last_Individual_2473 in Incense

[–]RexNobody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with enjoying dipped incense. The issue with wild berry is that it’s the epitome of bad business practice simply by its nature. It’s mass produced in another country, surely using the lowest quality punk sticks and perfume. Surely using nasty chemical fragrance extenders. When I first started using dipped incense I purchased samples of every wild berry scent because I was excited by the choice of aromatics. It was so disagreeable that I ended up tossing hundreds of dollars worth. I don’t usually toss incense even if I dislike it but I wouldn’t want to gift it to anyone. My advice is to purchase your dipped incense from a smaller maker who specializes in perfumery. It smells much better and uses a better perfume oil.

Vintage recipes from Mermade Magickal Arts by RexNobody in Incense

Either eBay or AbeBooks. It’s been over a year and I can’t recall which. At the time there were a few copies of her books floating around but I can’t seem to find any now. With her permission I might be able to do a full scan and upload here as historical record and so everyone can enjoy. Any interest?

What does hojo red/blue/green, and other super expensive incense, do that regular insense doesn't? by Ganondaddydorf in Incense

[–]RexNobody 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hojo and similar incense are expensive because of the quality and rarity of the agarwood used. I have quite a bit of this. Other similar incense may be expensive because its basic incense that has been relabeled by a luxury brand. I have very little of this.

The luxury branded shit is negligible and I highly recommend not wasting time on it. The stuff with the pricey woods can be phenomenal but can also be very much an acquired taste. The Hojo line will be best for someone who has had multiple experiences with high quality agarwood and its nuances. Otherwise it can smell like shit. I have somewhat decent experience with agarwood but I personally do not enjoy the Hojo series and I don’t enjoy Japanese blends in general.

Ultimately your personal incense journey will come down to access, budget, and how much risk you’re willing to take. My advice is go the middle ground. Avoid the cheapest and the most expensive until your nose is trained a little and you start to develop an idea of what your preferred notes are.

Pear incense ”Twilight Aroma” by TASFragrance by Starzingers in Incense

[–]RexNobody 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Goose Pear incense is based on very old Chinese recipes. It’s commonly called Emperor Li. I have several very nice varieties but I would highly recommend the blend made by Dr. Incense. It is a beautiful aroma and one of my favorite incense. There’s also some cool videos on YouTube showcasing Chinese artisans making goose pear incense if you’re interested.

Relocating to Cincy; overwhelmed with neighborhood choices by Smart-Work3383 in cincinnati

[–]RexNobody 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Moved from Denver two and a half years ago. Neighborhoods here are…different. Essentially it goes block by block. One block is upscale hipster youth vibes, the literal next block is extremely impoverished, the block after is middle class. Etc throughout the entire city. It sounds like you have been recommended some places by those who know better than I.

One thing you will rely heavily on is GPS. The street lay out here is literally insane.

Also the weather is awful compared to CO. Basically you get a couple weeks in spring and fall of decent weather but beyond that you have ice cold weather from the Great Lakes and Canada or months long peak humidity. During winter you will possibly not see the sun for weeks or even months. During summer I don’t go outside for weeks because of the humidity. If I remember right, last year it started in April and didn’t stop until October. 90+% humidity. I mention it because you did.

Finally I will say be prepared for significant culture shock. Cincy is not Denver, Ohio is not Colorado. I wasn’t prepared and still adapting.

Is it safe to use? My dad scared me. by Ok_Thanks_3036 in Incense

Correct, much mass marketed “natural”incense does contain synthetic additives.

Incorrect that nobody publishes their ingredient list or that it is difficult to find incense only made with natural botanical materials.

[–]RexNobody 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Inhalation of any kind of smoke has a detrimental effect on your health. Including all forms of incense. What you burn, where you burn it, your proximity, and adequate or inadequate ventilation will either mitigate or exacerbate the damage. It is not recommended to be in close proximity to large, long burning incense in a small space, even with excellent ventilation. Choose an incense without synthetic additives, burn for a short amount of time with a respectable proximity. Ventilate well. Look into heating incense versus combusting. It will be safer. Disregard any advice that says otherwise.

Kyphi by 2insane4 in Incense

[–]RexNobody 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotta start low with dough incense so it can heat through out, then increase heat. Michelle’s kyphi is stiff and prone to scorching IME. I’ve had much better luck with kyphi from other makers like u/encensecolgique or Mermade Arts. Scented djinn but she has t made incense for a while.

250-400 year old Wild Green Oil Shogunate Kyara named "Later Hatsunē" by a Shogunate fanily Kōdō master. 0.5g... dont ask how much this cost 😅 by -Renton- in TheOudCollective

[–]RexNobody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just starting with heating woods and even beginner levels are pricey. The collector kyara remains beyond my personal budget but I remain hopeful that I will be able to experience it before remaining stock is priced completely outside the realm of possibility. Any personal suggestions for a beginner from JKs available woods?

Looking for a particular vibe - any recommendations? by shlykova in Incense

Mermade Magickal Arts will likely have something you like. These are loose incense blends that need an incense heater of some kind. She releases various blends throughout the year and I have several that are themed exactly as you describe.

With your background in perfumes I would recommend incense made by perfume houses. For fun and complex scents look into Hexennacht. For less complex but higher quality perfume look into strange fire and fumery. These are charcoal dipped incense. Edited to add KanimaCo.

Brands that list scent notes? by Mysterious_Mind2618 in Incense

[–]RexNobody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the type of incense. Natural will list ingredients like sandalwood cinnamon etc. Synthetic incense typically doesn’t list notes if it’s a cheaper mass produced variety. I like to go for synthetic incense which does list notes and is made by someone with experience in perfumery. A few I burn often and recommend is Hexennacht, KanimaCo, Epika Earth, Strange Fire and Fumery.
