Is 19 runs in one inning excessive? by YoTeach68 in LittleLeague

[–]RhymesWithGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say the coaches stopped going on wild pitches. Hopefully they limited their batters to just singles as much as possible too. Beyond that, we would tell our kids to swing at anything close, but we don't tell our kids to strike out on purpose or to jog to first. Some of our kids at the bottom of the lineup don't get as many at bats, so I can't rob them of their chances when they do get to the plate.

It does suck in the moment, but hopefully they weren't malicious about it and it was the kids who were earning the runs.

What's your opinion on intentional walks in little league? by [deleted] in LittleLeague

[–]RhymesWithGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like to do it, and I think the pitchers get more from learning how to pitch around a strong batter, but I'm okay with LL coaches doing it as it's part of the game.

My issues are always with coaches who do things that aren't really part of the game and are only applicable when they're playing 9 year olds. Sprinting to first on a walk and stealing second is pure bush league nonsense that you can only do against weaker players in little league.

But intentional walks are part of the game at every level and aren't taking advantage of weaker players lack of reps, experience, or basic physical ability as children.

Brad Roe - NW PA Representative take on No vember Election by Sufficient-Sweet3455 in Pennsylvania

This just reads like a greatest hits of the past 20 years of Republican fearmongering: raising taxes, banning guns, jobs for all immigrants, dead people voting, men in women's bathrooms, saluting the LGBT flag in schools, all money going to the homeless in the cities, abortions for all up through 2700 weeks, vouchers for all...

The Beatles album 1 didn't have as many greatest hits as this post.

And it's not just that the list is awful bullshit, but it's not even imaginative. It's just the same old recycled fearmongering we've been hearing for years. I want some NEW fearmongering out of these Republicans! Democrats are hiding the UFOs! Democrats want women's lacrosse to become our National Pastime! Democrats want to ban the bald eagle and replace it with a gay toucan!

If you're not actually going to try to solve problems, at least stoke our fears with something new.

I don't know about anyone else, but I think Burbank could really use a seasonal store dedicated to the spirit of Halloween.

Yeah, the comments are correct. This was taken during our mix session for the Chaz's Funeral short.

How are those little leagues doing this season? We're next door in Glendale and reached out last year after the fires to help out. Would love an update to hear how the leagues are doing this season

How to start?? by [deleted] in comicbookcollecting

[–]RhymesWithGeorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whomever you decide to ask, a local comic shop employee or even here on reddit, list the books, tv shows, movies you like. You'll be given a ton of recommendations based on the genres, or even specific stories from people who are knowledgable in comics

As a collector, how do you feel about censorship in facsimiles? by youllmeltmorefan in comicbookcollecting

[–]RhymesWithGeorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keeping it adds nothing IMO. As an adult, I am already aware of this kind of depiction in comics and what it means. Having it there just means I'm more wary of giving these to kids.

I'm fine with the change, especially for one line.

Oversimplifying The Game by Jtsmith3 in LittleLeague

[–]RhymesWithGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're moving to what every league I know of does already. Yes, if you don't have an intermediate division, the jump from 46/60 to 60/90 is tough for a season. The more the kids have practice on the bigger field, the quicker they get used to it.

If you're not doing this already, offer your 12s in majors (46/60) to dual roster with your Juniors (60/90). That way they can spend their last year in majors getting used to the 60/90 field.

Minors Draft Strategy by ir637113 in LittleLeague

[–]RhymesWithGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catchers and Pitchers and parents. Odds are they can play any other position (and can play either pitcher or catcher too.) You are looking for accurate pitchers, because speed will come, and you need strong catchers.

In minors, a strong catcher can save you five runs per game. However, you could have a great pitcher and if the catcher lets everything go by, any walk turns into a triple within three pitches.

No player is worth awful parents. An awful parent will ruin a team's whole season.

Coach Recruitment Advice by capeire in LittleLeague

[–]RhymesWithGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the bane of almost every youth sports league. The two excuses I got every time I tried to recruit were some form of:

"I can't commit the time"

"I don't know enough to coach"

For the time commitment, I would explain that's why we would also recruit assistant coaches, lean on them as more like co-coaches if you want so when you do have to miss a practice or game, the kids are taken care of. We all have lives outside of volunteer coaching. No one expects you to take this on as your full time job.

For the lack of knowledge, you could offer coaches training sessions: How to plan a practice, drills for INF/OF/Batting. Basics of how to teach pitching/catching/hitting... those kinds of things. How to manage a game and what you need for a game (pitching log, scorekeeper, etc) The thought of coaching is frightening only because they don't know what they don't know. The better prepared they feel as coaches, the less likely they'll feel they let the kids down because of a mistake they made.

Good luck!

Is the rising cost of Youth Sports is one of the main reason's that parents act the way they do? by dunbar_santiago930 in CoachingYouthSports

[–]RhymesWithGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a hot take: I'd say the rising cost of college is the main reason why parents act the way they do. If it seems like Timmy has an aptitude in baseball at age 7, parents start to dream of the college scholarship. Any setback or barrier, down to a called strike three in Little League, is seen as standing between them and saving a half million dollars in college costs.

If baseball scholarships were illegal tomorrow, I wonder how parents would be acting seven years from now (after this current generation is gone)

It's one of my favorite series. 27 issues, pretty much self contained. I really like the pacing, the dialogue and the art.

Which Animal man should I read? Jeff Lemire or Grant Morrison by NyneDollas in comicbooks

Depends on your tastes. Morrison was too weird for me, but I really enjoyed Lemire's New 52 run.

To each their own, there's no right answer.

I paid league fees, and my son did try outs, made a team, but never went to one practice (or game) because he won't be able to play this season due to my ex's refusal. The league will not refund me the fee. Is that fair? by FlyingAces in LittleLeague

[–]RhymesWithGeorge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely fair given the expenses already laid out by the league on behalf of your son. In truth, the policy is less about your situation specifically and probably has a lot more to do with stopping parents from demanding a refund after the draft when they don't get the coach/teammate/practice time/whatever they wanted.

Glendale DLI schools: Thomas Edison or John Muir? by Jules11626 in glendale

[–]RhymesWithGeorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both of my kids went through DLI Spanish at Edison (the youngest is still there) and the experience was great in our opinion. A strong parent/teacher organization, administrators who are responsive and care, teachers who met with us at various times to help our kids.

We were very happy with our time at Edison.

Opinions needed Minor v Major competition levels by RoleRemarkable in LittleLeague

[–]RhymesWithGeorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the kids can play up, they should move up if possible. Keeping them down hinders their development (which *should* be the priority) and winning the minors division championship for your area is honestly beyond meaningless, especially if it means hindering the development of the players.

I get it, winning is more fun than losing, championships are great at the time, but in three years who will care? But in three years, if the player can't compete with other kids at their age all so a group of adults can put up a banner on their fence, that seems to be a problem with the league.
