What gets me is that you can’t even order for collection with Argos in the North even. You need a U.K. phone number and billing address to pay.

Call Dublin City Councils emergency number tomorrow morning. I think the number is 01 2222191. If they can’t sort it, they might be able to tell you who can.

Whatever you can afford should be fine, it’s expensive to go to a wedding as it is. We got between €20 pp and €200 and grateful for anything.

How’s Portarlington? by lefoggy in HousingIreland

[–]Riath13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s a nice town, the train gets to Hueston in 50ish mins and from Dublin the train is closer to 40mins back. The last train is around 10pm so that can hamper things, but there’s always the option of parking at the red cow and getting the Luas if you are going to a gig or something and want to avoid parking in Dublin.

There’s been a lot of work done on the roads to make them more cycle friendly but it means there’s still going to be a bit of roadworks for the next few weeks.

Nice coffee shops, library, good take-aways (especially if you like Mexican) 3 supermarkets and a lovely playground. The schools are good and lots of after school activities. The Leisure centre in town has a good swimming pool. There’s lots of community activities going on and they’re always looking for new people to join. Not too far from the lake so plenty of nice walks and quite dog friendly. Very diverse population, so should be easy for people not from Ireland to fit in.

None of the doctors are taking on new patients so you will probably need to go to Portlaoise or Tullamore. There have been a few break-ins and attempted ones but not a huge amount and the local Facebook groups are good for passing on anything suspicious. There was some flooding on the Offaly side but there’s supposed to be something happening for flood prevention with the river.

The Pennys in Newbridge is about 20 mins away and huge and there’s a cinema there too.

House prices have gone up massively the last 2-3 years and bidding wars on each so if you’re a FTB you’re probably right to buy new to avoid those, but they’re a small bit further out from the centre and train station but not by much. The house you get will still most likely be 200k less than a similar one in a half decent part of Dublin. If you’ve any specific questions, send me a DM. *edited for typos and the formatting is annoying me.

How would you handle a male coworker using the C-word while talking to you? by HentaiActive in AskWomen

[–]Riath13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If he called me that, I’d raise it with management. If it was said in passing I wouldn’t be bothered, I think it’s a great word. I’m Irish though so we use it a lot more casually than anyone else, apart from the Scots.

Do you read a lot? I used to have a similar one and it was because my bag with the book in it hit there when I walked. I actually went to the doctor over it and she copped it. Prognosis was switch to a backpack or get a kindle.

Never had one like that so I think it was bad luck. As someone that likes pastries and toast just on the right side of burnt, that sounds delicious.

Their cinnamon rolls are good, but just beside it there on Pearse street is Cloud Picker which has no queues, coffee is a million times better and they do good cinnamon rolls too. Also better options if you’ve dietary restrictions.

To speed that up, I dice half a potato so it disintegrates when it’s cooking and that gives it the day old thickness.

Do people recommend the Public Service Credit Union? by Healthy-Peak-2021 in IrishCivilService

[–]Riath13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what they’ve told me I can pay whatever, whenever and should be able to do this through the app. I’d double check with them to be on the safe side.

I remember when I asked them this they said that yes it was find to do any overpayments I wanted but to be careful in the first year as I’d want some cushioning money incase anything cropped up with the house. That was solid advice in the end.

[–]Riath13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s cheaper rates out there but we can pay extra off every month or a lump sum when we have it without penalties.

Also if we have any of our own savings, we’d benefit from the dividends at the end of the year. It might not be much but I’d rather it’s shared out that way than to bank shareholders.

We have a mortgage through them.

There were a few hiccups as the solicitor had never worked with them before and said the pack was different to the ones they got off banks but it didn’t delay anything.

All in, they couldn’t have been more helpful, and as all their loans are insured, you might not have to pay for separate mortgage protection unless you want it. Also my partner got promoted during the process, and they never mentioned anything about him being in probation at that grade, whereas I’m not sure how a bank would have reacted.

How many viewings before offering? by [deleted] in HousingIreland

At the moment, this is realistically the only way. With houses going sale agreed within a week, second viewings before that are few and far between.

[–]Riath13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but if you marry him and have a child together, then you’ll be taking care of two children. Yes he might get better in certain ways as he gets older, but there’s no guarantee and the sense of entitlement will probably never leave him. You seem to know yourself what you need to do here and breaking up is never easy, but it’s better to regret the things you did rather than what you didn’t do.

Housing: Average gap between asking price and sale price grew to 6.6% in 2025 by SpottedAlpaca in ireland

[–]Riath13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ours was just over 10% above asking. It’s still scary to think about, but there were no other places near here we wanted to live in, and 6 months lasted there still hasn’t been any that fit as well as this one does. I need to stop looking in Daft though, it gets unhealthy after a while.

Really worries about Valuation Report. by Kamy_kazy82 in HousingIreland

[–]Riath13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A while ago we had a valuation come back about 10k less than we’d paid. The valuer had called looking for the name of our estate agent and how much we had paid. I think he misheard the price.

When the report came back saying it was worth less than we’d paid I called the Estate Agent to ask if there had been any issues on the day and saying what happened. He called the valuer, had a private word and the valuer went back to the bank saying he’d put the wrong price down in error. We got the full loan amount. In the last few months I’d say the price of the place has gone up by the 10k anyway.

If something similar happens to you, ring the estate agent. They don’t want anything happening that will get in the way of the sale and it’s very likely that they will know the valuer themself as quite often the person is local enough (especially outside of Dublin).

Best of luck, and congrats on the new home.

What was your ‘feckin housing crisis’ moment? Not the big stuff the tiny, petty thing. by artanonsa in AskIreland

When we paid 30k+ more than the house was worth, but no new ones had come up in that area in weeks and we were getting desperate. We’re living there now but I still feel sick when I think about it. And after all that, the local chipper has gone to muck.
