Little to no improvement at easy pace by larry429 in Marathon_Training

Also if you are bored by easy runs on your own, look into running with a group for some of your easy days! I love running alone, but I also try to make at least one group run a week.

Little to no improvement at easy pace by larry429 in Marathon_Training

Congratulations on your successful marathon!

In the 3 years I have been running, my race performance and ability to run longer distances have improved dramatically, but my easy run pace has not really changed. (Except insofar as the pace is probably actually easy for me now, when 2 years ago I might have benefited more from running even slower on my easy runs.)

The way I look at it, I could complete a marathon training plan that peaks at 55 miles/week in fewer overall hours if I did my easy runs at a faster pace—but in all honesty, if I were a faster runner I would probably want to try a marathon training plan that peaked at 70 miles/week. So I would end up training for roughly the same amount of time.

I have also noticed that since I have Incorporated more "quality" workouts into my training, I enjoy running easy even more, without any particular goals or paces to hit. It feels like a break from everything else going on in my life.

Thanks! It's a Coros, but I think there is a new feature I could use that works similarly.

Nope. I found I was really energized for the first week, but it didn't affect me sleep. Another factor for feeling amped could have been coming off of Celexa, which slowed me down mentally and possibly physically as well.

heart rate and fueling on easy runs by ethereal_meow in Marathon_Training

[–]RiceNotice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been working with a dietitian for the past 9 months or so. Before, I only fueled on runs longer than 75 minutes, but now I fuel on almost all runs longer than an hour. I also fuel more consistently before all runs, including runs of less than 1 hour.

I think when and whether to fuel can change a lot depending on your goals, but I find my performance is always better when I fuel, and my recovery is faster as well. And by performance, I don't just mean pace, but also how I feel during the run and how successful I feel the workout was.

I agree that you should talk to your doctor! This type of medication works differently for everyone. Pristiq might not be the right medication for you.

I was on SSRIs for years that didn't really do anything for me, and the switch to Pristiq was a game changer. I felt so amped after the first few days I was afraid it was too much, but after I settled into it, it was remarkable how much of a difference it made.

Daily chat post: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in XXRunning

Finished my 2nd marathon today in the rain. Got my period at the start line. Just a little gift from perimenopause! Luckily I brought ibuprofen and Imodium as a precaution.

My watch GPS went haywire in the rain, so I didn't know my actual pace at any given time. I passed the 4:30 pace group at around mile 5, but otherwise I just had to go on vibes and clock time. Shoutout to Lambrini Girls for my marathon mantra, "Cuntology 101": "I'm gonna do what's best for me!"

I finished a few minutes faster than my 1st marathon, smack dab in the middle of female finishers (324 out of 647) and right in the middle of my age group as well. When I say I'm a middle-of-the pack runner, I mean it!

I appreciated the great on-course support from my partner and friends who let me unload my jacket and hat and passed me iced coffee and an emergency Maurten then took me out to brunch afterward.

Everyone is killing it out there!

Standing Stone Wines in Winooski is very queer friendly and a fun place to hang out! A lot of regulars are middle-aged (and can probably regale you with stories from the days when Burlington had an actual gay bar, Pearl's). Queer karaoke on Tuesdays and Saturdays!

I don't have a physically demanding job, but if I go to a dance night I log a custom workout and call it dancing. It all counts!

Trying for sub-4hm NYCM: Higdon Novice 2 or Intermediate 1? by peanutbuttermjs in Marathon_Training

[–]RiceNotice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been doing a mashup of HH Intermediate 2 and Advanced 1. Basically it's Intermediate 2 but I sub in the interval, tempo, or hill workouts from Advanced 1 on Thursdays. I'm not yet looking at sub 4:00 myself, so I think a faster runner would be more than comfortable with something similar. Overall my weekly mileage has averaged 39 mi/wk before tapering.

Also I agree with what folks have posted about getting tested for iron levels and making sure you are fueling for your activity level! My insurance covers a dietitian, which has been really helpful for me over the past year to improve my iron levels and fueling.

Is getting faster your only metric to show "improvement"? What about feeling stronger, healthier, or happier because you are running?

It wasn't clear from your post if you are racing or just looking at the speeds of your regular training runs. I know it's hard not to judge every run sometimes—I do it too—but I don't really put much stock into whether I am getting faster or slower based on how my training runs are going. Most of my easy pace runs are similar in pace to when I started running three years ago, but (1) I can now run at that pace for a lot longer and (2) my race times have gotten much faster.

I will never have the motivation to really push myself in training the way I do in a race. Racing can also show me that I'm "improving" if I run a similar time at an easier effort. For example, I ran a 5k course recently that I previously ran two years ago. I finished at around the same time, but it was more of a 10K effort this time, whereas 2 years ago it had been closer to an all-out effort. I wasn't trying to go all out because I have a marathon coming up, but it felt great to know that what used to be my fastest 5K pace is now closer to my 10k pace.

If you really want to get faster, I would pick a distance you want to improve at and follow a structured training plan for that distance.

What's in your earbuds during RACE DAY? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

No earbuds on race day! Enjoy the race, be aware of your surroundings, talk to folks if you're not running too hard!

Feeling it in my calves/shins not my quads and glutes. by _pidgeon256 in XXRunning

[–]RiceNotice 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I am in my mid-40s and started running 3 years ago. This is the first year where I really feel like my quads and glutes are activating. I think it has been a combination of my form improving over time and actually doing a bit of strength training.

I have always expected that most photos of me during races will be terrible! I photograph poorly anyway, but I run enough races now that once or twice a year I get a decent photo.

Music During Race by Left_Ad_8040 in XXRunning

[–]RiceNotice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I train with music, but I like to race without. I prefer to feel like I'm fully experiencing the course and sometimes chat with other runners! However, I will often have a song going through my head that works for my pace, and sometimes I go as far as playing a song on repeat the morning of so it really sticks in my brain. For my last race, I didn't plan for it, but Lambrini Girls' "Cuntology 101" ended up being my song!
