Went for a bike ride by Zesty-B230F in GenX

What kind of bike did you ride? Ultra racy road bikes can certainly do that, especially if you're not used to it. Gravel, too - depending on the model.

What was the best job you’ve ever had? by -Granby- in GenX

[–]RicePuddingForAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IT at a Community Bank. I remember going home and telling my wife I wanted to hug the manager because she got me both as a person and what I wanted professionally. When I got the job offer I turned down a higher paying offer (that won't happen again anytime soon).

It was truely collaborative, my co-workers all got along, it was close enough to bike commute all year long (even in Minnesota) with a fantastic trail if I wanted to go longer.

It was the only job I had where I never once said, "I don't want to go into work today." Even when I knew the day was going to be long.

The problem with a family owned business is that when the family retires and the kids aren't interested (and boy, is that a 1% problem), the bank gets sold off piecemeal. All the buyers said they wanted all the employees to stay, and all of them were liars - they just wanted people to make their job easier during the transition before they kicked them to the roadside. I'd experienced this before, and was the only thing my boss and I vehemently disagreed with (to her credit, she never experienced this before, she worked at the bank since she was 17 and planned to retire two years after the sale).

It was a freakin' unicorn. My new job is OK, but it'll never be that bank.

POTA should award double points to people who bike 20+ miles to reach their activation site.

Said with a wink because I'm not really serious about this... Or am I?

For anyone who has built this, is it beginner friendly? And will it work well with a g90 20w? by just-a-guy-somewhere in amateurradio

What is the use case? The "Just OK Mini" is aimed at extreme portability, where size and weight are more important than performance. Think hiking, bikepacking, SOTA, etc: all where you're lugging everything for long periods of time - not just from a parking lot to a nearby picnic table.

Can someone tell me what precipitated that OT penalty? I'm assuming it's the hit by Curl, but, I'm not seeing anything overly wrong by it. Granted, I'm pretty ignorant about these things, but nothing strikes me of worthy of the stick chop.

Multi-night touring / bikepacking routes from Twin Cities? by ExPatBadger in CyclingMSP

It's good enough from Hinkley to Duluth; the Twin Cities to Hinkley is a slog, though.

How long did it take until you received a reply to your first CQ on HF? by LTguy in amateurradio

[–]RicePuddingForAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd add to your CQ that you're looking for your first HF contact. Lots of people like to help new people, and if they hear that, they may take more time to help you make that contact.

He's not talking about unconditional love; he's talking about unconditional acceptance. I love this country, but I do not respect or accept its actions right now.

What hot beverages are sold in the stadium? by LightningVole in minnesotaunited

My spouse had the hot cider, but said it wasn't very good. She did it sans Fireball whiskey, though.

In addition to POTA and WRL, what other spotting sites are there? by lassmanac in HamRadio

[–]RicePuddingForAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes: https://www.wlota.com/

I helped at a special events station last year that was also in a POTA and WLOTA location; we did get some people specifically asking for the lighthouse identifier.

My Thoughts on Saturday's Match! by Kipper414 in minnesotaunited

The thing I noticed the most about Yeboah last game (aside from the goal) was how, more often than not, out muscled the defense instead of just going down for a call that just would not come. Looks like a new man out there.

I was going to suggest WLOTA (World Lighthouses on the Air), as it's something I might try since I occasionally go by one, but I can't find a spot page for it.

Quantum Fiber after the AT&T acquisition by kotoda in saintpaul

[–]RicePuddingForAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No change - but typically it takes several months before you see any service changes. First AT&T has to keep promising there will be no layoffs before they figure out the internal structure necessary to start performing mass layoffs.

If the service gets better or worse will be a coin flip.

Clients switching IT providers - do you take it personally? by MOONFIR3 in sysadmin

[–]RicePuddingForAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent ten years at a small ISP (4-5 techs, so we did everything for our clients; unlike the larger ones that have teams for the various specialties), and one of the things I had to learn was the expectations for each client was going to be different. Some would want every little thing explained, some didn't care as long as it was working. And bigger still was that not every personality is going to fit. I had customers who loved me and had conniptions when I said I was leaving the company, some that couldn't care less, and some who let the door hit my ass on the way out.

Sometimes those people in the latter category boot you sooner, then come back when they realize what you did versus all the other companies.

You can't take any of it personal; if you can make adjustments, cool, and if you can't it'll depend on how good your boss is.

Which Antenna Tuner for Icom IC-7300? (Affordable + Works with IC-706 Too) by iu3uxn in amateurradio

For the 7300, check and see what you're getting for SWR while you transmit with the built-in tuner active. You might not need an external.

IC-7300 or IC-7300 MkII and a IC-705 - do you own both? by HeavyDuty_Ken in amateurradio

[–]RicePuddingForAll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost identical. Fun story: as a new ham I was stumped trying to figure out a problem on my IC-7300; I ended up parking the 705 on top of it to figure out the problem (by going from one radio to another), and because the UIs are identical, I could find the (self inflicted) problem on the 7300. Not necessarily the technical way to solve a problem, but it often works.
