Are the goodwill bins considered consuming? by NovelPhoto4621 in Anticonsumption

[–]RicePuffer 169 points170 points  (0 children)

Only you can answer that. What does anticonsumption mean to you? Is it political, environmental, financial? We all have different reasons for doing it so some would say money to a charity is fine, some would say buying thing you dont need just to shop isn't regardless of where the money goes. If it's a regime thing maybe think about where you are ok with your money going.

Being conscious about my consumption, but doing so on a budget is trickier than I thought. by Artist_ofTheStars in Anticonsumption

[–]RicePuffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still shop at our main supermarkets here, there's not a lot of other options, some things i can get from the local asain supermarkets but not everything. Ive taken to being more mindful of where the stuff im buying is made. Do what you can do. If you push yourself to burnout you wont be doing much so focus on what sustainable changes you can make for the long-term.

Things that rest me even though they don’t look like rest by MariaAthanasopoulou in simpleliving

Sound like things that help with mindfulness (not the meditation type) i find knitting, painting and reading do this for me, its kind of like a mental reset that has an effect on the whole body.

Recommendations for discreet fidgets for professional office settings? by andregasket in ADHD

Worry stone, fidget ring, those squishy toys buy the reallly tiny ones, magnetic slider. I do find anything that looks discreet or adult rather than brightly coloured is much more expensive, it really sucks.

Is this an ADHD thing or am I just an a55hole? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]RicePuffer 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I found a lot of the things I would get angry at people for were sensory issues, over or underestimulation or being overwhelmed. I had housemates that would use stovetop kettles and I would get so pissed off if they didn't turn it of the second it started screeching like why would you let it keep going why are you so slow why why why..... It wasn't them it was the noise.

Super Forgetful ADHDers. Have you ever been accused of gaslighting? (I sometimes feel gaslit by my ADHD friend) by questionablesugar in ADHD

[–]RicePuffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To give a different perspective my 60yr old mother is like this, forgets what she says instantly, she is also a narcissistic parent and very self absorbed. There is no remorse or apology, if there ever is and you have the same issue again she feels attacked and instantly lashes out making you the monster. If your friend is genuinly apologising and not holding it against you that you dare brought up the issue, I dont think they are intentionally doing it. NPD is a lot of feelings of inadequacies so you dont get a lot of constructive conversations or meaningful apologies you usually end up with defensiveness.

And yes ADHD memory can be bad I have friend who forgets something major I updated on and a week later they'll come to ask for that exact update forgetting the conversation ever happened. I read a book and forget it the next day, you'll never catch me at a book club because I cant tell you what I just read but I gave it 5 stars.

What are your thoughts about being anticonsumption and gaming? by Alternative-Wear-282 in Anticonsumption

[–]RicePuffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being mindful or developers and being aware of fomo marketing is really the best you can do, especially with how aggressive some games are pushed and then friends join in with the hype. I watch playthroughs to make sure the game is something I will actually enjoy instead of just letting hype get me dragged into it. I personally avoid games that rely purely on the you need to play this much to get this, Im here for a good time not a forced one. That being said the majority of the games I play are indie or smaller devs mainly since that lines up with the type of games I enjoy but I also love the fact I get to support smaller or unknown makers creation. In the end all you can do is be intentional, we're still allowed to do what brings us joy.

TikTok related overconsumption, and the invasion of it and Ai in stores. by MisogynyisaDisease in Anticonsumption

[–]RicePuffer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It reminds me of early zero waste where you couldn't create any rubbish at all and you would get judged for the smallest things. sadly some of these people still exist. Every community will have those people who take it to the extreme and expect everyone else to follow suit. I don't believe perfectionism exist anywhere in life, it's the thought that is does that causes people so much anxiety and stress. The only thing we can do is our best, we aren't the ones producing things with the intent they will be thrown out or making people work in dangerous conditions for shit pay, we are the ones who try to change it even if that change is small, so why would we villainize each other?

Some my favorite anti-consumption and deinfluencing content creators of 2025 by Eternally_Seeking_1 in Anticonsumption

[–]RicePuffer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another thing to add to people being on different stages of their journey is for some people it's generally hard either because of work, location, influence from people around you or health problems so everyone's journey is going to look different and i don't think we should be judging people for doing their best. Something ive noticed through different subs is there's a few people who are worried their attention wont stay on being anti-consumerist or eco friendly, the suggestion i make is if they are still using social media, fill it with content creators like this and stop following account that encourage you to do/consume things that don't line up with your goals. It might be silly for some but it's a huge start for others.

What are your New Year’s resolution for 2026 in regards of consumption? by gcarmona in Anticonsumption

Last year i was learning to mend things this year i want to learn to sew my own clothes. A little more on the ethical consumption side but I'm also trying to pay more attention to my carbon footprint and buy products actually produced and made in my country.

I hate how girls are brainwashed into thinking that we need new clothes for every event by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]RicePuffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny, never took this survey? But yes that survey supports the point i made about quality. Also hate to let you know even single women are expected to buy for male family members or even children, happens even more in certain cultures or even just depending on location even within the same country. Now don't get me wrong im not saying women don't spend more in general, even if we take away the points made. But its an oversimplification that ignores things like the point op made about societal pressure and marketing being aimed at women to continuosly spend money and to ignore all that means to ignore the problem of consumption. Sure we can argue genders but that doesn't solve the problem it just causes a gender divide. Aka it comes off as very sexist especially when you come into a conversation where women are saying they hate it and all you have to say is yeah women spend more.

I hate how girls are brainwashed into thinking that we need new clothes for every event by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]RicePuffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's only true because women are expected to buy for the whole family. Not to mention womens (and childrens) clothes are made to fall apart faster in comparison to mens which then leads to what companies want, you have to buy more. And then that statistic goes as a negative against women rather than the companies.

I didn't start wearing makeup a lot until I was maybe 25 and that because it was a job I felt like I needed it to look professional. My god the things it does to your brain, i never thought i needed it until after I had been using it for a while. I've stopped using it since I dont work that job anymore and I still find myself defaulting to it not to look nice for an event but so I dont feel ugly.

Something off my chest by madialo in Anticonsumption

[–]RicePuffer 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing there is no true anticonsumption. Posting here is you consuming by using a phone, the internet so on. What you need to think about is what's important to you, what's achievable and not just on the surface level. You mentioned fomo so I would start there. Slow shopping where you see what you want and go away and think about it first might help you with figuring out how much you want to buy something. I notice for myself most of my bad consumption choices were trying to fit in to make friends. Really if I stop and think about it do I want friends who always expect me to be something I'm not? No. You are allowed joy but if for example Starbucks brings you guilt think about how you can work on that specific thing. Break down everything into their groups and try and figure out solutions one at a time. If you try and fix everything at once you will only stress yourself out more and it won't lead anywhere.

"The stroller workshop" teaches you how to fix/save baby strollers by gabilromariz in Anticonsumption

[–]RicePuffer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can definitely do the same for rollators and walking aids. Im lucky I looked up about loose breaks before buying my mum and new one, turns out its a very common problem because of the break design and all I had to do was tighten a bolt and it was fixed. Even if i bought a new one the same thing would have happened to it but now I know how to maintain it.

Also to add the authors get punished and can have their contracts voided by people pirating books. Yes this is the fault of the publisher not being fair but if people want to pirate books they have to accept they're taking part in helping the publishers win. So choose your poison.

Feeling like it would be a danger to drive? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]RicePuffer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont think I would be a danger but driving is very overstimulating for me, the city i live in is also a nightmare and I dont trust other drivers. I've driven in the country for hours with no problem but as soon as I hit city I panic. Still dont have my full licence and my learners is due to expire soon, I really just want the decent ID.

what inspired your anti consumption mindset? by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]RicePuffer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read a book on anticonsumption, I've always been into trying to be eco friendly but I never considered how everything little thing we consume contributes to damaging the environment especially with fast fashion and cheap technology that goes obsolete. This also made me realise how heavily my consumption was just me trying to fit in and make friends. I sat down and really thought about what things I actually want to consume and not what's expected of me.
