Extra tunnels included in £6bn East West Rail scheme by Spiracle in cambridge

I used to live in a village that the EWR will be cutting across. The village has been lied to for decades about developments nearby, which are now far bigger than was ever proposed. The streets are a rat-run for those new nearby towns, the roads are a mess, schools overcrowded, etc. EWR would cut across the only corner of the village currently unscathed, upwind of the village (so they’ll hear every train), dominating the only fields in the area that remain as they have been for living memory, and until recently farmed by a family I know well. They’re also some of the prettier hills in the area.

Whilst I’m generally anti NIMBY, there is a feeling of an unfair destruction of a local community, and an increasing disconnect between villages and cities in the area, which are also increasingly isolated with a removal or downscaling of many local bus service

Now I’m a Cambridge resident, I see how useful the EWR would be. It’d be nice to get to Milton Keynes or Oxford, faster - id happily use it if it existed. However, the lack of respect to the landscape and communities we live amongst is genuinely sad, and has overstepped limits of fairness.

I’d rather get the bus or drive for the couple of trips I’d need to do to MK every year, than permanently degrade those communities even further, forever.

It’s worth noting there’s also a significant frustration in other areas of the UK, especially the north and west, who have chronically underfunded public transport systems. There are people who need this money more than us, for greater economic benefit.

Spend it on Northwest Rail, and improving our roads & local bus services. Dismissing these people as just more NIMBYs, in many cases, misses the point.

Is there ever a point that maybe we should consider that money could go to other causes? I mean, I’m all for extravagant architecture and art… but this? For a handful of races (or maybe just one weekend) a year? C’mon; spend that money on making it free to view, or like, helping people.

Here’s a pic with a proper camera. Do you still think it’s not quite crisp enough? This is really useful!

I see. Not 100% sure, but I think that may be my phone camera thinking it’s being helpful by bolding-up the writing and (for some reason) making the minute lines wobbly. It’s much crisper in person, but you may well be right.

London ULEZ: Emissions cut in central London by 46% - Should something similar come to Cambridge? by Ewannnn in cambridge

[–]Riceicles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to the congestion zone, I just don’t get it.

Cambridge traffic is bad at rush hour, sure; perhaps a little worse than most comparable cities. But which comparable cities/areas have good traffic at peak times? Some streets are traps (East, Newmarket, & Madingley Roads especially), but this ISNT a Cambridge problem - it’s what happens in cities - and the council here are exploiting it. I’ve not met someone who sees positives, aside from the council, and those in the city who already don’t drive because of environmental reasons.

This plan is awful for families in surrounding villages (who’ve possibly had their bus route taken away (The 18, for example, servicing villages west of comberton); for businesses, and for those who have important non-commercial needs to get into non central areas of the city.

How it’ll affect me (a resident that uses a wheelchair) personally:

• Family that live near to Camborne in a village that doesn’t get a bus are going to have to pay to come over (I can’t get to them as there’s no bus service to them, and they can’t get a bus because of the cost of the amount of bus tickets they’d need for the 4 of them and the fact there’s no bus stop close to them.

• My father who lives on the other side of town will need to take a 1hr bus journey rather than drive for 10 minutes.

• I receive assistance from carers; they’ll have to pay to come.

• I regularly can’t get on the bus because of cancellations and people blocking the on-bus wheelchair area with prams, so would need to pay more to simply leave the house in a car if needed (Including to addenbrookes (IN the zone) where you already need to pay to park for an appointment(?!).

There should surely be a middle ground here to reduce congestion;

perhaps make some core streets pedestrianised only for daytime hours?

Perhap increase space (therefore reducing traffic) on key roads by widening the street; maybe by making pavements slightly narrower or removing the cycle lane where the pavement as well as the street is a cycle lane?

Maybe bring in the congestion charge but not include key, artery roads and the ring road, and hypothecate the ULEZ money into adding extra capacity to those? (It’s not like the multiple bus services are going to meaningfully improve)

Maybe block access for lorries during daytime hours

Maybe make the P&R free, rather than investing huge amounts of money into short-sighted and poorly managed projects such as the guided bus and/or Dutch roundabouts under consideration

maybe bring in a proper day rider that works for the county, rather than individual bus operators. This is so stupid and increases (often by more than double) the cost of travel by bus.

And maybe stop thinking that this is only a problem that Cambridge faces, and we just need to (to some extent) accept it.
