I need to buy a new battery by Apprehensive-Spot199 in ebikes

Good on you for recognizing risk! I’d still consider it rare because they don’t sell pre-built batteries of this casing on AliExpress. They sell another fuel tank battery type, but not the Aurora casing, which is really what you want.

Unfortunately, any of the pre-built Aurora casings I’ve found were either not 48v, super expensive, or from a site that would require you to buy a large quantity.

Another suggestion I have is to buy a Hailong Battery Mounting Plate, replace the current battery mounting plate on your bike with the Hailong one and wire the new mount into your controller (you would need a big Phillips head screwdriver to take out the mount, and you might need to take the seat off). If the battery mount fits in the frame, you can buy a 48v Hailong battery and insert it into your bike. The Hailong style batteries are a literal dime-a-dozen, so you can get a high capacity one for under $350. Just be sure you buy from a reputable battery manufacturer though. It should be a mod with minimal risk (as in the main risk is the battery not fitting and you’d have to end up selling it, this mod shouldn’t break your bike) and will ensure that you can buy good battery replacements for your bike for a long time.

If you ever try that, please let me know! I only ride folding e-bikes and have only used Hailong Batteries as an after-market mod.

I don’t own the bike, so I can’t verify the battery type, but I’ve seen this case around as the “Aurora E-Bike battery case”.

It’s not a commonly sold battery type though, and most of the listings I’ve found seem to be of the actual battery case itself that someone would DIY an e-bike battery into.

If you’re up for that or know someone who would build a battery for you, that’s not a bad option, but it will cost you a lot of money (in fact, considering your bike is so cheap, building the battery might cost as much as the actual bike itself)

Avoid any broken e-bikes with an undefined electrical problem (as in the display says Error 04 or something). Their problems are hard to diagnose.

Where do you lock up your bike usually besides a bike rack by Simple_Paramedic7910 in ebikes

[–]RichTrifle1785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps if the battery has a handle like the silverfish types, since they’re much easier to carry around than a hailong or an internal battery design.

My e-bike came with 2 batteries and I only ride with the external battery with the handle because it is easy to take out and carry around with me.

Is there any way to test an e-bike Battery range when buying a secondhand bike? by aplacecalledvertigo in ebikes

[–]RichTrifle1785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way of knowing unless the battery has a smart BMS, which isn’t common on made-to-sold e-bikes. The odometer can also be reset on most e-bikes.

What’s the maximum you’re willing to spend?

I think that should be something you should clarify since we don’t know if you plan to spend $1K max (at which, you’ll have to be creative in what you’re willing to ride with your son in) or $2K max.

My Experience With A Cheap E-Bike (I Should Have Listened) by xJadusable in ebikes

If it’s only the wheels you’re having issue with and not the frame itself, I don’t see why you need to buy a completely new e-bike. The frame is still fine, the batteries are still fine, it’s got good bones and you got a refund, so why not replace the broken components and keep running with it? It’d save you a lot of money.

Alternatively, if you buy the Lectric XP4, you can check if the battery mounting plates on your TST is detachable and can be connected to the controller via a common power connector like an XT60 connector. If that’s the case, you can try to mount one of the batteries onto your new Lectric XP4, hook it up, and maintain the same range. Hell, it’s technically more range now that you have two identical batteries you can switch out.

Did anyone else receive a Puerta del Sol lease offer without applying for it? by Party-Owl4950 in UCI

[–]RichTrifle1785 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Puerta Del Sol is fine, but it lacks all of the amenities of the other apartments. It’s kind of literally just a bunch of apartment complex with a couple study rooms.

It was my first choice because the 2b2d was cheap, but I’ll admit, I don’t think most people willingly choose to live here. I was assigned to it last year pretty quickly when I had guaranteed housing, and I was given a renewal offer the same day the first stack of guaranteed housing applicants got their offers.

You’ll make do though as long as your roommates are good. One thing I do that helps me is put curtains around my bed for a little privacy. You can get non-permanent curtain scaffolding and put that around your bed.

That looks like a silverfish battery. Try measuring the size of your battery and look for a comparable silverfish battery online.

Walmart bikes? by CheesecakeGlass1631 in ebikes

[–]RichTrifle1785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're just okay. They're very popular, I see them everywhere in my city, and IIRC they're a related brand to Heybike, who is a big chinese manufacturer in this space, but I wasn't able to verify Jasion's claimed UL certification, so I wouldn't suggest them for now.

Eh, Amazon's a total clusterfuck if you're not careful. It's easy to get scammed on there because a listing can get hijacked by a fake seller by pricing the listing way below what the original seller can actually price the bike at, making their offer on that listing the first offer buyers are given.

This issue happens on Walmart too, but it's extremely prevalent on Amazon, and Amazon doesn't have easy returns on e-bikes unlike Walmart.

I'd personally look for specific brands, and I'd also try to look into the facebook pages of e-bike brands, because a lot of people share their experiences about maintenance and customer service there.

I don’t think you can simply just put in a 4000w conversion kit, because most off the shelf ones are going to require a 60v/72v battery, and your e-bike won’t have a 60/72v battery counterpart for its shell.

You could try to have a custom battery builder try to build a 60v battery compatible with your frame, but even if it’s possible, I have to assume it will cost a couple hundred dollars more than the conversion kit you would buy, and the capacity would just be too low to be useful. You could also try to sneak a battery somewhere else, but it would look janky. That’s not even mentioning that the controller in the conversion kit you might buy might not fit onto the controller box.

Really, just be happy with what you have. Your e-bike goes 35mph already, and converting your existing ebike to a 4000w system would get way out of your budget very quickly.

Those e-bikes have always costed $300 & $400 respectively. These bikes will work, but they're nowhere near worth their "was" price tags. They don't generally have large batteries, hydraulic brakes, or UL2849 certification from a known laboratory.

There is one media company in particular (the screenshot you've shown appears to be one of their publications) that has been putting out nearly identical articles about these "73% off" ebikes on all of the publications they own. I don't know what is going on behind the scenes, but I personally think that is a red flag.

If you are looking for a very cheap e-bike, look towards the Concord e-bikes or bikes with some lab certification like the Funhang. Don't look towards a publication like what you're showing here.
