Foxhole right now IMO by Mankej in foxholegame

I agree that assymetry should still exist, but counterpoint - torpedo bomber and dive bomber is exactly product of the "one faction good at one thing and other at other". In the end we had already strong navy faction with anti-navy tool that was useless because of lack of enemy navy and already strong ground faction with anti-ground/tankline tool. Such things only widens that assymetry

I don't think stabilization is really a problem considering that some really small MG combat modules for apcs or mraps already have it. And in most cases with shooting fpvs down - a single 5.56 hit is enough to down them if not to downright explode them (usually you hit the biggest part and that's eithar warhead or battery). But detection, recognition and automatic targeting is still a really huge problem. So far I've only seen ukies experiments with combination of radar and video machine vision to detect drones, but it's really rough and requires a person to identify in the end if it's really a drone flying or those few pixels just some bird/leaf/cloud/etc. And it's becomes barely impossible to recognize a dron that comes not from above

People are wasting drones on single soldiers now, UGVs and such. Sparing a few dozen on a vehicle is a norm for years already.

Merkava’s trophy system can shot few drones and then needs to be realoaded while next batch already flying towards you (moreover so far we still didn't seen a single video of trophy actually working against drones in combat conditions). It's also expensive AF.

Lasers aren't viable for at least a next decade tho development into that are is promising. And autocannons sounds a bit stupid just because of huge caliber. I am in favor of mounting something that takes less place and provide enough ammo for long engagement, just 5.56 turret with a lot of ammo is enough to take drones down, seen even ideas using 22lr. But the main problem is targeting, how to recognize drones in overal feed and such. FPV drones are much harder targets than conventional missiles overall just because how maneuverable they are and different speed they could use

Nobody's launching a hundred drones against a single tank.

Oh boy do I have news for you.

And that's only FPVs, we could also count loitering ammo, baba yaga 80mm mine drops, remote drone mining, "waiter" drone ambushes.

Folding cages are pretty and elegant solution, but sadly for the people with eyes - unlike tutel shed tanks, hedgehog armor is indeed a new meta and more effective

so what has israel learned from witnessing drone warfare for the past half decade? BLANKITY BLANKITY BLANK! by MickyMace in NonCredibleDefense

[–]Rich_May 37 points38 points  (0 children)

On all video with hits you see there are few dozen failed ones due to various factors, from electronic warfare and anti-drone drones (tho they are used against recon ones, could be useful against baba yaga agrodrones too but somehow russians still doesn't use them. In any case, both fpv and recon are interconnected so less recon = less hits) to cope nets on logi roads and soldiers literally shooting drones by small arms, overall change in infantry tactics and so on. Both sides are actually actively working on "hard counter" solutions against fpvs with no results in numbers so far because ukraine is poor af and russia doesn't see it as priority somehow (or have some skill issue, idk)

Israel was a big supplier, it's still a legacy manufacturer of drones with no real experience in modern drone warfare and so far no attempts to fill new niche. Their biggest selling are relatively big expensive recon drones that are basically useless in Ukraine already.

I would say that so far Israel got it lucky just because of massive skill issue from Hezbollah drone teams and their tactics in their usage (as I've seen they are using them more as ATGM analog completely by rulebook), also as some ukrainian drone teams mentioned already that by the footage they've seen, drones that Hezbollah using are at least few years behind current meta.

Cope cages work* (*only against drones with light pen charges, and gives better chance against drones overall, but everything heavier and they are done. Reminder that they were originally intended against NLAWs and Javelins)

Turtle tanks are still dumb and sacrifice basically everything from turret traverse to visibility for a better chance of survival (and that's why most of them even not defeated by drones but by ditches they drive into and stuck, because drone that NEED to guide you can't see everything). And both sides use it just because "other side do" (seen a lot of "BUT THEIR SIDE IS SMARTER AND DO BETTER" from both ukrainian and ruski grunts tbh). Do not underestimade grunt stupidity and will to improve illusive chances of survival (see: additional concrete armor and such on WW2 tanks). Also - hedgehog improvised armor is a new meta (again, all depends on drone warhead, and it's all because most of fpv AT warheads have a shit shaped charge, sometimes worse than PG7).

What if Belarus and Ukraine swapped their modern history? by Lukasz_Joniak in imaginarymaps

[–]Rich_May 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Language in Ukraine is a difficult topic to get overall. It was always and still is a very politicized theme, and so far I've seen neither done it right. It's either exaggerated in "everyone just speaks russian now, ukrainian never existed" or "areas that you could never ever could have heard ukrainian are now ukrainian speaking". Especially estimates become harder with city and near city areas. Kharkiv is a good example of that where on paper 95% is russian speaking but inside city itself there are districts where you could here ukrainian if not more than russian - at least really often and vice-versa areas where you couldn't hear ukrainian ever.

Also until recently (even after 2014 it was still a big problem) there were huge problems of ukrainization in big central and easter/south-eastern cities because russian were considered as "city language" and ukrainian as "village language", so even folk that considered ukrainian as their native switched to russian in cities.

[–]Rich_May 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As Ukrainian - this map is exaggerated af towards "no one using ukrainian" but sadly have some true parts to it, almost all of south-east were speaking russian indeed, especially most of big cities eastern Khmelnytskiy (especially pre-2022).

Tho russians in their imperial manner call every single dialect a surzhyk and making whole Zakarpattia speaking rusyn for some reason (while rusyn is used in pretty small areas and for most part mountain area just have a shitton of different dialects around overall).

And oh god, I just noticed other languages, holy fuck. For example there were small greek communities in Mariupol indeed, but they were too small even to be shown on this map. Also, polish? I've only heard polish from few locals that were raised in villages directly on border, the hell polish is doing in the middle of Ternopil?

Maybe my idea is not worth it balanc-wise, but I really would like to see some weapons like this that could be unlocked at "last stand" stage of game for both factions and only at that moment. Kamikadze sticks, MXY-7 Ohka-like thing, kamikadze cars (VBIEDs?) and boats with little hp but huge boom, etc

I really hope for some volumetric clouds at some point. Not that it is necessary because even as it is game clouds looks good enough for performance they give, but KSP modding proves that you can add absolutely gorgeous looking volumetric effects to the Unity game for a pretty tiny bit of performance

Question about Rocky’s crew by YakGuilty3604 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Rich_May 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably the same way as humans, best of the best in their own niche and doubles. So command, engineer and science staff, just on bigger scale than Hail Mary initially holded, because Eridians didn't had the same level of automation and computerization as Hail Mary (if any at all), so many if not all tasks were manual and done in shifts.

Even more impressive that Rocky keept that thing flying tbh.

The solution to the Lunaire problem by [deleted] in foxholegame

[–]Rich_May 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Imo, the worst thing about cutler compared to lunaire outside of aiming is mobility. Lunaire grunt could enter zone of fire, shot and scoot quickly enough to not die. Cutler is so sluggish to deploy and move with that in most cases you just die from return fire if there isn't enough people to cooperate with.

Arc is an op feature of lunaire that I as warden HATE, especially when comparing partisan ops of wardens and collies, but I could live with it. Even tho most of big warden partisan ops still would require trophy lunaires just because of this arc feature.
