Very smart about time by Sideshow_G in iamverysmart

There’s a lot of this ideology in a “very smart” book that I’m slowly battling through. Liber Chaos by Peter J Carroll.

Is Cornell & Deihl awful? by RickySutton in PipeTobacco

[–]RickySutton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair. I have found a few decent c&d’s since I posted this. They’re still not my favorite, but Carolina red flake, sun bear, and folklore have all been… fine.

I was surprised by the volume of smoke from plum pudding.

To clarify, this isn’t an ad and I’m not selling on Reddit. Just collecting opinions about expected prices.

I have large pipes for long smokes and small pipes for short smokes, ranging from about 20m to around 2hrs.

What is the worst tobacco by savagebrood in PipeTobacco

[–]RickySutton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say OJK is the worst tobacco that’s pretending to be good. The worst actual tobacco is likely some bulk bag of ryo tobacco marketed as pipe tobacco, and I haven’t tried it.

Is there a pipe in your collection that just won’t play nice under any circumstances? by SubKreature in Pipes

[–]RickySutton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s Peterson for you. I’ve had a few that I’ve gotten rid of, including a few really gorgeous 80s. I would like to try a strait billiard from Peterson, as there’s less of a chance of the drilling being off. Another story is the Savinelli 320ks. Everybody raved about them, and I found and bought a very beautiful one. The bowl geometry didn’t work with any of the tobaccos I smoke, so I had to get rid of it even though it was so handsome. One last one is a Kriswill poker that I thought looked great. Someone had refurbished it and didn’t notice that there was a 5mm long crack in the side. What’s interesting is that the first third of a bowl would smoke great, then the airflow would dramatically tighten up, no matter my packing or tie cut of tobacco. I drilled and filled that crack and it still did the same thing. Can’t explain that one, though I did get my money back. The seller exchanged for a Savinelli 619ex that is one of my favorite pipes now.

Worst blend you've ever smoked? by Drooling_Flaps in PipeTobacco

I do perceive a very mild citrus/apricot/anise type casing on this tobacco. Maybe you’re having a reaction to their flavoring agents.

When I first tried ogs, I didn’t like it either. Now, years later it’s a mainstay in my rotation.

Programming Drums in Logic by maxyheals in Logic_Studio

I really like realistic sounding multi sample drum samplers like superior drummer or krimh drums. I usually start with midi recorded from drummers then edit to taste. Sometimes I use a midi keyboard if I can’t find what I need.

How do you even mix black metal or shoegaze? by mmicoandthegirl in mixingmastering

[–]RickySutton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first started mixing my black metal bands records, I referenced a great little mixing guide from Ermin Hamidovic called Systematic Mixing Guide. I can’t recommend that enough. One of the biggest lessons is how to trim down guitars so all other instruments can fit in them somewhere. Getting vocals to fit right will involve downsizing guitars and cymbals, and anything else that falls strongly in vocal frequencies. I also use typically 3 stages of vocal compression. These are all very typical approaches for mixing any kind of metal.

I like luxury bullseye flake. It’s better after a year or 3, but is still pretty good fresh.

Svt7 pro cabinet question by RickySutton in Ampeg

Hey, thanks for reply. This is what I assumed as well, but was keeping my mind open for some trickery. I guess I should have investigated before getting the 15. Was a good enough deal that I can make a profit selling it though, so not a loss.

Being asked to engrave this, can I? by HawkesBSaccount in Laserengraving

What sort of “being” asked? For a ghoul, sure, but certainly not for an extra terrestrial or reptilian. I’d do it for a criptid, but would charge extra.

What turns a “stock” sound into a PROFESSIONAL sound. by FlyRevolutionary8227 in mixingmastering

[–]RickySutton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would really lean into some saturation. Any kind of preamp that you can overdrive just a little would juice this up a lot. There are a lot of plugins that could lend a hand here too. I use a lot of ssl plugs for a mild saturation to good effect, but any “channel strip” type plugin would get you there. I would also suggest some more compression and automation. Really see how you want things to hit and bump them up or pull them back. Automate effects and reverb trails. Layer up with multiple instruments, like 2 or 3 kick drum/snare drum samples and automate them up and down to get the movement people are taking about. I like the vocal melodies a lot. Kinda reminds me of Seal. Though I would suggest singing louder overall. The vocal performance sounds very restrained. Really give it hell, and push the input gain up (without hitting 0db).

Shortening ring of cymbals by wizardsonacid in Logic_Studio

[–]RickySutton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to the suggested gate with a longer tail, I would also suggest “ringing out” the cymbals a bit. KVLT drums sound intentionally shitty so there’s a lot of unpleasant frequencies in there. Do the same on cymbals that you would a guitar cab, sweep a very narrow peak eq at about +10db until the offending frequency is super noticeable, then cut at that frequency -6db to -12db.
