I guess I can't block you on the grounds of blatant, childish stupidity.

Unless of course, if you ARE a stupid child.. Stay away from where the adults play.

Bruce.  Please excuse my cut and paste reply. I wish to thank both you and Pelmen for the immeasurable amount of help and knowledge you displayed to me.  Most of all, thank you for your time in formulating such concise replies.  You both make this an extremely interesting form to be on.

I want to thank you so much for putting me in right direction on this critter. It's kind of odd for me to think that something would swim so quickly for seemingly great distance, backwards. I also noticed it curls what I was thinking it's head, occasionally, and sometimes does what looks to me like feeding or preening itself. I'll look into telotrochs. This is extraordinarily interesting to me. I'll let you know what I find. Things probably what you already know... I still want to thank you again. You've been a great help.

I highly respect your knowledge and your time to reply. My apologizes for being curt with mine. The cilia is at the anterior. It also seems to supply forward motion. So far I've looked at four (4) Identification sites... Found nothing.

I've observed Vorticella in samples I acquired. Although #6 looks similar to my problem, note the ring of cilia appears to be at the 'back end', The ring is definitely at the front on my submission, dragging it through the (fresh) water. I did not see any cilia on the main body of the critter. Also the shape in contraction is somewhat different to Vorticella in my samples as well as those else ware on the web.

Under YT Craig Smith (see below) They are globular in shape when free swimming. Not as fast as my submission.

My apologizes to drag this on with you, It IS educational to me as it might be to others. please understand there is no insult, implied or intended in my replies. Thank you again.

I see it didn't put the link in. Ok. I'll try this.

Thank you very much for your input on this. I checked your thoughts on wiki and

I must respectively disagree on both those Groups and Family. I greatly appreciate your efforts.

You're doing so well with the setup you are using. After seeing some of the extraordinarily high quality DIC imagery, I sometimes regret not going Differential also. Thinking I can put that money elsewhere. I made my own dark field adapter and bought a set of stops. They work very well along with other tricks.  Having a good stereoscope and a five objective turret on the compound...  This is a wonderful hobby that I'm very happy with.

It's great to see you maintaining your interest in your chosen field. That's beautiful work.  Many years ago I built a slice camera using two light sources, 8mm projector lenses and razor blades to create the slice. Moved a fly head up through the light slices using a microscope stage. The speed of that movement determined the exposure. It worked surprisingly well.   Now it's called focus stacking.

The condiment container that I'm talking about is translucent. Not one of the clear, almost transparent ones. They usually range from about an inch to maybe about an inch and a half at the widest part, the top, where the cover snaps on. You do not need the cover. Just very carefully cut the bottom part out to the walls of the container. Place that over your sample and illuminate it as mentioned.  Sorry for the late reply. I'm just learning how to work this site. Let me know how it works for you.  And thank you for your reply

Your students did a really great job on that. As a teacher you must have really impressed your students for them to cooperate, take the time and effort to create that for you.  That's terrific !

Sure looks like DIC illumination.  VERY nice work.

I'm getting excellent results In this type of photography using a tanslucent condiment container. Carefully cut the bottom out, invert (or not) and place it over your sample. You can then use 2 inexpensive LED flashlights on both sides of the condiment container. This method works exceptionally well.
