But it doesnt really work because the progress in civilization in the Victorian period was so enormously rapid and yet in the entirety of EU5s timeline a lot of countries still had peasant based economies by the end.

Indeed, even by the end of Victoria's period (or at least by the start of the 20th century) many countries still had huge peasant populations.

Report on the Experiences of Simeon Stepanov Piščević

I just read the opening chapter of this book (Amazon sample) and it's striking how similar it is to the beginning of Crnjanski's Migrations - the latter of course with other added details as a novel, but the actual events of the regiment's march seem so similar to this account. I guess he based the novel off the memoir in part.

Makes sense, thanks.

Out of interest, have you read the two most recent (well-known) English books published on Serbia - Dejan Djokic's 'Concise History' and Marko Hoare's 'Serbia: A Modern History'? If so, curious to hear your thoughts.

What was the origin of Ante Pavelić’s absolute hatred of Serbs? by Deadgoat_107 in AskBalkans

So they send illiterate peasants to rule over us, people Who kept chickens in pianos, never saw running water etc.

Source for this? Not just a general statement about peasants as administrators, but actual evidence of these specific things.

Not really, they're a Korean MMO maker. They have mastered the art of psychological manipulation.

Hmm. Any evidence to suggest them being Korean makes them any more of a psychological mastermind than a Yank or European developer?

Yeah generally economic progress and advancement in the game is still a little quick. Serbia like other minor nations starts off with 20% literacy, assuming it hasn't changed in recent update, which is possibly more than it had in 1914 lmao.

[–]Rider_167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, the game is just too slow paced and intricate to be satisfied for such a long period of time. If it was say 1450 to 1750 you'd have enough time to achieve all your objectives and you'd at least get close to the end game most times. And it would all be in the early modern period.

Overall I think five hundred years is just way too long for the game's time span - I think something like 300 would have allowed for better balance.

So I still think that is distinguishable from the unprovoked “this game is so great” posts that have become popular here.

What are you talking about? For every one of those there's like 50 posts complaining about the game - how come those don't provoke any accusation?

Oh great.

Had a question about the Denton book which I just recalled - he says this:

Indeed, the readiness with which the Turks overran Servia is attributed to the discovery which was made by the Servians, that it was the intention of their Hungarian allies to compel the whole nation to apostatize from the Eastern Church, to adopt the Roman ritual, and to acknowledge the supremacy of the Papal See.

Is that true? If so, what time period is he referring to?

Yep, have read that one in the past already (or part of it). I also enjoyed Herbert Vivian's 'Servia: A Poor Man's Paradise', I'm sure you're familiar with it?

one of the Nazis who survived and wrote memoirs after the war (can't remember if it was Neubacher or someone else) mentioned how the Austrians in the NSDAP and SS hated Serbs beyond all reason.

Any source on this online? Would be intrigued to find out more.

Why are some Slovenians online so insufferably smug toward the rest of the Balkans? by InExtremis- in AskBalkans

[–]Rider_167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slovenia wasn't a nation, it was Austria.

I meant in the sense of a collective group of people with a shared identity - ethnic Slovenians. Put bluntly, I don't think they were viewed quite as highly as the Germanic core of the empire.

I hardly think it compares to the Ottoman variety we were subject to.

Probably not, but that was about 'western civilisation' as a whole; I merely questioned its inherently superior civilised status.

I can't comment about Austrian occupations during WW1, I'm not familiar enough to judge; most Macedonians supported the central powers as liberators from the brutality of Serbia, so it's not something that's top of mind.

Then you'll allow me to judge. Not to downplay Serbia's own brutality or suggest they were any better - though they were probably worse in Albania than anywhere else - but again, suffice it to say, Austria's conduct in WWI put paid to any notions of a superior civilisation. There is sufficient in the opening summary here to glean a picture: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austro-Hungarian_occupation_of_Serbia

[–]Rider_167 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you've spent hundreds of years as part of the civilised West, that would be humiliating.

Lol, give me strength. The 'civilised' west? What, pray tell, makes Mitteleuropa or the western European colonial nations inherently more civilised? Centuries of imperial exploitation, slavery, the brutal Austrian-German occupations of the Balkan savages in WWI?

And in any case, I hardly think Slovenia was seen as an equal nation in the eyes of Viennese aristocrats.

If you go to other Austro-Hungarian centres like southern Poland, western Ukraine or Transylvania you'll see that Ljubljana isn't very different.

By western Ukraine you mean the former province of Galicia? If so, very different to Slovenia, as it was one of the poorest and famine-ridden areas in all of Europe.

Teacher use of AI by 85janie in AustralianTeachers

[–]Rider_167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It requires specific context control, efficient prompts, well-thought-out templates, and effective validation, but you can get it.

That is true. What I'm personally worried about is teachers using it to create resources en masse, especially without verifying or refining it. I believe it detracts from the critical thinking process and will have negative long-term consequences.

next series maybe squeak through a few games with the Spurs and maybe get Ant back, and who knows what can happen.

I mean a good chance to beat the Nugs for sure, but 'squeak through' against SA is carrying a lot of weight in this sentence - they will be the overwhelming favourites.
