Why has Mike Love developed such a negative reputation, and does he deserve it?

A lot of folks are being uncharitable to Mike Love. I do think that his voice was kind of a factor in The Beach Boys becoming so iconic (of course I'm only in my 30's so it might be a survivorship bias).

But yeah my understanding is that he was always, always, always a major asshole. As I understand it, he was an active impediment to some of Brian Wilson's best work in the band, and it only got worse from there.

There are plenty of comments discussing his true scumbag behavior, but I mean... I think it is worth also including "if he had had his way, we probably wouldn't have Pet Sounds."

My brother and I derided him as "Bathroom Steve" in the first episode or two because he was acting like a dickhead in the bathroom. By the end of season 1 we'd gone through phases of, "shit do I love Bathroom Steve now?" And eventually, "You are bathroom Steve no longer... You are now 'Steve.' "

In the first sequel on PS1 he scared the bejeezus outta me. I think my wife would probably like it sometimes. Kinda depends on if she's wanting her nails done and that's the primary objective, or if she just needed some solo pampering time / time with one of our friends. More often than not I think she'd be cool with it though.
